From the pages of Witchblade: Danielle Baptiste returns home to New Orleans to come to grips with her new role as the Angelus, the human bearer of the primal force of Light. To complicate matters she must sort out her undefined relationship with Finch while maintaining control of the Angelus host, some of whom covet her power.
Marz is well known for his work on Silver Surfer and Green Lantern, as well as the Marvel vs DC crossover and Batman/Aliens. He also worked on the CrossGen Comics series Scion, Mystic, Sojourn, and The Path. At Dark Horse Comics he created Samurai: Heaven and Earth and various Star Wars comics. He has also done work for Devil’s Due Publishing’s Aftermath line, namely Blade of Kumori. In 1995, he had a brief run on XO-Manowar, for Valiant Comics.
Marz’s more recent works includes a number of Top Cow books including Witchblade and a Cyberforce relaunch. For DC Comics, he has written Ion, a 12 part comic book miniseries that followed the Kyle Rayner character after the One Year Later event, and Tales of the Sinistro Corps Presents: Parallax and Tales of the Sinestro Corps Presents: Ion, two one-shot tie-ins to the Green Lantern crossover, The Sinestro Corps War.
His current creator owned projects include “Dragon Prince” (Top Cow) and “Samurai : Heaven and Earth” (Dark Horse).
The Angelus mini-series by Ron Marz and Stjepan Sejic is a truly masterpiece, not only the impressive art made of Sejic but also the entertained and well crafted story by Marz. I believe that this is one of their best works together if not the best. I already read many good work of them like in First Born and Witchblade, but this mini-series has striking characters, ingenious dialogues, awesome action sequences and breathtaking paintings. Also the tone of the book is totally oriented to adult readers and the characters definitely have a lot of layers on their personalities. One of the most recommended comic book miniseries that I can think of right now from a independent publishing house out of the big ones like DC and Marvel. Indeed Top Cow must be proud of having this title on its own.
Strong Female Lead: Check Beautiful Graphic Art: Check Lesbian Love Interest: Check Complex Storyline: Check Comprehending of Complex Storyline: ...
I love that this series seemed started off incorporating this love interest that isn't represented a lot as just an integral part of the story Danielle Baptiste gets her own comic line as she wields a force called "Light." It's sort of journey navigating her relationship with her lover and her power.
The part that was like..."this could've been sooo gooood" was that I'm still lost on the whole "Angelus" concept, I was doing a whole lot of extra wiki-ing that I'm like...man do I need to read that much of Witchblade to have a concept of what's going on. I actually felt for Finch because I was just like her..."Stop leaving me behind, Danielle!" I'm just not sure i'm ready to take on this beast of a world...yet
Mystifying storyline; too bad if you'd like to know why any of this is happening, including the apparently recent onslaught of titillating sexuality, but there are superpowers, chicks with wings and naked lesbian sex so I'm sure we can rule out cynical marketing motives. The artwork, in the individual illustrations, is high quality - less so in storytelling - and deserves a, reluctant, extra star. Effectively free thankfully, thanks to humble bundle ; I guess I'm not the target audience.
Beautiful illustrations! And I love the main character being a strong woman who is figuring out her sexuality and her relationship with another woman. But the storyline just didn't draw me in like I thought it would.
The artwork in this is sinply stunning, incredibly detailed and colourful. The story is a little confusing without prior information but it makes sense and is cohesive.
As someone new to reading comics, I don't know much about the Witchblade universe. I love Stjepan Sejic's work on deviantArt and decided to give Angelus a try. I'm really happy I did. As I've come to expect of Sejic, the artwork is lovely, capturing characters' expressions in ways that show their personality, and similarly for the environments. The story is interesting and easy enough to understand without knowing characters' histories. Knowing what happened previously would be nice, but isn't necessary to enjoy the story and character interactions. What impresses me most is how Marz and Sejic show the developing relationship between Dani and Finch authentically and naturally, respecting both characters and their situations. You should definitely buy this!
the story itself is interesting enough, and has a touch of the complex ambiguity to it, but it's the art that really shines; stunning, complex, having more than a touch of the magical to it....but having said that these overtly digital paintings are not as good nor as artistically credible as they think they are, the proportions are just that bit off, and the characters are drawn for exaggerated beauty rather than realism, this said, it is still wonderfully grotesque and arabesque, without being overtly gothic or cliched.
A great trade paperback side story to the Witchblade series. It has a strong female character, fantastic illustrations, interesting interactions between the characters, and the pace of the story is lovely. Due to some of the content this is a paperback for a more mature reader, but otherwise this is a great read that I recommend whenever it comes up.
Stjepan Sejic creates some of his most beautiful artwork in this series, and Ron Marz is excellent in telling the tale of the power forever fighting The Darkness. This trade is a good place to start if you're wanting to get into the Top Cow Universe and the Artifacts storyline specifically.
A good first outing for the standalone Angelus title. Dani has to face the reality of her new place in the ancient struggle with the Darkness, and contend with forces within her own camp who are less than pleased with her ascent. Sejik's art continues to shine.
