Teaching readers about the history, culture, and archaeology of ancient times, each title tells the story of a different featured civilization through its inhabitants, focusing on different segments of its society, such as peasants, scholars, priests, soldiers, rulers, and more.
This is a good Maya history book. We always think that the Usborne guides are the gold standard in this genre (we like them more than DK, for instance), but this one was very good. More big text blocks than Usborne usually has, and a stretch for the 8-yr-old, but very informative. We read it out loud together. A good summary of this fascinating history.
This series has been a good jumping-off point for our studies of ancient civilizations. History is “boring,” per my sixth grader, but these shared readings manage to keep him engaged, and the content is concise without talking down.
