Wstrząsające wspomnienia Chinki, która w latach osiemdziesiątych pracowała jako prokurator. Mając 18 lat, została wybrana spośród tysięcy kandydatów, by przejść przyspieszone szkolenie przygotowujące do zawodu. Wkrótce potem musiała wydawać surowe wyroki i uczestniczyć w publicznych egzekucjach. Wątpliwości i wyrzuty sumienia nie pozwalały dziewczynie cieszyć się z przywilejów związanych z wykonywanym zawodem. Małżeństwo z oportunistycznym sędzią nie przetrwało zbyt długo. Zakazany romans z cudzoziemcem zaowocował niechcianą ciążą, którą trzeba było usunąć, gdy ukochany zginął w wypadku. Korzystając ze znajomości w policji, Xiao załatwiła sobie paszport i w 1998 roku wyjechała do Szwecji. W swojej książce demaskuje rażąco niski poziom systemu prawnego w Chinach, a także wręcz kryminalne oblicze tego kraju. Pokazuje wszechobecną korupcję, łamanie praw jednostki, nieprzestrzeganie przepisów.

Har sällan läst en så krass självbiografi. Intressant beskrivning av det kinesiska samhället och rättsväsendet. Man blir inte direkt sugen på att resa till Kina.

I don't really know what to say about this book. It's very difficult, because it's so complex. On one side, the book is easy; the main character, Xiao, fights for justice. On the other hand, she lives in a world so different from us, corrupted and harsh. There's no room for negotiation. I think I liked this book, even though some parts were awful. Not because of the book itself, oh no, but because of the events, they made me feel really bad. I'm glad the main character remained her steady self, aware of what happens in this world and how she still wants justice in the end. I think she did well, even though she was different from her colleagues.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in laws and other cultures. If you can't handle with awful stories, I wouldn't read this, if I were you. On the other side, today we are living in a world exposed to all those gruesome facts, so I think most people would say this isn't so bad.
I think it was. No one should ever say 'it is not bad' about horrible things happening to others. You never should.
A book you will never forget. It will continue living inside your memory and it will change your vision. At least it did for me.
