The Preacher's Daughter

Rate this book
My father's church was on one end of the block and Slay conducted his business on the other. It was a street that, depending on which direction you were going, led you to heaven or to hell. At the time, I didn't have the fortitude to tell that as a disciple of the Lord, down on the corner is exactly where he needed to be - slinging scriptures as the dope boys slung rocks. I disobeyed my father's commandment and followed my heart... a decision that, indeed, led me to hell.

I won this book in a giveaway and was pleasantly surprised. It took me a while to get accustomed to the language/slang used (I had just read Anne Rice so this was an interesting transition). I do believe that this writing style helped make the book more enjoyable. The overall story was really good, I couldn't put it down and finished it in an evening. It was rather graphic and quite saucy at times, but it was a positive addition to the story (Although I'd reserve this one for adults only). Overall a good book. I would read more from this author. The book has been passed along to some girlfriends and I believe they will enjoy it as well. Thanks to Kendra for the giveaway!

Shar meets Slay at the age of twelve, but he doesn't touch her until her 18th birthday. She spends the next few years being "his." She learns the hard way that everything that glitters isn't gold. Shar learns a valuable lesson - the hard way.

What seems to start out as a predictable story of a good girl falling for a drug dealer quickly turns into a tale of a young girl battling an internal fight of living right or living for material things. I loved "The Preacher's Daughter" by Kendra Dunn. I thought it was going to be the same story of good girl meets bad boy, falls in love, and looses everything. Not even the case.

Great book, Kendra Dunn kept me reading until the end! I would love a part 2! I would like to see Shar get her revenge and see where things would go if Shar and Tyrell crossed paths again.

The Preacher's Daughter is the story of a preacher's daughter named Shar who falls in love with neighborhood king drug dealer. Since Shar was twelve Slay has had his eye on her because her looks and her good girl ways make her stand out from the other "broads in the hood," and she gave him her heart. When she is ready to graduate and move on to college, Slay steps in and uses her love for him to pull her into his world.

Shar is now faced with the hood life without the support of her preacher father and her family because of her choice to be with Slay. She is drawn in by the promises of Slay makes to her and the lavish lifestyle of living with him. Shar quickly realizes that this life is not all she believed it to be as she endures Slay's bouts of anger and abuse while competing for Slay's love and attention with his job and other women in his life. She eventually is forced to realize that you don't always get what you ask for or what you believed you had.

Kendra Dunn did an excellent job of painting the hood life for someone who has never been in that situation. It portrays the realities of living in that place and the consequences that happen when you choose "love" over your family. The story works to delineate the line between lust and love, and how love can make a person blind to real life, even someone from a decent family. Wondering what will happen to Shar and can she get up the strength to leave Slay kept me turning the pages late into the night.

This was my first time reading from Kendra Dunn, but she did a really good job with this book. The title may throw you off some because you may think by reading the title that the whole book is based in the church or that the story may be centered around the church.

The fact is that the man character Shar is the preachers daughter and Shar mets a guy at the tender age of 12 whom she fell in love with. She knew that being the Preacher's daughter and liking Slay would not be accepted in her family, Shar was trapped between two worlds like good and bad. The book shows how Shar was brough up as a child so you got a good sense of her early life until she got to be older.

This was a really good story and if your looking for love, betrayal, drama then this is the book for you there are a few twist and the book keeps you wanting more.

Shar was a young girl who grew up the right way but wanted a different life then the one her family had planned for her. So join Shar and read her journey through life and becoming older as she thinks she knows everything and doesnt listen to her family. Really good read!

Shar is the 17 year old daughter of a preacher that spent most of her time in church with her family, but instead wanted to spend time with the local Dope boy , Slay. She slowly conforms to her wants and finds out that everything her father warned her about is true.

I truly enjoyed this book and can't wait to see if there will be a continuation to this story. Way to go Kendra Dunn!

I won this book in the Goodreads Giveaway. It's not a book I normally would have picked out. I really liked the story line but for me it was hard to get past the language. It's crazy the things we do in the name of love and even crazier the things we put up with in the name of love.

I got in about 5 chapters and said no more. I couldn't stand the way the characters talked, and I couldnt grasp any connection to the female lead.
