Read the second book in the Lost Clone series, a gripping sci-fi adventure full of twists and turns, compelling characters, and mysteries!
Jordan Rivet is an American author of YA science fiction and fantasy featuring determined heroines, vivid worlds, and daring missions. Originally from Arizona, she lives in Hong Kong with her husband.
Jordan's YA fantasy series include Steel and Fire, Empire of Talents, The Fire Queen’s Apprentice, and Art Mages of Lure. Her science fiction includes Wake Me After the Apocalypse, The Seabound Chronicles, and The Lost Clone.
Let me first mention again that I had only recently had my introduction to Jordan Rivet when reading Replacement for the SPSFC-3 competition. Even though it didn't end up a finalist and ultimate winner, I enjoyed it enough to be interested in continuing the series. Here we are literally the month the competition came to a close and I noticed there were audios available for the rest of the series. I decided to dive right into book two Batchmate.
Book one was a bit more Young Adult than my usual reads but that didn't detract from enjoying it. I looked at this series as a potential YA Sci-Fi Mysterious which seemed like a good break from my usual reads. Batchmate stuck to that vibe and I was not disappointed at all.
The pacing was quick and smooth in my opinion. As I mentioned a moment ago, I opted to listen to this on in audio format even though I do have an electric copy already on my Kindle. I felt that Talon David did an excellent job with the narration of this story. It fit what I was envisioning in my mind perfectly. Whenever I click with a narrator I can't help but think how difficult is has to be portraying both male and female voices. She really did an excellent job with Batchmate.
The story itself seems to flow very well. I didn't have any trouble keeping up with characters or locations. There continues to be a good amount of action sprinkled throughout these stories to keep things exciting on top of the mystery unfolding for us.
The worldbuilding was solid as things continue to expand. We continue to learn more and more about the people in this world and how they view it's technology. We have factions both for and against the clones. I suppose there are even those that are just indifferent going about their lives feeling if it doesn't have any direct effect on them, they don't mind one way or the other. Jordan continues to give us more and more information regarding the mystery of Jane's past in book two.
The character development was probably the strongest aspect of Batchmate. There are a good number of characters that can fall anywhere within the spectrum of protagonist and antagonist really. There are some really good characters in the Lost Clone series already. We see some growth with our main characters, and some possible clarification between their relationship (or do we?). I also have to mention we get some really good new characters introduced in book two as well. Plenty of interesting additions now that our young characters are heading off to Harbortown University.
I continue to have a lot of fun with the series and have my eye on book three Insider is available on Audible so I will more than likely pick that up by the end of the year and be caught up with the series. I'm not sure if this is designed to end with the trilogy or not.
As usual I would recommend this to anyone who has read Replacement and enjoyed it even mildly. If you haven't, definitely give book one a shot first. If you like or don't mind a Young Adult feel to your sci-fi mysteries, you should have a good time with this series.
OMG. What a crazy creative story this was. So much action with clones, non- clones, tech companies. Action packed all the way. Jane meets one more of her batch mates and we follow her quest to find her sponsors. Such an incredible rollercoaster ride. I can’t wait for the next book but I suppose I’ll have to.
The core of the storyline is intriguing. Who sponsored the creation of the protagonist and her clone batchmates? However, I am disappointed in this novel because it feels more distant than immediate, as though the narrative voice is telling about events as though they happened years ago, such as for the publication of a memoir, as opposed to immersing the reader in the events as they unfold. There are some very vivid sensory details that help create immediacy, but too often events are summarized instead of “lived” moment by moment.
The secondary character, Dean, is likable, but what does he see in the protagonist that sets her apart and makes her more attractive? Most of the time she seems insecure about herself in comparison to others, is flying by the seat of her pants, and is stubborn.
This second installment has more danger, some betrayal, and more loose ends than mysteries solved.
For the third book, the protagonist will be placing her life at risk, again, without much of a plan or back up. I’m not sure I’m still on board with her and her obsession.
This second book ends at the 97% point. There are scenes of destruction and death, some terrorist-style attacks, and thematic issues relating to human rights.
Right off, the protagonist is thrown into the middle of the action in this well-plotted futuristic mystery. Rivet has built a strong storyline continuing from her first book "Replacement". While Jane is off to college, she's still determined to learn more about the rest of her clone batch. When she encounters Janette, another of her batch, she's excited to perhaps bond with her batchmate. But it doesn't go the way she hoped.
With unexpected twists and revelations, this book kept me reading long after I should have gone to bed. I really loved the way it developed and the tension in it. This is a great book for any mystery fan, and it presents some thoughtful situations about cloning. I received an ARC copy for my honest review, and this is it. It's an intriguing, well-written mystery. Well worth reading.
Rivet has done a fantastic job improving on the things they fell short on in the first installment of this series. In the second book, we get closer to the truth of Jane's origins and meet another one of her batchmates, and I have to say I was sufficiently surprised by the reveal at the end, even though I should have seen it coming a mile away. I really like how Rivet has you step into Jane's shoes with her relatable narration; you end up overlooking the same things that Jane does, and hoping for the same things she does as well. It's a good author that can sink you into the character of their protagonist to the point you're having the same reactions, and I'm very pleased with Rivet for being able to do it so well.
On to the next book -- I can't wait to see what's in store!
This was a fast read. While it started off slow, it picked up and I was never bored, but.....the characters disappointed me. Jane was too trusting with the wrong people, Dean is too controlled, Janette was in too deep, and even though I didnt like how Jane was treating Isaac, he kind of proved her right. He did seem into any Janie and too attached to his dad to do the right thing. It was all so frustrating on top of the strong issues of prejudice. But the schemes, double crossing, corporate espionage, attacks, and plotting was really good! As usual, Jordan Rivet kept me on my toes. The ending gives me hope, and I'm looking forward to ending since I loved book one so much and this book set up nicely for a show down in the next one 😄
Kindle unlimited to rescue for the rest of the series! Jane off to college, no family to send her off, meeting Isaac there Starts off with a bang Dorm bot welcomed her as Janine(she’s Jane or Janie) and she had seen a girl she thought might be a batchmate * Roommate Veronica has a anti clone industrial complex group Independent nation of Texas Time honored tradition of wearing pajama pants to class More bangs/explosions *Janette implant works and Jane learns some distressing news from the transcript of latest recording to be uploaded to her handler, who turns out to be a surprise as well Still in quest to find her sponsor
Batchmate is the second installment in Jordan Rivet's Lost Clone series. Again, we follow Jane as she dives even deeper into the mystery surrounding her origins. Thrilled to run into another batchmate at college, Jane soon suffers great disappointment when it doesn't turn out the way she was hoping. Not to be deterred, Jane keeps digging for answers. Yet, how far do you go when your life is on the line?
Overall, a good read. I can't wait for the next one so we can get some answers for Jane.
I continued to enjoy the series in this book. Things are getting rocky for our two besties, and people are getting betrayed all around. We got to explore more of the world the characters inhabit.
I find it interesting to see how the members of various batches of clones can still end up with variations in personality, and have different goals from each others in their batch.
My read ended just before the release of book three (At least I hope it’ll be out in my region shortly), which is good timing!
I think this is a fun, creative continuation of the first book. I like how the subject matter is topical (though futuristic) and I like the significance of family connections. I think my students will also like this story. And though I appreciate that the ending of this book will make me pick up the third in the series, cliffhangers like these are a pet peeve of mine. 🙃 Note: I really like the narrator. She fits the story well.
Jane is back and still looking for answers. But things stall and off she goes to college and ends up finding a lead in a new clone. But of course there is trouble, secrets, intrigue, surprises and twists abound. loved it and was glued to the end to see what Jane finds and figures out this time.
Cliffhanger. Advertised as book 2 of 2. Yet it is incomplete and goes on to more books.
Don't waste your time. I never read a series until it is complete. This series was supposed to be 2 books. However, it is more than two. So it ends with a cliffhanger. Pass on it.
Now the story is getting more interesting as Jane uncovered more secrets as she searches for answers about her sponsor and five other batchmates The stakes are rising though and getting more dangerous
I'm HOOKED. Things escalated in the best ways, characters grew and changed, the worldbuilding expanded, the plot twists took me along for the ride. I'm loving this series and I'm ready to follow Jane all the way through. I can't wait to see what happens next!
