Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.

DON BROWN, a former U.S. Navy JAG Officer, is the author of Zondervan’s riveting NAVY JUSTICE SERIES. a dynamic storyline chronicling the life and adventures of JAG officer ZACK BREWER. In 2003, Don began writing TREASON, his first novel in the NAVY JUSTICE SERIES. After TREASON was published to rave reviews in 2005, drawing comparisons to the writing style of John Grisham, DON BROWN was named as co-chairman of national I Love To Write Day, an event recognized by the governors of nine states to promote writing throughout the nation, and especially among the nation’s schools. HOSTAGE and DEFIANCE, the second and third novels in the series, were published in 2006 and 2007. BLACK SEA AFFAIR, was released in June of 2008, and with a bonechilling plot and precipient accuracy of international events, has been called the “Novel that Predicted the Russian-Georgian War,” which broke out just two months later, in August of 2008! Don is now penning his fifth novel, entitled THE MALACCAN CONSPIRACY, to be released in June of 2010. Paying no homage to political correctness, DON BROWN’S writing style is described as “gripping,” casting an entertaining and educational spin on a wide-range of current issues, from radicalIslamic infiltration of the military, to the explosive issue of gays in the military, to the modern day issues of presidential politics in the early 21st Century. The Charlotte World Newspaper described TREASON as “A DAVID VERSUS GOLIATH STORY FULL OF ACTION, INTRIGUE, AND THE KIND OF CALCULATED TYRANNY THAT YOU COULD FIND IN THE HEADLINES OF ANY MAJOR DAILY AT ANY MOMENT.” The Romance Reader’s Connection described Don’s novels as “fascinating and fresh.” In November of 2009, four years after it was released, and in the wake of Fort Hood, TREASON rocketed to the top-selling in the nation on the Amazon.com bestseller list for fiction, and remained there for over a week. On Thanksgiving Day of 2009, all four of Don’s novels were ranked in the top 5 on the Amazon bestseller list for fiction! DON BROWN graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1982, and after finishing law school, continued his post-graduate studies through the Naval War College, earning the Navy’s nonresident certificate in International Law. During his five years on active duty in the Navy, Don served in the Pentagon, was published in the Naval Law Review, and was also a recipient of the Navy Achievement Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.'

The story is gripping and a fun listen. However, the plot is similar to others in the series: bad Muslims prosecuted by the good Christian lawyer. Overwhelmingly political in that regard and that's the way it is with this author, no diversity in plot. Also, as a former Navy JAG, the author didn't do the research necessary to portray the operational Navy...errors are pretty obvious and written pursuant to a legal career. The narrator is hideous; his British accent led me to believe that it's a Royal Navy book...or suitable for Forester's Hornblower series. I can't believe that I read the whole thing.

I hope I have learned my lesson to stick with the "Mysteries, SF, Suspense Etc Genre"! If I start a book I always finish that book no matter how much I don't like it - I did so with this book and may change my habits from now on! Didn't like the ending at all, It kinda felt like the good guys lost at the end (I won't say what happen). I see that the book is listed as "Christian Fiction", wish I had known that before I started reading it, just way tooo dull! You may like this book, Not me!! David N.

I am loving these books in this series. Especially the the two main characters, Zack and Diane, and the Navy itself is so exciting. Also the jury trials are so exciting and suspenseful. This book ended on a sad note but hopefully in the last book of the series there will be some kind of redeeming situation. Now on to Defiance the last book in The Navy Justice Series.

Hostage is the well written second book in the Navy Justice Collection. The radical Islamic group that has infiltrated the U.S. Armed Forces has waged war on the U.S. and Israel and the result is horrific with chaos and international tensions. The storyline and characters are well developed with a lot of suspense and courtroom drama. This is an excellent five star sequel.

The first book was better; more character development and suspense. With all the proper military terms in regards to the legal system, jets, ships, equipment, etc, I became irritated with how many times characters "cycled the bolt on [their] pistol" or "worked the firing pin." I have removed the rest of the series from my RBR list because of this.

One of my favorite books by Don Brown. Hold on from the first chapter because the pace does not let up. If you enjoy Christian military suspense you will enjoy this book. This was actually my second read of this book and I enjoyed it just as much the second time through.

Incredible Christian Faith Story

A story of love, intrigue, and hate, that will wrap you so intently that you cannot stop reading.....praying for a happy ending. It is one of the most captivating books I have ever read and recommend it highly.

Exciting book

I enjoyed the authors style of having different plots going at the same time. I haven't been reading a lot but this kept my attention.

Don Brown in his new book, “Hostage” Book Two in the Navy Justice series published by Zondervan gives us an adventure with Zack Brewer.

From the back cover: Zack Brewer faces a choice. It can prevent the next war. But it will cost the life of the person he loves the most.

JAG Officer Zack Brewer’s prosecution of three terrorists posing as Navy chaplains was called the “court martial of the century” by the press. Now, with the limelight behind him, all Zack wants to do is forget. But the radical Islamic organization behind the chaplains has a long memory―and a thirst for revenge.

Now the Navy has a need for Zack that eclipses all else. When an unthinkable act of aggression brings Israel and its Arab neighbors to the brink of war, Zack and co-counsel Diane Colcernian are called to the case of a lifetime. As leading nations focus their gaze upon these two, other eyes are watching as well.

Zack and Diane are in harm’s way.

A kidnapping, an ultimatum…and suddenly, Zack faces an impossible choice. If he loses this case, the world could explode into war. If he wins, his partner―the woman he loves―will die.

And Zack himself may not survive to make the decision.

When Don Brown wants to do book two in a series it doesn’t just mean give them another adventure. It means pick up the storyline from the first one and keep it going. Let me tell you this is one exciting book. Here is what I recommend: eat dinner early, go to the bathroom, make your popcorn and turn off all your phones. You are not going to want to be disturbed while you are reading and you will want to finish the book before you go to bed. Don Brown knows how to write a perfect thriller. Zack is between a rock and a hard place. Do what he is told and Diane lives. Don’t do what he is told and Diane dies. The possibility also exists that Zack isn’t going to make it either. The action flies in this book and the suspense builds and builds with each page. All I can say is that you will be riveted as you flip pages as fast as you can read. You will not be disappointed. I recommend this book with enthusiasm!

I feel there could be a lot of depth in this book but Brown only skims the surface. In places where I think more detail is needed he just sums it up in a few words that I feel are inadequate. There was a lot leading up to the trial and then there was little substance to the actual trial itself. Even though I find these books to be less than stellar I still want to know what happens with Zack and Diane so I plan to read the third in the series.

The second book in the Navy Jag series continues the story of military justice against Islamic terrorists. As the young naval officer finds himself assigned to an even higher profile case, his assistant prosecutor and now love interest is kidnapped by the terrorists. He must somehow, not dwell on her state as the Navy and even the President of the United States depend on him to successfully prosecute and win this case.

I am really enjoying the series of books from Don Brown. The fist is Treason, the second is Hostage and the third is Defiance. Don is a Christian writer, but does now overpower the reader preaching. Encouraging prayer, the use of prayer and the recognition of a God are all themes that are woven very tastefully through the books

I finally had to put this one down about halfway through. It just wasn't developed enough of a plot for me and it got way too obvious what the authors political, social, and religious beliefs were for me. I'm not saying there's a problem with writing that way, I just don't enjoy novels that are so overwhelmingly politicized- I save that for my non-fiction reading.

This author is seemingly unheard of, but after having read two of his books, I can't understand why. I ADORE this series and am obsessing over buying number three now! LOL ;) His writing is realistic and compelling!

The second book of the Navy Justice Series continues the intensity of the first book, made all the more topical because of the events at Fort Hood. Don Brown speculated on that possibility long before that event became news.

This book has Zack back and he is great but gets his heart broken. I can't handle Zack with a broken heart! Few new characters. Lots of action-there is a kidnapping and then they hit the court room and it kinda drags for a bit. Get your kleenex ready though.

This was a good book. The first part was a little slow going for me, but then it really got exciting. You need to read Treason first to understand this one fully. I can't wait to read the next one.

Another great book from Don Brown!

What to say that I have not already said in appreciation of Brown's books! Hostage continues the Zack and Diane saga, as well as the intense court room drama. I am nearly through with book #3 and hope this series continues.

An enjoyable read, but many inaccuracies in the Russian transliterated text. It was puzzling that the author almost completely ignored the much greater loss of life of Muslim families in the bombing, and focused almost exclusively on the death of a single Jewish girl.

The 2nd book of the Navy Justice series and just as good or better than the first. I like that the main characters are religious and mention of prayer and the Bible are made.
