I loved the Replicas album, & Are Friends Electric? single, when they came out but I only made it to page 200 of this autobiography. Numan's prose is uninspiring & he brags too much about all the groupies he bedded while whinging too much about his bad luck staying in the charts when all he was trying to do was please his fans. But, once he got into his real passion (to say the least) for flying small planes, I started checking out. If that's your thing then this might well be the book for you.
I read this a couple of years ago. As I was a teenager way back at the start of Gary's career it brought back memories for me. I was a big fan of Gary and the first concert I ever went to was his! His music has evolved and changed somewhat since that time but seeing that he is still around and inspiring another generation made me want to read this book. I felt it was a very honest account of his life and career so far. It contained a lot more humour in it than I had expected, since Gary tends to give off a very serious and aloof persona at times. I really enjoyed remembering his past career and getting to know about his flying adventures and what he has done since. I remember the news headlines at the height of his fame but its good to hear things from Gary's perspective. I'm happy to know that he is still enjoying making his kind of music.
