The Gorgon in The Gully is Melina Marchetta's 2010 debut for middle readers.
I bought this book for me my boys, Sam and Reuben.
Here they are ^ (taken down the road from our place):
Sam on the left is 10 years (grade 4) and Reuben on the right is 9 (grade 3)
Danny Griggs, our protagonist, is in grade 4 and he's an Australian boy, so right from the start my boys related. Even though it is perfect independent reading level for both Sam and Reubs, this is one we saved for me reading out loud to them at bedtime.
Reviews from my boys
Sam: The Gorgon in the Gully is awesome and funny. I hope a sequel comes out because I would like to read it. My favourite character was Jonah Griggs because he was a cool big brother and he buys Danny stuff off ebay. My favourite part was the end because I didn't know what was going to happen.
Reuben: I reckon it's pretty funny how it actually says what a Gorgon is on the internet. Even though they probably don't even exist. I like it how they thought it was a real Gorgon in the gully but ... [had to edit him out, a tiny bit spoilery!]. I like how they were always making strategies and planning things. Akbar was funny but my favourite character is Danny because he is the one who is brave enough to go down in the gully even though he is scared of a lot of stuff.
From me: The Gorgon in The Gully is classic Melina Marchetta. It's not only charming, funny and intriguing but it is full of of heart. I love how Marchetta brings a cast of characters together. She has a gift for taking random, at-odds characters and creating community. Not only community amongst her characters, but they come to life for me as a reader and I feel like I belong in the community too. I love her dialogue, which bounces off each character so well.
Above all, the characters are so endearing.. It's a brave and smiley story, I think it would charm any child. It's especially perfect for boys, I am amazed (although I shouldn't be) just how Marchetta writes as if she is inside a ten year old boys head. Danny was captivating, what a charmer! (He is going to be a heart breaker when he grows up).
As for reading it to my kids: They loved it (one more chapter, Mum!). They laughed out loud. So. Much. (particularly Reuben, he kept laughing at lines that I didn't think were supposed to be funny, LOL.) They loved the culture references, from Indiana Jones to Beast Quest, and the inclusion of cricket and soccer and playground antics. It oozes Aussieness from the reference (meat pies) to the way the kids hack out on each other to show affection. The humour builds right through to the climax, with running jokes and clever motifs. It was fun to read out-loud (I owned Akbar's Mum;s Indian accent ;)) and it was so awesome to read word-for-word Aussie slang/terms the whole way through (often when I read imported MG, I switch words like cafeteria to canteen, etc).

Oh, I got very nostalgic for Jellicoe while reading this book. The above quote just about broke my heart (as I swooned a little) thinking about Jonah and Taylor again. As for Jonah as a big brother, he is fiercely protective towards Danny, cheering the little guy on. I loved seeing Jonah from Danny's perspective, his hero, tough and smart and pretty much invincible. I was also very touched by the conversation between Jonah and Danny on pages 97 - 100.
Any fan of Melina Marchetta (or Jonah Griggs) would love this book.

Danny waited for his brother Jonah to ring. Jonah was at a camp out bush for the next six weeks. There wasn't much phone coverage where Jonah was, but Danny's brother managed to find a spot every night to call. No matter what.
'What's up mate?'
Danny loved it when his brother called him that because Jonah was his bestest friend in the world even though he was nine years older than Danny. (p 14)

That night he (Danny) asked Jonah if he could take $9.49 out of Jonah's secret stash that only Danny and his mum and jack knew about. Jonah kept it in his sock drawer next to a photograph of Jonah and a girl with sad eyes, taken in one of those railway station booths. (p30)

This is my last Marchetta book. It kinda feels like a sad moment.
I thought I would celebrate with a picture. :)
But just imagine balloons and fireworks in the background! :D
Then Akbar did something that really frightened Danny. He pointed at both of his eyes with two fingers and then pointed at Danny with the same two fingers. 'That means he's watching you', Jackson explained.
Things in Danny's life were getting more and more frightening every day.
I was having a study session in the library when I decided to take a break and pull this out.
Urmmm, if I had been warned that this was going to be ridiculously hilarious then I would have waited until I got home.
No point beating around the bush, I suppose. I read Gorgon for my dear Jonah Griggs. :P
Although, I did expect him to make an appearance early on in the book.
Instead, you get a slice of Jonah through a series of phone-calls that he makes in the book - so just to warn you - if you're expecting the Jonah that you know from JR, and more of him, then you might be disappointed. Obviously, he is different with his little brother: gentler almost. You can see why Danny looks up to his older brother so much. They share some very cute moments.
Once again, Marchetta has compiled a cast that made me smile and laugh. So often, in fact, that my bro asked me many times what in the world I was laughing and grinning about. And yes, it is definitely awkward when you're sitting in quiet environment!
Our protagonist, Danny Griggs, is constantly picked on at school for being a scardy-cat. So when in a moment of haste he says that he'll go down the gully; he regrets it instantly. Best mates Bella and Jackson are quick to be by his side though. And it's not before long until Akbar, bully Simon, and his crush Georgina join in on this little mission of his. They need a plan if Danny is to go in the Gully completely unnoticed, and so they quickly decide to think up of the best plan ever!
There is something delightful, wonderful and very endearing about these characters. Whether it's Danny's fears, Bella's feistiness and strength, Akbar's insecurities, Jackson and Georgina's kindness and Simon great want to belong.
It's a small book, but even now when I think of these guys I can already see them being best mates years down the line. I can see romances forming and real life coming in the way. And I can see JR all over again. I would so love a sequel that features them all grown up. How lovely would that be?

'Can you lend me $2.41?'
'Can you find me Beast Quest number five on eBay?'
The list went on and on. But until today, Jonah had never asked him for one single thing.

Melina Marchetta is my favorite author EVER. I will read anything she writes. When I found out that she was releasing a children's book, I knew I wanted to read it. And when I found it was about Danny Griggs, the little brother of Jonah Griggs (my favorite male character of all time) from Jellicoe Road (my favorite book in the entire world), I knew I had to get my hands on a copy! Sadly, Australian books are hard to come by and shipping is pretty expensive to the US, so I thought it would be awhile before I ever got a chance to read it. But then a miracle... FishpondWorld.com! Three weeks after ordering it I finally received it in the mail. I read it as soon as I could, and it was worth the wait! I just loved it!
There's a legend about an evil monster called the Gorgon that lives in the gully at the St. Raph's schoolyard. If any ball happens to fall in the gully, it's lost forever because no one will ever dare risk facing the Gorgon. But after Danny Griggs accidentally hits a classmate's soccer ball (the lucky soccer ball signed by Harry Kewell that will help them win the grand final!) into the gully and gets called a gutless wonder by the school bully, Danny decides he's going to stop being afraid and venture into the gully. With the help of his friends and his older brother Jonah, Danny hatches a plan to retrieve the ball from the gully and along the way learns to overcome his fears and the importance of friendships.
The Gorgon in the Gully had the humor and friendships Melina Marchetta is awesome at, but in a much more innocent form (the characters are little kids, of course!). It was such a cute read. I mean, c'mon, mini-Melina Marchetta characters? So adorable! All the characters were great, and Danny was my favorite! He's a sweetie, and I loved how he wanted to be courageous even though he was terrified. I do think he's a whole lot braver than he gives himself credit for. I loved the relationships Danny had with his friends and how he made new friends, and I also loved reading his interactions with his mother, Jonah, and Jack, his mother's boyfriend. Danny was really such a nice character to read about. :)
This story actually takes place during the same time as Jellicoe Road, so I think you'll appreciate it even more if you're a Jellicoe Road fan. Especially if you love Jonah Griggs. He was in this a lot more than I expected. And yes, I had a HUGE stupid grin on my face ever single time he was mentioned. I didn't believe it was possible, but I love him even more now!
Really, I could go on and on, but since this is a short story, I don't want to end up spoiling everything. This is a book about friendships and overcoming fears, and it's definitely a great read for children. I also recommended it to Melina Marchetta fans, who need a quick Melina Marchetta fix before the next book release! :D

Beautiful and inspiring
There was this time when I looked at a picture and thought it was a man with horns, but when I stepped up to study it I could see it was actually a butterfly with wings standing up straight. That’s what happens when you stop looking at things from far away. My advice… look at whatever you’re scared of from a different angle. Look at it up really close…
I’ve come to expect nothing short of magical and flawless from Melina Marchetta and The Gorgon in the Gully is no exception to the greatness she is able to produce. I loved this children’s tale that was filled with awe-inspiring wisdom and characters truly worth my time and attention.
In this story Danny Griggs is forced to face one of the many fears that paralyze him on a daily basis. He accidently kicks a lucky soccer (I’m American… we call it soccer :P) ball down the gully where a mystical gorgon is said to live. His timing couldn’t be worse because it’s right before the big game and the team needs that ball to ensure their victory. What ensues is a ton of planning, strategizing and collaborating on Danny’s part because sometimes it takes a team to accomplish a mission.
This book really represents what Marchetta is masterful at. She weaves a tale that not only includes a cast that commands your attention, but she seamlessly enraptures you with a story that leaves you walking away with valuable lessons about fear, friendships, personal strength and the importance of family. I loved every page of this book. What a treat that I’m so grateful my Booker friend was kind enough to share with me. Shear perfection!

This is just a really cute, feel-good children's book with a nice message about fear and how to overcome it. A definite must for Marchetta fans!

I am the biggest fan of Jellicoe Road you'll find around these parts. I talk to my contemporary-book-hating best friend about my favourite novel, I recommend it to my mom, I squeal about it to my boyfriend, and I even tell my (dying) cat that I'll never, ever, EVER forget a book like Jellicoe. The Gorgon in the Gully is perfect for readers like my sister, who still reads chapter books and hasn't read Jellicoe, and it's also perfect for people who have, be the reader an adult, teen or eight year old kid.
Danny Griggs is the perfect son and student, the adorable - and adoring - little brother, the hopeful friend…and he’s also the one on the playground who's scared of every. single. thing. So when it’s his fault that the footy gets stuck in the gully where the legendary gorgon is, Danny figures it’s time to show that he’s not just the good boy, but that he’s also just as brave.
There are many valuable lessons in GITG, and many intellectual conversations and characters. Danny was a great main character, and the friends he makes in class, in order to get back the special footy – it’s supposed to bring good luck, and that’s what the fourth grade needs for the upcoming, big game – are just as special and unique. I loved getting a glimpse into the Griggs household – and checking out the softest side of Jonah Griggs.
I’m so thankful to Carmel who sent the book around the world for us unfortunates to read it. I loved the book and can’t wait to get more Marchetta, even if I must only read 118-pages.

I might need to sell a kidney to get a paper copy for my little one (I’ve been searching for years and finally decided to read the ebook instead).
“The Gorgon in the Gully” is such a heartwarming story about friendship and courage and it must be so inspiring for the youngsters. Too cute for words and Danny is a sweet and lovely character. I also loved his friends, I laughed with them, crossed my fingers for them and cheered with them all.
And then there is Jonah.
This tender side of his makes me love him even more. (And he kept a picture all those years!)

SO MUCH CUTE OH MY GOD??? I LOVE LOVE LOVE

- Still super great. Danny Griggs is my baby alongside Luca Spinelli and Anabel Mackee. Made me wish we had a book on Luca and/or Anabel at this age.
- I loved all the Jonah mentions; I believe that Gorgon occurred at the same time as Jellicoe, as Jonah was out bush in this story. Also, props to Jonah being the best brother in the world, finding a spot with cell coverage so he could call Danny every night. EVERY. NIGHT. Also don't forget that Jonah kept a photo of himself and Taylor in his drawer.
- Louise Griggs is a super woman and a Character. I LOVE HER. I love Danny's relationship with her. I love how she spends quality time with Danny every night before bed, and giving him advice, and being super patient with him. I love her so much.
- I love Danny's character growth, his whole relationship with Simon especially. Simon is also my baby, I'm adopting him, I'll protect him with my lyfe.

I have decided that for all my reviews for Marchetta I will just say :It's 'Melina Marchetta' baby! ,
and that should just suffice for you to know that it is a 5 stars book.
Because Marchetta IS the 5-golden-stars writer of my heart.
Even when she writes kids stories.
(And after reading this, I am pretty sure I could love ANYTHING Marchetta writes..even if it was the wether forecast or the grocery shopping list!)
Sam (10 y/o) and Reuben (9 y/o) have already done a pretty great review for The Gorgon in the Gully, that you can all read here. (Thanks Nomes)
So let me just add, that this book only confirms, what an amazing storyteller she is.
The story of Danny who tries to overcome his fears is very educational, even for an adult like me.
And to add to the awesomeness of it all..there is
Jonah Griggs in it!
This is a book that any Melina Marchetta's fan should have on his/her book shelf (next to On the Jellicoe Road).

This book is SO DARLING! So sweet! I feel like I'm swimming in the warm fuzzy sea right now!
How has this not been released everywhere? There are children I want to buy this for.

At First Sight: Danny Griggs has always been afraid of pretty much everything in his life - from the possible monster under his bed or the shadows under the door; to calling a classmate and them not remembering who he is - so he's more surprised than anyone when he volunteers to retrieve a special soccer ball that went down the mythical Gully at the edge of St. Raphael's playground.
In the Gully, everyone knows, there is a Gorgon - a gruesome monster that hoards and keeps everything that goes into it's territory.
Danny would really like to take back his words but he knows he can't or he'll be forever more known as a coward! Instead -and after consulting with his older brother Jonah - Danny starts to device a plan to go down the Gully and retrieve the soccer ball (which his team needs to win the big finals!), a plan that starts simple enough, involving his friends Jackson and Bella, and soon expands to include Simmo - the playground's bully - and pretty much everyone else in Year 4.
Second Glance: I have no shame in confessing that I first wanted to read this book because Danny is Jonah Griggs' younger brother and that I knew that there was some Jonah in the story. But in the end, Danny and The Gorgon in the Gully won me over on their own.
Danny is just such a sweet kid: he loves everyone in his family, even his Mom's boyfriend; he is loyal to his friends and all he wants is to get some play time in the soccer finals; and he's resourceful and tries to do the right thing, and even when he doesn't he tries to make it right.
I also loved the secondary characters. In a very simple way, all type of elementary school cliques were displayed but in such a way that I was like "Yup, that's what elementary school is like!" and I never felt like they were cartoonish, even though the book is pretty short.
Bottom Line: The Gorgon in the Gully was such a lovely read, even if you're not a kid, it will totally bring you back to those days where everything was both complex and pretty simple at the same time. It's sweet story, and I was a nice message - though it's not heavy handed - about what courage and friendship mean.

Exactly what has Melina Marchetta’s books reduced me to endure? The greatest time suck otherwise known as philpost. Almost a month ago, some awesome people decided to put The Gorgon in the Gully on tour. Being the Melina Marchetta fan that I am, I did not hesitate to sign up: First up, Carmel Fauth sourcing it out (awesome lady…*woot*) Then Catie (another awesome lady for taking charge.) Then ME!!!! Yay! But one week, two weeks, three weeks later with the book nowhere in sight, I was starting to feel guilty for joining: I had unwittingly frustrated the hopes of fellow Marchetta fans by the hold up. What’s worse, I was getting impatient (understatement of the year!) Now, imagine my DELIGHT when this was delivered:

The Gorgon in the Gully was a sweet read. It felt good reading about Jonah again. And I suppose this sentiment has been said time and time again, but I must needs repeat it: Melina Marchetta can do no wrong! The story is simple. I couldn’t help but smile. So simple in fact that it can be described in just a couple of words: friends and growing up. And being afraid. Danny Griggs has tons of things he’s afraid of. What a super cute wonderful lovely book! I don't usually read books for this age group, but when I saw it was Melina Marchetta I knew I had to get my hands on it.
So the book follows the story of Danny Griggs (brother of swoon-worthy cadet Jonah Griggs who just happens to be fighting a territory war in Jellicoe) during year 4 and Danny has his own battle to face. After losing his footie team's good luck charm he must face the Gorgon of the Gully in order to get it back.
I have to say the work these kids put into the production just to get Danny down into that gully was quite comical. These kids are organized! While reading I just knew it wasn't going to end well, and surprise surprise when it didn't.
But as with all Melina Marchetta books, even those for younger readers, the book isn't really about facing the Gorgon. It has more to do with facing your fears and finding those special friendships. The ones that are worth fighting for and have the potential to last a lifetime. And once again she writes it beautifully.
A HUGE thank you to Carmel for sending me this lovely book all the way from Australia. I appreciate it more than I can say, and she started a Melina around the World group so her book (only released in Australia) is now travelling the world thanks to her and Catie. Well done friends. Well done!

More updates: The best feeling having read this book comes a day after, that is today, when my DD tells me she learns that it's no use being afraid of something we do not know (she's 6 btw) and she is so happy for Danny, that he overcame his fears :) cheers for Danny!
This is one book she'll be keeping to read on her own in the future. I'm sure she'd love it even more!

I read the first few chapters to my daughter and she was laughing out so much my goodness! and we were having so much fun imagining the "gutless wonders" of a supposedly scaredy cat Danny Griggs! His family and friends are just about as adorable as he is. I hope everyone gets a copy and have a great time reading this soon. It's for children and everyone up to a hundred years old or more!

Beautiful story. Loved every minute of it. Danny was engaging and incredibly real as were his school experiences and friends. His fears and blind spots are things almost anyone can associate with. The middle portion and toward the end actually had me choking up in happiness at what Danny was doing instinctively. Every kid needs a Danny in their life. I hope my son can be a Danny to others. I love the importance that family, friendship, and the perspective of truth hold in this book. Lovely, engaging story and I hope Marchetta writes more children's books in the future.

I really liked this one! Thanks to Carmel who kicked off the Melina Around The World Tour:-) Not only is it a great book for kids, there are some valuable lessons in there for adults too. The best part for me was the frequent 'appearance' of my boy Jonah (swoon) and I especially liked it when Danny spoke of the photograph in the drawer of Jonah and 'a girl with sad eyes'. Loved to see Taylor getting a mention too!

I don't read much in the way of young reader or middle grade books, but I read this because it is Melina Marchetta. I love Melina, and she didn't disappoint here.
I love Danny with all of his fears, but his willingness to still face them. I love his interaction with his friends and his family, particularly Simon and Jonah. Knowing his family background from Jellicoe, it interesting to see how much Jonah and their mom have protected Danny.

I really liked this book, it was really well written for a kids book. I read it for a "challenge" where a book is sent around the world for different people to read then send on to the next person on the list, which was really cool to participate in. I've heard a lot of good things about Melina Marchetta and I wasn't disappointed. I thought her writing and humor were very good and I'm interested to see what her YA books are like.

Milý detský príbeh o prekonávaní strachu. A typicky marchettovské, čiže skvelo napísané a s hŕstkou postáv, ktoré si musíte zamilovať. Po dočítaní mám chuť dať si rereading Jellicoe Road - tá malá dávka Jonaha Griggsa mi nestačila.

Cute! I enjoyed the lifes lessons the kids learned, about facing your fears, and seeing things from someone elses' perspective. Nice hearing from Jellicoe's Jonah ;D

You know the Marchetta girlies (myself included) are only reading this because Jonah Griggs is in it.
This is really cute and a sort of a mini version of Melina Marchetta's YA and adult novels. This time around it's a group of little kids coming together to face their demons (or, in this case, "gorgon") and everything's a lot more innocent. A sweet and quick read.
Only Melina Marchetta could get me to read a book about soccer-playing fourth graders.

The Gorgon in the Gully was just what I needed today. It's been just a few months since I first realized that the main character in this book is the little brother of Jonah Griggs from Jellicoe Road. And that there is a little bit of Jonah in this book. And because I that I needed it right away. And I'm so glad I read it. Because it's fun and cute and awesome.
This is not a very long book. Just over one hundred pages, yet there are very little pages with not that many words. Yet it was perfect. It tells a story, and a pretty amazing story as well. My review will not be very long, because as I said, short book. And it just tells one story, so there isn't all that much to talk about. But I do need to talk a little bit about it :)
This is a middle grade book told from the point of view of Danny Griggs. Who is an amazing person. I loved him a whole lot. He's pretty special too, although I felt like at the beginning he seemed a bit boring. But I still loved him. Thing is, he's scared of everything. Everything except for his family. Which is sort of cute, to be honest. We get to know him a lot, and his mom and Jack. I just loved getting to know Jonah's family better :) They all seemed pretty amazing. And I loved reading it all.
There is an interesting plot in this book. We get to see a lot of the school Danny goes to, and a lot of his friends and enemies. I loved reading about them all, because we get to know them a lot. I even liked all of them too. Especially Simon. He's not very nice in the beginning. But oh. He does change, and he was just one of the bestest friends. I adored him. It also broke my heart a bit to read about his home life, even though we didn't get to see all of it. Kind of makes me wish Melina will write about him later :)
Anyway. This is about the Gorgon in the gully. Won't say more about it, just that there is this thing Danny has decided to do. So there is a lot of planning and acting and I loved how all of the kids got together for it. It was cute. The Gorgon is someone or something living in the gully. And it has been taking everything that falls down there. Every kind of different balls and other items. Yet no one dare to go down there. Until Danny. I loved reading about it because it was interesting, fun and a bit sweet :)
The Gorgon in the Gully is an amazing book. There wasn't anything I didn't love about it. Well, okay, I might have wanted a tiny bit more Jonah, because I'm just like that. But it was amazing what we did get. Sigh. Jonah is just perfect. But yeah. This is the story of his brother, and I loved that even more. Because Danny was awesome too and I adored him a lot. This is a fun and quick read. It's a tiny bit sad, but not much. It was exciting all the time. So yes. I think you should all read this amazing book.

I'm excited to have finally had my turn with Gorgon as part of the Melina Around the World Challenge! Gorgon arrived late last week along with postcards from everywhere it's visited. For those that don't know, Melina Marchetta is an Australian author and not all of her books are available in the US. So when Carmel offered to send around a copy of Gorgon from Australia, a bunch of us jumped at the opportunity! Melina Marchetta instantly became one of my favorite authors after I read her amazing YA novels, On the Jellicoe Road and Finnikin of the Rock. When I found out that The Gorgon in the Gully's protagonist, Danny, was Jonah's (from Jellicoe Road, and one of my favorite male characters of all time) little brother, I wanted in on the fun.
The Gorgon in the Gully is so stink'n cute! It's a story about friendship, loyalty, and facing your fears. I love that Jonah appears in this book and is the BEST big brother EVER to Danny, which only makes me love him as a character more... Danny is a good kid - a great son, a good student, and the type of friend anyone would be lucky to have. He just happens to be afraid of... everything.
When Danny looses his team's lucky signed football in the gully, he realizes he needs to face his biggest fear of all to help out his team. In the process he makes unexpected friends and learns what can be accomplished when friends stick together. The Gorgon in the Gully is a heart-warming read that will leave your insides feeling warm and fuzzy.
I really enjoyed reading this, even as an adult. I wish this book was available to buy in the US, because there are at least 5 kids I'd like to gift this book to!
