Out in the field the tall stalks sway in the breeze, hiding a girl lying on the ground as if asleep. But she doesn’t stir when rain falls from the gray sky and lands on her soft cheeks. Her beautiful dark eyes stare up, unseeing, as her blood mingles with the rich brown earth.
When a member of Detective Casey White’s team turns up at her door begging for help, Casey races to find the broken body of twenty-year-old Charlie Robson abandoned in a sunflower field. Yellow petals and broken stalks scatter the ground—and Casey immediately recognizes the red markings all over Charlie’s body as arrow wounds. Heartbroken, Casey vows to find the monster who would hunt Charlie down like this.
Interviewing Charlie’s distraught mother, Casey’s blood turns to ice when she learns about a tightknit group of Charlie’s best friends who once called themselves The Sunflower Girls. They met in archery club and have drifted apart since high school. Casey knows the killer is sending a message with arrows… could the other girls be next?
But as Casey instructs her colleagues to track down the five remaining friends, another girl’s body is found, shot with arrows in her own home. Clutched in her hand is a broken sunflower petal. Turning the house upside down Casey finds a bone-chilling, one-word note: Guilty.
Someone is picking off The Sunflower Girls one by one. But why? Interviewing the four remaining girls, Casey is certain they are hiding a dark secret that stretches back to their school days. Trusting no-one, Casey will have to risk everything to track down a deadly killer… but with her own team keeping secrets too, could the real danger be much closer to home?

Detective Casey White and her team investigate the murder of Charlie Robson who was killed in a sunflower field with a bow and arrow. Another girl winds up murdered in the same way. They find out that the girl’s were in an archery club in school years back and that the girls are being bumped off one by one. Many deadly secrets are revealed. This was a great read that I hated to put down. It’s 8th in the series and can easily be read as a standalone. Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC that will be released February 21, 2023!
I know that when I visit the Outer Banks I will never be disappointed and for me this is the best book in the series so far. This was a real page turner that kept me sat on the edge of my seat and tapping my kindle like a demented wood pecker. So many heart in your mouth moments, so much misdirection and emotional and ran extra bonus from this author. Loved it!!! and I need the next book now PLEASE!!!!!! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Detective Casey White and her fiancé Jericho are about a week away from leaving the Outer Banks to follow her daughter Tracy as she is moving out of town. It was not an easy decision but Casey has just found Tracy and longs to remain near her. While preparations are underway, one of their colleagues shows up at their home completely devastated. His niece has been murdered and he asks Casey to step in and to try and find the killer. Of course Casey will do anything and Jericho feels the same.
Several years earlier, a young team of archery players had come up with a name for themselves, The Sunflower Girls. As the victim Casey and her team are desperate to find justice for was found in a sunflower field, Casey soon learns a possible reason. Sadly, when the girls were very young, their coach took advantage of them. Now, Casey has to understand why a brutal murder would take place that apparently connects back to that tragic time for the girls.
Sadly, there is another victim, also connected to the case they are investigating, with the murders being very similar. There is another connection to both cases and it does not take Casey long to discover that it’s all goes back the abuse that the girls underwent at the hands of their coach. Could he now be exacting revenge on the girls that turned him in and testified against him? Or is something else at play? With their impending move weighing down on them, Casey stays laser focused in her attempts to identify and stop the killer.
Although this eighth book in the compelling Detective Casey White series could be read as a stand-alone, there is a lot of back story about Casey, Jericho and Tracy that the reader would miss if this series is read out of order. I do love how B. R. Spangler gives details that will allow the reader to easily read this book on its own, but if you want a good, well-written book that follows the lives of these dedicated characters, reading the previous titles will definitely be time well spent and enjoyed. Having picked up this fabulous series from Book Two, I am fully invested and cannot wait for the ninth book in a series that has become one of my favorites.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
I really liked this one. It kept me wanting to continue to see who the killer was. I really expected it to be either the coach or someone related to him, his daughter. Granted, he still had a connection to the killers, yes killers. I was not expecting their to be two. I can't believe both of them could have killed Casey. Im glad they didn't. Also, that ending! What a great way to keep us wanting more.

What a terrifying opener – a young woman hunted like an animal, before the fatal arrow hits and she recounts her paramedic training and what her body will experience – seriously chilling!!
The rest of the book is at pace as Casey and the team try to track and catch the perpetrator of this heinous killing. But this is not just a one off, no siree!! What I experienced was more brutal murderers at the hands of some psychopath archer!
Their Resting Place is brutal. It’s rare to have a modern-day murder weapon being a bow and arrow. This method of killing requires skill, training, practice to be effective! This is one dedicated killer!!!
Spangler has crafted a blood thirsty twisted crime thriller with personal threads interwoven seamlessly into the story and oh boy what a cliffhanger ending!!!! 😱😱😱 I need book 9 stat!!!!!!!
This book had me staying up late at night to finish it. The storyline was different and had me guessing what was going on. The young women that are being murdered have wounds that are puzzling to Detective Casey White and her team. Honestly, I was surprised how long it took all of them to figure out what the murder weapon was. I won’t go into it more because that would give too much away. The ending was surprising for sure. A great series to read if you like police procedurals. Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Their Resting Place is the 8th installment in the Detective Casey White series, and once again does not disappoint!
The book opens with an intense and bloody scene in a sunflower field and hooked me into the book immediately. Casey and her colleagues are called out to investigate, and while delving into the case another body turns up in another sunflower field. Both girls were found with invitations to the scenes with the word GUILTY printed on it, and upon their arrivals they met their deaths. But guilty of what? What is the killer punishing them for?
The book is twisty and I have so much to say to summarize it up, but don’t want to spoil anything. My only complaint is that there was no continuance from the previous book with something that happened to Casey. I expected a mention of her healing or some form of dealing with that happened, but it didn’t happen this book. Otherwise this was another fantastic addition to the series, and after how the epilogue left us hanging, I’m dying to see what rollercoaster the next book takes us on!
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my arc in exchange for my honest feedback!
Sunflowers and murder; the perfect combination for an eerie mystery.
This was the first book of the Detective Casey White series that I have read and I will certainly be returning for more. For Detective Casey White, all seemed well until Detective Emanuel Wilson asked her to personally investigate the case of a murdered college graduate named Charlie Robson. Killed by arrows in a Sunflower field, Charlie’s death prompted a complex investigation full of twists and turns, leading Casey and her team to find another victim. The case was nuanced and full of detail, and it was not without the danger and mystery that keeps me coming back to this genre. The cliffhanger at the end has left me eagerly anticipating the next book.
It's always a pleasure to find a crime fiction novel that is written with such emotion. The language was absolutely delightful and descriptive, the dialogue flowed naturally, and the characters were easy to connect with. There was an effortless fluctuation between themes of tragedy, family and more; making the novel not overwhelmingly methodical, which I sometimes find is the case with crime fiction. This one had me hooked from start to finish and I read it all in one sitting, soaking up the suspense, the mystery and characters.
I do believe that it can be read as a standalone but would be more enjoyable as a series. Context is given at the beginning that helped me understand the running plot involving Detective Casey White searching for her kidnapped daughter Hannah - now Tracy Fields, a crime scene technician - with whom she had been reunited in an earlier book.
Overall, I highly recommend this novel! The plot was incredibly intriguing and unique, and the characters were very captivating. With the focus on the investigation not overwhelming the story, but rather, complimenting the established narrative and characters themselves, I never felt bored or disinterested. My investment was not solely rooted in the investigation or the character’s relationships, but in both the characters and plot simultaneously. Though, what I liked most was B. R. Spangler’s descriptive writing style. I think anyone who enjoys innovative, vivid language will have their attention held from the first page. Then the characters and investigation tied it off in one brilliant must-read!
This book opens with an intense and heart breaking scene of a young woman running and pleading for her life. Bloody sunflower fields, a wicked murder weapon and a strange invitation with only one word written on it - "guilty" make this spine tingling mystery captivating. Detective Casey White is asked to assist in an investigation of a murder of young woman. Charlie Robson's shattered body has been found in a sunflower field with what at first appears to be many bullet holes. However, after further examination it is determined that she has been killed with arrows. The case becomes even more bizarre after Casey interviews the young woman's mother and finds out that Charlie was a member of an archery club in high school known as The Sunflower Girls. When another young woman's body riddled with holes is found in a sunflower field, the investigation rises to another level. Now the team is on a clock to find out who is targeting these young women, and they want to find the other members of the club before there is any further bloodshed.
This was an intriguing mystery that kept me engrossed into the book in the wee hours of the morning. The manner of death was disturbing to say the least. The author did a great job of keeping me guessing until the shocking twist at the end. The characters are well described and well liked. There is an underlying story with Casey and her soon to be husband, Jericho, as they try to decide if they are going to leave the Outer Banks. The author does a good job of filling in the blanks so that you will fully understand this back story.
The mystery was well written and bone chilling. It actually gave me the creeps as actual people became prey and the killer became a hunter. I highly recommend this book for thrill seekers and mystery lovers.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Their Resting Place, the eighth novel to feature Detective Casey White, set on the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
When Charlie Robson’s body is found in a sunflower field her cause of death is not immediately apparent. Further investigation suggests that she was killed by arrows and Casey starts to see links as Charlie was part of an archery club in high school and the called themselves the Sunflower Girls. Soon there are more victims and it looks like someone has a grudge against the Sunflower Girls.
I thoroughly enjoyed Their Resting Place, which is a fast moving read with both an interesting investigation and a slice of personal dilemmas. It gives the novel a rounded feel.
The novel is told almost entirely from Casey’s point of view, which offers the reader an immersive experience and a bird’s eye view of where the investigation is going and how she’s sorting her personal problems. I found the novel absorbing and fast moving and I didn’t guess the identity of the perpetrator or the motive, perhaps because it is development after development and I took my eye off the ball, or more likely because the author is good at what they do. To me, the solution seems very American, tied up in emotion and delusion with its roots in an age old behaviour.
This is the eighth novel in the series so Casey’s history is well known to those who follow it, but it is also neatly recapped for new readers. She is planning to follow her long lost daughter, Tracy, to Philadelphia, where Tracy’s partner has been offered a job. As it turns out neither Tracy nor Casey’s partner, Jericho are keen to go. What to do? It looks like the decision will be put off again with this novel ending in a cliffhanger, suggesting a new case.
Their Resting Place is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
TRIGGER WARNING: child sexual abuse The body of a young woman is found in a field of sunflowers. Her body is riddled with wounds and these are found to be arrow injuries. Casey White is called upon by the victim's family to investigate and finds a link to a current attempt to overturn a conviction... Their Resting Place is the 8th book to feature Detective Casey White, her family and team. There are no spoilers about the crimes in previous books but there are details about the friendships and relationships that continue from earlier books. A young woman is dead; she is a relative of a police officer who calls in Casey and her team. Links to the past are quickly made and Casey is repulsed by the historic child sex abuse she has to confront. She tries to protect other potential victims but more members of the archery team are found dead, hunted and killed with arrows. Some of the death descriptions and crime scene details are quite grisly even for the experienced detectives. I enjoyed the information about legal cases which forces Casey out of her comfort zone. There were plenty of twists and potential suspects so I was kept guessing until the end. The book includes a personal plotline which continues over the course of the book and isn't resolved by the end. Will Casey and Jericho move to Philiadelphia to be with her daughter, even though neither of them want to leave their home? There is a great cliffhanger to tempt you to read the next book... Their Resting Place is an entertaining and intriguing detective mystery novel.
I thought this was a cracker of a read, and a great addition to a very good series which is now one of my favourites. I loved the beginning, it certainly grabbed my attention and interest. As always the author has wrote an entertaining book that very much hit the mark with me. I love the main character and enjoy following her investigations - here she investigates a murder that is very personal to someone she used to work alongside, and I particularly liked the return of this character and how easily they fit into the story and plot line. The author gives the reader lovely glimpses into Casey’s personal and home life, and I love reading of the working rapport and friendships she has with her colleagues. I feel like I know the characters now, and that the author brings them to life through their writing and I can picture the scenes in my mind when reading. As the series progresses I think there has been great character development, and that the author has created such likeable, relatable and believable characters who you just root for from the start. Overall, a very good absorbing read that held my interest from start to finish. I loved the ending which sets up the next book nicely and I’ll be I looking forward to that. If you’re a fan of police procedurals give this series a try, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Detective Casey White returns, gearing up for a move back to Philadelphia now that her missing daughter Hannah has been found.
But before the move can happen Casey and her fiancée Jericho are needed to help when close friend and former colleague Emmanual calls to tell them his cousin Charlie has been murdered.
And as Casey, Jericho, Tracey and Nichelle set out to investigate they discover Charlie was found in a field of sunflowers lured there by an invite and the word 'GUILTY'
But what's Charlie guilty of? And who could've wanted her dead?
That's what Casey and the team have to find out fast, especially when Tracey finds out that someone is currently in prison for an identical crime.
And when the team learn that Charlie was a member of a high school archery team called the 'Sunflower Girls. 'They fear the killer will strike again. Unless they find them quickly.
And while the race to catch the killer was going on, I was hooked, and I had no idea who the killer was, until they were exposed. Which is what great crime fiction is all about and it's one of many reasons why I would happily recommend Their Resting Place and the series as a whole to others.
Oh! And I can't wait for book nine especially after that ending!
Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read Their Resting Place.
Their Resting Place is the eighth book in the series featuring Detective Casey White, a transplant from Philadelphia to the Outer Banks. The author does a good job of giving enough of Casey’s background for those readers who haven’t read the previous books.
Casey is investigating the murder of a young woman lured into a sunflower field, who was the cousin of one of her fellow detectives. And then additional murders follow. The story is fast-paced with lots of details about arrows, autopsies and blood splatter, so not for the faint of heart! What really makes this book, and the series, special is the development of the characters and their relationships. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Casey, her fiancé Jericho and her colleague and daughter Tracy!

This was an impulse blog tour that is a blog tour I chose to join after reading the blurb and thinking “I must do this”. My gut feeling was spot on because I couldn’t stop reading and had to go back and buy other books in this series (don't ask why I didn't do it before, it's complicated The characters, the plot, the twists were well done and made this story unputdownable. Casey is an interesting character: a strong woman who had to fight to get things right. She’s a well-rounded character, full of nuances and likeable. The plot is twisty and there’s a lot of darkness, we know since the beginning that there’s somebody full of rage and evil who’s killing these girls. Even if there’s enough clues to guess the root cause I couldn’t guess the culprit nor the motive. This is a tense crime thriller but I appreciated the empathy of the author toward the girls, how he dealt with the more sensitive topics and the sufferance of those grieving. A well plotted, gritty, and gripping story that I strongly recommend. Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for this arc, all opinions are mine.
Sunflowers . . . . arrows . . . . links to the past. Murder . . . . danger . . . . how long will it last? A promising team? Shattered dream.
Another murder investigation is underway An enthralling read, I have to say! An intriguing case with surprises all the way through Keeping you wondering what Casey White will do.
This time there are personal decisions to be made, too, Choosing where to live is difficult to do. Who is sending the notes to the victims and why? What is the reason they want them to die?
Looking into links from the past May help identify the killer at last. Different teams with different dreams Is all as it seems?
With great characters with lives of their own, Including a daughter who is now grown, Interactions that seem true to life And worries to add to their strife.
A great addition to this crime thriller series And that epilogue has me making more theories Now I can't wait for the next book to read I really enjoyed this and the next I now need!
For my complementary copy, I say thank you, As I share with you this, my honest review.
This is the 8th book in the Detective Casey White series. I haven’t read the previous books so I was a little lost regarding the relationships. The author does a good job of filling in the blanks though. Overall I thought this was a good read & would recommend.
Detective Casey White is thinking about her move when a member of her old team comes to her door asking for a favor. Can Casey find the killer of Emmanuel’s cousin?
Charlie Robson was just 20 years old when she was murdered in a sunflower field. Casey’s investigation uncovers a similar murder scene where a suspect was convicted, but he couldn’t be the killer. So who killed Charlie?
When Charlie’s mother shows the team an old yearbook, it becomes apparent there may be a link. The girls belonged to an archery team and called themselves ‘The Sunflower Girls’. Who is killing these girls and can Casey find the truth before anyone else becomes a victim?
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
We often don’t realise it, but in fact we are surrounded by a lot of weapons in our every day life. We don’t exactly see them as such, because for us they are ‘normal’ things like pencils or scissors or things we use when we exercise like dumbbells or other sport equipment.
A lot of killer might take, as you can call it, the easy way out. They use guns, knifes, … the more obvious things, but some of them look beyond of what is in front of them and are original in the worst possible way.
Do they want to earn the title of the most inventive one or do they simply use what they are comfortable with…?
When Casey and her team are called to investigate a horrific murder scene, they cannot get their heads around it, but when they dig deeper they find one person who catches their attention. But are they the one to blame of is there a lot more to be unraveled?
Sometimes crime scenes are horrifying and when you think it cannot get any worse, then you better think again.
Once again a person is not behaving in a ‘normal’ way and this devastating story is the result of it. A shame it had to end this way, but it certainly was the base of a terrific book. 5 stars
The synopsis does not match the story. Detective Casey White did not “immediately” recognize the wounds as arrow wounds. It took some time into the story for the medical examiner and Casey to reach that conclusion. Casey also knew about the notes beginning with Charlie’s murder, not with the later one. I also had a difficult time with the sentence structure and the unfortunate choice of some words in the story.
The cops taking over the ice cream shop and helping out with the customers seems implausible. I just can’t see that. Casey and Jericho’s relationship didn’t ring true.
I guess I had many problems with this book.
The premise is a very good one, however. Murder by arrow is unusual and I found that refreshing.
I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding this book to me so that I could read and review it. The opinions expressed in this review are solely my own.
I haven't read anything by B.R. Spangler before, and after finishing this book I will definitely be reading the rest of this series and following any more that come out. The author did a great job of catching us up on previous events so you don't have to have read the other book in this series to read this one. I was sucked in from the first page, and the investigation took me on a wild ride. There are times when we are sure who the killer is, but there are alibis and so many questions left to be answered that despite what we think we know, we haven't quite solved it yet. I loved the dynamics between the characters, they worked so well together and really cared about each other. and when we finally find out what was going on I was completely surprised! I can't wait to read all the other books in this series!
Another Solid Entry In Series. This is one of those police procedural, deep in series, books where you don't *have* to read earlier books first - enough of the backstory is explained to be able to follow here - but if you're a "NO SPOILERS EVER!!!!" type... read the series from Book 1. Seriously, there are references and explanations all the way back that far in this one. For the rest of us, this is a great entry into the series, yet again another with a particularly grisly murder mechanism and with equally solid relationship based drama. Spangler does well to keep every book in the series well grounded on both sides of the formula, and it continues to work well for him. This one in particular is another where there is a surprise reveal at the end such that you're going to want the next book *immediately* - I know I already do. Very much recommended.
This is the eighth book in the Detective Casey White series which I have been following since book four and as with the other books in the series this one doesn't disappoint.
Casey is tasked with identifying the killer of a colleague's niece after she is found brutally murdered in a Sunflowers field And as Casey begins her case other victims fall foul of t he came demise, not to mention the potential repercussions of a miscarriage of justice where an innocent man has been incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit and what do the crimes\victims all have in common Sunflowers, Archery and A Guilt note.
Casey is a fantastic character it's been great to follow her own development and that of both her personal and professional relationships which the author balances well.
A suspenseful thrilling chilling read that started with a blast and ended with a bang.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I am not sure I have read any of this series, but I will definitely be looking all the books up now. It fills you in with everything you need to know about the previous books in the series and I love Casey’s backstory. Her daughter, Jerico and her upcoming move make for an interesting personal life to balance with the case. The setting of the outer banks was also great. It’s one of my favorite places to vacation.
The team worked relentlessly to track down the killer. What started as one murder, turned into two with the idea there could be more. Told from Casey’s POV, the reader knows all she does as she is working the crime. The book moved at a quick pace and I did not want to put it down.
I highly recommend this read. It’s the best crime book I’ve read this year. It is on par with Lisa Regan and Angela Marsons’ series.
Their Resting Place (Detective Case White Book 8) by B.R. Spangler is a good mystery and suspense thriller. The only thing I found annoying was the constant mention within the first 5 chapters of the wounds being bullets or not. The characters kept mentioning Dr. Foster recovering the bullets; enough already, the reader gets that they may or may not be bullets.
The ending was also a bit implausible. But I cannot reveal the ending because it would give away the culprit.
The story had a good cliffhanger ending. However, the writing and story sometimes felt choppy, and the dialogue stilted. The Charlie story and the character were a bit unbelievable, and the reason for the killings.
I would give this a 3.5 out of 5 stars (rounded to 4).
Detective Casey White and her team are called to the scene of a puzzling murder in a Sunflower field. No bullet casings are found, and there are no bullets in the body, and eventually, Casey realises that the weapon used was a bow and arrow. When a second body is found in another Sunflower field, a link is made to the first, but who is picking off the Sunflower girls one at a time?
I enjoyed this, and again, a strong female lead. The main characters are very human, with human failings and scars from their past. In this book, it shows how the past can affect an individuals future. There is a cliffhanger at the end of this book and I can't wait to read the next!
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
When a former member of Casey's team turns up distraught he begs Casey for help. His cousin has been found brutally murdered. She promised to help him find out what happened.
Heading to the scene they find her in a field of sunflowers with numerous sounds on her body. And they can see she was left to bleed to death.
Who would do such an awful thing?
Making enquiries they find out the victim was part of an archery group at school known as the sunflower Girls. Is it a coincidence or connected to the horrific crime.
And then another girl from the group is killed.
Can Casey and the team find the killer before they can claim any more victims?
I love this series and this one was full of drama that kept me reading long into the night
Sunflowers are bright and shiny, but in the latest Casey White mystery, they harken death. Who is luring women to fields and then killing them? Casey and Jericho are about to,leave the coast, or are they? Spangler made my heart stop with that question. It doesn’t take long for the team to get to the heart of the matter and hunt down the culprit who has a quiver of shots ready to be dispatched. It’s a new approach to murder and very intriguing to read. I felt bad for Emmanuel and wonder what is next for him? Is it on to Philly finally? Will have to see... Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early read.
A very quick, fast paced suspense with characters I love. Charlie finds herself on a sunflower farm - deep in the stalks as a hunter pushes toward the kill zone. Casey and her team are assigned - as Emmanuel and Charlie were raised as siblings after his parents' deaths. The struggle to find any clues - beginning with determining the weapon used adds tension as another body is found. In sunflowers. Casey and Jericho are preparing for their move to Philadelphia - following Tracy and Nichelle. They struggle with the idea of leaving the Outer Banks - their home, friends and comfort. Very well done. Cannot wait for the next!
