Gemini Men #3

Unleashed

Rate this book
Danny Taggart is the biggest badass of all the Gemini Men. And there's only one thing a woman can do with a man this hot, hard, and ready for action. . ..

He's the oldest of the three Taggart brothers. And the boldest. Tall, dark and rippling with muscle, Danny Taggart takes no prisoners. But when his latest case puts him up close and personal with the woman who once left him raw and aching, he's shell-shocked. Caroline Medford is still hotter than hell. But she's also got her pretty grip on the truths that have shaped him into the soul-ravaged warrior he is today. Burned once, Danny's plan is to satisfy his craving for Caroline and walk away. Yet once he has her warm and willing beneath him, he can't get deep enough--or close enough. Not even when danger threatens to destroy everything he's ever fought for. Including the only woman he's ever loved. . .

Like so many romance readers, my first romance novel was by Kathleen Woodiwiss - The Flame and the Flower, to be exact. I was thirteen. I spent the next month working my way through her entire back list. Shortly thereafter I discovered Judith McNaught, Johanna Lindsey, Karen Robards, Catherine Coulter, Shirlee Busbee among others, and devoured their lavish historical epics full of overbearing alpha males and the women who brought them to their knees. I was hooked. My high school teachers marveled at my ability to read romance novels under the desk and still score straight A's. I started to imagine myself, living in a cabin in the mountains somewhere, writing romance novels.

It took me quite awhile to pursue my dream. After graduating from Stanford with a degree in English Literature, I worked in a variety of soul sucking admin jobs before I began my career in marketing. It wasn't exactly my dream job, but at least my writing appeared on several web sites and in many software marketing brochures. Unfortunately I wasn't able to fit the phrase "and her loins melted like hot wax" into any of them.

During my stint as the world's surliest receptionist, I took my first stab at writing. The result was a very melodramatic western historical which reads like a bad Elizabeth Lowell rip off. Its currently languishing on my hard drive, forever stuck on page 330.

Then in fall 2001 I had an incredible stroke of luck and got laid off from my marketing job. I decided it was time to stop saying I wanted to be a writer and to actually give it a serious go. Fortunately my husband, a socially well adjusted alpha male, is a very generous patron of the arts.

Four years later, I sold my first book and I'm pretty much living the dream of getting paid to write romance. I don't live in a cabin in the mountains, but I do live in a rural-ish town near San Francisco (hey, we have deer and bunnies in our yard, along with the occasional coyote) with my husband, sons, and two dogs who patiently listen to my dialogue and help me work out plot points. When I'm not writing sexy romance, I enjoy running, reading, yoga and watching Food Network and bad reality TV.

4 ½-5 stars – Romantic Suspense

I’m a big fan of Alden’s Gemini Men romantic suspense series about the alpha ex-military Taggart brothers, twins Ethan and Derek and eldest Danny, who run a private security firm specializing in sensitive, undercover work for very high-profile, elite clientele. Ethan in Caught is the easygoing playboy brother, Derek in Kept is the quiet, cold, serious, and hardhearted of the three, and then there’s broody, badass Danny in Unleashed. I didn’t enjoy this story quite as much as Kept because I found Danny’s cold demeanor and bitter, borderline cruel, attitude towards his former love, Caroline, a bit much to take at times. He was a real mean SOB, and even though he makes some amends in the end for acting like a total a**hole, I still wanted a bit more groveling. Even so, it’s another entertaining read in a terrific series with hot alpha heroes, intriguing plots, thrilling action, satisfying suspense, and steamy sex.

I loved this entire series, and I recommend to any romantic suspense fan. Ms. Alden writes lovable alphas, and in this case all of them are former military.
You have to read them in order:
1 - Caught, 2 - Kept, 3 - Unleashed.

I especially liked Danny's story, because I felt like I got to get inside his head and find out why he was such a jerk in most of the first two books. I think Caroline is a good match for him.

This is a former lovers reunited story.

Yet another good RS by Ms Alden, admittedly instead of breadcrumbs to work out who is the bad guy she leaves dirty great big chunks of bread so a bit predictable, but it was good to see it played out.....As this was the final book in the series I would have liked a more detailed epilogue.

This is my first book by this author and I was hooked right from the beginning. A romantic suspense thriller packed with emotions and a great story.

Danny Taggart, the Hero is an emotionally closed character after the disappearance of his mother Anne whom he thought had walked away from the family. Enter Caroline Medford, the heroine who was the love of Danny's life, until she walked away from what Danny had become.

Caroline life is in danger so she turns to Danny for help who initially refuses to help her. Events take a turn for the worse and Danny reluctantly decides to help Caroline. Slowly they unearth deadly secrets, which involve the disappearance of Anne and Caroline's dead husband.

As the story progresses so does Danny and Caroline's relationship which is both emotional and sexy to read. Caroline is a strong character and who does not shy away from facing the dark realities as the deadly secrets unfold. And she is no pushover in the relationship with Danny. These two characters were really made for one another.

This book is definitely recommended.

H/h were highschool sweethearts. H's mother disappears one day and his father (ex-military) spends the next 20 years looking for her. H is scarred by all of this - he believes his mother abandoned him, his dad and his brothers. H - a player in HS - loved the h. H wanted to live his life to please his father and joined the military special forces. h had a horrible background as well - alcoholic parents, care of her siblings, shouldering quite a bit of responsibility at a young age - she always felt she handled everything on her own with no help/support. While H in military/special forces, he would be gone for long periods of time and she would not hear from him. During one of his absences, h discovers she is pregnant, has a miscarriage, and waits until H comes home to tell him - H goes out drinking with his brothers to blow off steam instead of seeing the h immediately. h stressed and grieving, and realizes this would be her life - a continuation of handling all on her own - no one caring what she needs or wants and that H would never let her closer to him as he tends to shut down out feeling for others.

This is a second chance - romantic suspense story. The book begins with the h dealing with the death of her husband and uncovering information that links back to H and his family. She is also in trouble (accused of killing her husband.) The H is cold and sometimes cruel to h when they meet again. He still loves her but won't admit it and still dealing with unresolved feelings regarding his mother's abandonment. H does blame h for the failure of their relationship and feels betrayed that she didn't support him and/or love him enough. He sees it as abandonment - especially when she married another man.

I liked this one - I actually think this should have been a little longer. The author did a good job though with the amount of information, all the characters from 2 other books, the history and current situation of the H/h. I did not feel lost or confused by not having read the 2 previous books about his brothers. The mystery of their mother is a continuing plot line to this 3rd book. Recommended to those who like romantic suspense, 2nd chances and cruel/jerk heroes. 3.5 - 4 stars.

That was the last one. I don't know why, but often the first title of a series is the lamer and the series improves going on. There are some exceptions, for me, like SEP'Chicago Stars or NS's Psy-Changelings but usually I find the first one not as good as the followers.

BTW this one was the best for me. A bit violent, one thing I didn't like it's the book is very graphic about everything, sex, violence and so on. But really I liked it. Both hero and heroine were strong and able to take care of themselves and maybe that was the first problem between them. I like how both (but mostly him) were ready to compromise in order to have a good relationship.

I like JA style and I think I'll keep reading her books.

Another full 4 stars.

I didn't have much hope starting this book since the second book in the series Kept was a big disappointment...

But this was really good...and for once it wasn't the female being the stupid stubborn one...I liked that :-)

and I'm sad to say that the plot is not that hard to believe....I wish I could say that something like that would never ever happen..but the truth is that it does happen...

Quite liked it. It was only the graphic language in the "it" scenes and the certain words to describe certain body parts that wasn't endearing to me, but I was able to go past it and enjoy the book.
Liked the entire confession and opening about the past scene a lot.

Unleashed was a pleasant surprise. It was hot and sexy, had a vaguely unlikely plot but it was also probably the most reasonable plot I’ve read in a romantic suspense. It is part of an overarching story of three brothers who have a private security company called Gemini Security. They’re a little cheesy at times – like the fact that they all wear GPS watches to show them where they are at all times. And there’s the typical strain of too much saccharine when the men find happiness with a woman. This is common in romantic suspense. Families all love each other and protect each other in this really over the top way. But okay, I accept that as part of the genre.

When Caroline, his high school love, comes to him asking him for help in solving her husband’s murder, he accepts because there is a link to his mother’s vanishing, some eighteen years before. If it sounds like a strained connection, it is. But it eventually ties up pretty nicely. Basically they discover that her husband was involved in an illegal adoption ring, getting young girls pregnant and then selling the babies. His mother had volunteered at the shelter, and Caroline’s husband – eighteen years ago – had killed her because she stumbled onto the conspiracy.

The relationship is written very well. Danny wants to fuck Caroline because he’s always found her hot – and he has fond memories of their high school sex. It starts as a sort of hate fuck – which is pretty hot – and then he just can’t handle it, and he becomes a surly jerk. The Surly Jerk is a sort of romantic suspense trope. They all have to be jerks so the woman can ‘tame’ him and make him civilized. But the sex is twinned with some genuine emotion, so the relationship works on all levels.

His moment of realization that he still loves her was very touching. I found myself being mad at myself that I actually liked it. Very sweet, and hot, sex followed.

The climax was good except the author rather gratuitously makes sure that Caroline is nude when she’s kidnapped, a rather obvious and pointless fact that really did take away from the action.

After she’s kidnapped, life seems like it will be fine for Danny and Caroline. Yet, Danny turns on his surly act. Caroline finally grows a spine and tells him that she can’t live with that anymore. He has to be able to communicate. So he just vanishes for a few weeks. It reads a little over dramatic. He becomes a slobbering drunk. It’s really unattractive.

Then his father talks to him about he should have worked harder to please his mother before she was murdered. This is one of those cringe-worthy cheesy moments I described earlier. It’s just too uncomfortable for me. Anyway, he literally chases her down on a mountain in New Zealand (she’s hiking with a group, and he runs up the mountain for her). He professes his love, vows to change, and they have sex.

Overall, it’s a good book and a good example of its genre. I would recommend it with the caution that there are those cheesy moments are very cheesy, and they’re embarrassing to read. But they thankfully don’t last long and you can move on to some awesome sex.

What a cracking climax (pardon the pun) to thr Gemini series! The emotional complexities with Scary Danny are just superb. The previous two books were just hot, hot, hot but this one was hot AND a great story It's so well-written that I actually bought the old hooking-up-with-ex storyline, which normally just raises a sigh! and a tut! from me. The hero is a hot hunk and the heroine is his strong but damaged ex. The thriller side-story is also really great. Loved it.

This book was very Shannon McKenna like. It had a bit too much of what I call the "ick factor" for my personal taste. The story kept me interested but dragged in a few places. I did like both Danny and Caroline. I always enjoy stories of people reconnecting after being apart for years. It was good but not great.

I liked it in general but I was put off by the two main characters describing the "bad"guy. He was only in his fifty's but they had him on Viagra and kept referring to him as old and decrepit. I take offence for myself and for the men in my life in their fifties.

The third book i still gave 4☆ I enjoyed the story, but I wasn't that much . Danny's story seems to be the funniest in the Gemini man series. Loved the part about investigation , it felt very exciting more then the entire of these series but if the spicy part i like it in kept and caught

Very good

I have really enjoyed all of Ms Alden's books from the Gemini men to the dead wrong series! Well almost anyway (didnt care much for Derek and Alyssa's book for some reason) but this one I think was my favorite. Very well written, good story and good chemistry. The author introduces so many more characters each book I wish they would all get their HEA. Especially the last two men who work for gemini... hint hint Ms Alden haha.

Enjoyed this a lot, especially Caroline, but Kevin Free (who I typically enjoy) was a terrible choice for narrator. He made Danny sound like a teenager and Caroline had this raspy voice like a cross between Roz from Monsters Inc & Marge Simpson. It made the sex scenes (which were actually pretty hot) cringey. The mystery seemed dragged out about 2 hours too long but it was still pretty interesting.

Book 4 stars
Narration 2 stars

Like the two other books in this series, I enjoyed the action and suspense. All three of the brothers are hot, intelligent bad-asses.

Danny was a complicated character. He stirred so many emotions in me…He had some serious issues stemming from the two most important relationships of his life – his mom, and Caroline. He felt abandoned and betrayed by both, and the result was a surly, belligerent, untrusting son of a bitch. He was so raw there were times no one was exempt from his wrath, including his family. But once Caroline started breaking down his walls, you could see the tenderness and love he was capable of. I loved them together. They were sweet and sexy. I wanted to kick his ass for his behavior towards the end, but he eventually grew a pair and got his woman back.

I got my answers to the mom mystery. It was sad, but it gave the family the opportunity to move forward and grow. A great series!

I like that Caroline was able to - eventually - feel again. I liked Caroline, too. I liked her attitude and drive. The passion between these two was explosive and the storyline had me hooked. I was so happy they got to Kaylee in time.

Danny...that Danny was a fucktard though. Selfish, controlling and arrogant. Drinking himself silly after she left just pissed me off more - but it was totally something he'd do. So Danny was a scared, hurt, angry little boy on the inside. What did he do when something threatened to make him feel anything? He closed himself off and held everything inside.

It was good that the issue of their mother had finally been solved. The conflict in the story is not for the lighthearted though. This book was very intense.

Danny Taggart is the biggest badass of all the Gemini Men. And there's only one thing a woman can do with a man this hot, hard, and ready for action. Give he a taste of his own damn medicine. Danny wanted Caroline Medford with a passion that he has kept bottled up for 12 years. Once he gets her he still continues to push her away.

Caroline needs Danny's skill, for investigation as well as other things. They enter into a test of wills to uncover a secret that has been buried for 18 years. When the truth of a 12 year old secret is revealed in the heat of frustration and anger.

Check out the last installment of the Gemini Men.

I have not read the previous books regarding the Taggart brothers and I thought it might ruin the story for me since this is not book one. However I was pleasantly suprised at this book. It has mystery and romance. Danny is a man who keeps everything bottled up and Caroline is the only woman he has ever loved. They were high school sweethearts and they drifted apart. Now the find each other once again by a tragedy but leaves Caroline in need of Danny's help. She's accused of killing her older and richer husband and must now prove her innocence with Danny's help.

This was my favorite of the three books. I could not wait to read about Danny and this did not disappoint. He was such an asshole throughout the series and knew that he would be an emotionally charged man, This guy had so much baggage and unresolved feelings it literally tore at my heart reading.

The chemistry between him and Caroline was real, emotional and they had so much history that needed to be dealt with. I am disappointed that it has ended and look forward to reading more by JA.Jami Alden

Danny, you are a gigantic ASS. You had my blood boiling and not in regards to sex scenes. Sure you are great at your job and show real courage and real expertise at what you do but as a person.... Grrrrrr. Of course, you kinda figured this out already about Danny. But if you have read the series, by the time you finish this book, you understand complexities and complications and issues the characters have...

I wasn't a big fan of either Danny or his brother Derek but Danny had better character development. I liked the scene where Caroline unleashes on him and he spends the night ruminating about what she said. I also thought it was more believable when he pushed her away again in the end. No one is going to change their coping strategies/temperament that quickly so his behavior seemed more authentic to me. I also really liked the way the author tied up the storyline about Anne Taggart.

The 3rd book in this series and author. This about the oldest of the brothers and a past "Love". The only reason I didn't give it a 5 stars is because I'm not a big fan of stories that back and forth in time. Yes, you need it in this story but I just not a big fan of it.

BTW I think the "model" they used on the cover wasn't right for the book. Good looking guy but WAY too young looking! JMHO!

This was an excellent suspense plot with a wonderful, fast-paced mystery solved, which was ruined by a half-baked erotic romance subplot that was intended to be the main plot. The hero ends up going after the girl, 12 years after abandoning her, and then abandons her again. He follows her for a make-up attempt, and she trusts him?

I have no respect for either of them, but liked the mystery.
