I loved this book so much I had never read the books (only seen the movies) as is usually the case the book was better. You really get Anne's voice in the books.

This book is about a girl named Anne. She's an orphan who moves in with siblings named Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. Anne is described as a youthful redhead girl with freckles across her cheeks, and her long red hair is usually up in braids. Anne is a pretty positive person, and she's really, really, really, talkative. This book is about her life living under Marilla and Matthew's house. The story goes from when she was a young girl, up until she turns into a young adult.

I don't want to say that this book is for "just girls," because I'm sure that there are many guys who would like this book as well. However, I would like to say that this is a simple story with no violence. I guarantee that this book is one that everyone should read. I now understand why it's considered to be a classic. It has all the aspects of a great story. It's funny, sad, happy, scary, and you can't help but fall in love with Anne. She's a girl who will live in our hearts, from this generation, and to many more to come.

The ultimate nice book. This is a book that proves that stories aren't about events, they're about people and conflict. I love Anne, Marilla, Diana, and Matthew, and every time I re-read this book, I cry. But it's the good kind of crying.

Addition 5/2010: I listed to Barbara Caruso's reading of this book, and it was brilliant. Listening to it made me realize how this is almost as much Marilla's story as it is Anne's.

Anne of Green Gables may not be current but I enjoyed it just the same. It is a wholesomely brilliant book. I can't believe I only discovered it now. If you are depressed, this overly talkative and wildly imaginative orphan named Anne will wipe out all your depression away. You should not miss out on this classic.

Rereading this with my daughter… There aren’t words to describe experiencing any good book for the first time all over again through my kiddos fresh eyes. It’s seriously like introducing them to beloved family members whom I haven’t seen in forever.

Why did I read this as a kid? Does it correlate with my liking Gillian Welch's Orphan Child? Or more my appreciation of 1983 She-Ra?

First time I read the book: great, loved it.
Re-reading it now.. not so much. Here's why:

Marilla's thoughts: this odd girl has changed my life for the better and I love her dearly.
*fck no I ain't tellin' her shih*
Marilla's words: "Anne Shirley you are a wicked girl. All that you think is nonsense and all that you do is wicked and sinful. Fiddlesticks!"

Anne: "I know I am a truly bad, bad person and forever will be. I am trying my best but raising me will be an uphill battle.
Not now Diana, I'M talking."

I loved this book. I have to admit that the only reason I gave it a shot was due to the Netflix series "Anne with an E" this kind of book isn't normally my cup of tea.
This book was cute, funny and wholesome. It really gave me plenty room for "scope of imagination." I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

I have read Anne of Green Gables countless times and I continue enjoying the story. It has a special meaning for me as I visited PEI where the story takes place. Anne is a lovable character who I saw change from a young girl to a young woman. I have laughed at her antics and cried over the deaths and losses.

Another children's novel read many years ago. Highly recommended for beginning readers. Adults might find it interesting as an introduction to the maritime provinces of Canada.

I picked up a paperback copy at the library when I was in seventh grade because my mom suggested I should read new books instead of just re-reading the Betsy-Tacy series, Little House series and the Wizard of Oz series. I had a hard time getting into it and ended up misplacing the book. Fortunately the library did not issue fines back then, so when I found it several months later in one of my classes (while searching the shelf for a silent reading book) I was able to continue and was hooked. I finished and read the rest of the series to "Anne of Ingleside" annually. Later I discoved the last two books in the series. I always feel like the sky is bluer and the trees are greener when I've been reading an "Anne" book.

Anne is charming and adorable and oh so frustrating. Her imagination entices us and her innocent nature makes us laugh. She is Oliver Twist, the orphan who finally is given a home. She is the girl they couldn't send back. She is irresistible as she grows from a reckless dreamer to a mature woman. She is the adventure of our youth, the love we bear for our personal stories and legends, the times we dare ourselves to show them what we can do. She is not frozen in Green Gables, she is the expansiveness of the human spirit and mind, uncaged.

It took me forever to read this book! I loved it though. As someone who "suffers" from red hair myself, I just love Anne. The girl has a flair for the dramatic and a very active imagination. My grandma gave me the first three books of this series when I was about 9. She read them as a young girl and thought I'd enjoy them. Never read them until now (almost 20 years later), but it makes me feel close to her and miss her. I'm looking forward to reading the rest!

classic from my adolescent years. Not only did I read all the books in this series. I abosolutely fell in love with the miniseries and went around for days saying, "I'm sorry Anne" in my put-on Canadian accent. It was great. Seriously, this is a wonderful book that all coming of agers should read. It covers everyday life with everyday relationships and problems. It is wholesome; it is joyful; it is lovely. Highly recommended...but fare warning, you will fall in love with Gilbert

I love Anne. I hope all my little girls read this series. It's not easy to find wholesome, witty, ambitious, humorous, kind... role models. I can't help but feel close to Anne. I was given this series when I was 10. It was a series that belonged to my cousin Becky. She died when she was 13 of cancer.

It has been a long time since I revisited this childhood classic. At first I thought I should have left it in to nostalgia but as I read on, it gained momentum and I was shedding more than a tear at the end. Still can't read it without flashbacks to the tv series. Such a spirited character that I once envied but now would just want to slap

I loved this book as a child, and I still love it as a grownup. I loved her passion for life, her imagination, her desire for the beautiful, and her knack for messing up even when trying so hard to do things right. Reality was always intruding into her dreams - how true! When the movie was made, I loved it too! It was filmed so beautifully and the characters were spot on!

Though this is not a story that I grew up with, I absolutely love Anne of Green Gables. The movies are wonderful, but (as usual) can't share everything that the book contains.
This book makes me feel as though I've been taken away to Prince Edward Island. I love the characters and the writing style.
If you haven't read this book, I would highly recommend it. Two thumbs WAY up!

This was wonderful for anyone in love with maritime Canada or the northeast US in general. Anne is such a likable character and really grows up during the course of this book. At times I got irked by all of the religious messages, but it wasn't too in my face and I guess that it should be expected from that time period anyway.

This was the first chapter book that I read as I child, and this was the point where I got it. I understood why people read, and I haven't stopped since. I don't know how many times I've read these books (10? 20?) but they are among my absolute favorites.

This is a series I still like to read, year after year. Anne was my daydreaming companion, confidant and bosom buddy- I watched her grow up as I grew up myself. My favorites of the series (besides the classic first) are Anne of the Island and Rilla of Ingleside.

I have always loved the movie of Anne of Green Gables, it was enchanting to read about all the characters I feel like I knew so well already, its a book that is filled with humor, creativity and character that seems hard to find these days.
