Henry just wants his garage back. Well, he wants his wife back, too. He lost both six months ago when Claire helped an injured deer on the side of the road. In went the deer and out went the BMW. Their marriage went on hold to save what some would consider a damn good meal. But the day has come to return everything back to normal. The deer is healthy and Henry and Claire spend a quiet spring morning releasing it in the woods. Serenity soon turns to terror as they realize they are lost in the labyrinth of the forest with no food and hardly any water. Food and water are the least of their worries. In these woods a long forgotten god is worshiped. Its followers believe in sacrifice, and Henry and Claire have stumbled into their dark world.
Erik Williams is a former naval officer and current defense contractor (but he's not allowed to talk about it). He is also the author of Demon and numerous small press works and short stories. He currently lives in San Diego with his wife and three daughters. When he's not at his day job, he can usually be found changing diapers or coveting carbohydrates.
"Demon is like a hellacious cross between 24, The Exorcist and a video game. Fast-paced and wicked fun." (Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author)
"Set amid the turmoil and terror of the present war, a much more ancient battle--the ultimate battle of GOOD versus EVIL - is resurrected...and God help us all." (P.D. Cacek, author of The Wind Caller)
"Demon is a swiftly-paced novel that kicks ass all over the place." (Ray Garton, author of Serpent Girl)
"Some books are like grenades with the pin pulled. ... That's how I feel when I crack covers on an Erik Williams book. Handle this one with care... and watch out for flying shrapnel." (Norman Partridge, author of Dark Harvest)
“Erik Williams. Underline that name, put it on the fridge. Erik Williams is the genuine article.” (Gene O’Neill, author of RUSTING CHICKENS)
"When there's no more room in Hell, let the worst sinners burn in the mind of Erik Williams."(Cody Goodfellow, author of RADIANT DAWN and PERFECT UNION)
If I had not read Jack Ketchum's Off Season, and particularly Offspring, this book would have had a much larger impact on me. However, with Offspring already in print for a number of years, this feels like the Cliffs Notes version of that book. But Blood Spring is still a fast paced, suspenseful, and delightfully grisly read, but nothing I haven't experienced before. Regardless of those issues, it is well written and should be enjoyable for any horror fan, especially readers of Richard Laymon and Jack Ketchum.
Williams' economic prose is impressive, moving quickly from one scene to another, managing to never spend too much time on any one moment. The characters are instantly likable and you feel right at home in their world. Williams takes his time building the suspense and atmosphere and then throws you suddenly into the deep end. I look forward to more work by this new author and hope his next outing is a little more original in regards to the overall story concept. The price, also, was a bit steep for a paperback, especially one with such a short page count. I would still recommend this book, but if you have read Jack Ketchum's Offspring, there is not much new here to explore.
It is always nice to find a new author that one can enjoy and Erik Williams fits that bill. I went to look for his first novel and found that only 31 copies of "Demon" were printed of the hardcover.
"Blood Spring" is a bit reminiscent of a Richard Laymon type of story in as much as a young couple enter a menacing woods only to be captured by some no-good-nicks or should I say no-good-hicks.
The book was an easy compulsive read and sports a great cover panted by Jill Bauman.
Bad Moon Books does it again in finding great authors.
