It's Fantastic, Fantabulous, Awesome!!

I am at a loss for words, unable to adequately express my emotions towards this story. Isabelle has truly exceeded my expectations. I don't mean to boast, but I must admit that it held my attention just as much as the Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling. While the story may not bear any resemblance, it possesses the same captivating charm that makes it impossible to put the book down for even a moment.

Now, let's delve into the story itself—the secrets, the twists—it was simply incredible and outstanding. Each character was intricately portrayed, and I particularly enjoyed witnessing Hira's transformation. It was remarkably well-executed. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I was genuinely taken aback when she was injured and the witch attempted to heal her. I couldn't believe what I was reading. Isabelle is truly the queen of fantasy and imagination.

The revelation about Commander Justan was masterfully crafted, catching me completely off guard.

There is one aspect that didn't particularly bother me, but I believe could be enhanced a little. I understand that this is a feminist book, and Queen Almira is undeniably remarkable. However, I found the character of Alton to be somewhat weak in comparison to Almira. I would love to see more of him as a powerful, badass character who can match Almira's strength and compatibility.

I struggle to find the words to express my thoughts further.

I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the third book. Please make it available soon.

Thank you to the author to send me an ARC against an honest review.

The Lady of Istok is the second installment of the "The Queen's Red Guard" fantasy series (read the 1st installment). It follows the adventures of Hira, as well as Almira's. It's a great book and it was a solid 4 star read for me. The romance was lovely to read and, as always, the writing is really good. I wasn't expecting THAT plot twist!

The only reason why I didn't rate it 5 stars is because I felt like the pace was a bit too fast for me in certain parts of the book. But again, this is a solid 4 star read.

3rd book, here I come soon :)

In the captivating sequel to this remarkable series (please go read it immediately), readers continue to be immersed in an intricately woven tapestry of dark political fantasy that surrounds wonderful characters who have satisfying arcs and growth.

The sequel follows the young Hira, who previously fled from her country to seek her own happiness and who undergoes a truly transformative journey. The author's prowess in crafting multifaceted and resilient characters is awe-inspiring; she seriously tortures them and they always stand back up to fight another day in an inspiring way. From the primary protagonist to the ensemble of supporting figures, each one is imbued with complexity and depth; none of them are perfect and they feel incredibly real. Even the antagonists, though occasionally veering towards a somewhat melodramatic portrayal, possess a magnetic quality that adds to the story's allure. I hope that future installments delve further into the villains' psyches, offering more nuanced perspectives into their characters. Especially the ones in this book.

I was deeply emotionally invested and the moments that tugged at my heartstrings were plentiful throughout the book. However, it was the conclusion that delivered an emotional coup de grâce, leaving me profoundly affected and clamoring for the forthcoming novel. A tantalizing hint of the next narrative's focus has ignited my fervent anticipation, as I have long yearned for a deeper exploration of the character in question.

This sequel, much like its predecessor, occasionally meanders and stretches the narrative's length and there were instances where the pace seemed to languish. I also did not understand the necessity of the magic, given that it never really gained importance in the plot. However, the multitude of positive aspects eclipses any minor faults I might have had.

This book is an extraordinary work that delves into the recesses of those who rule and have remarkable heroines. I wholeheartedly love these books and eagerly await the next.

I received an eARC of this and am leaving a review voluntarily. These are my own opinions.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat. Isabelle weaves a very complicated story with a diverse cast of characters and underlying discussions on feminism, social status, and societal issues. I would pay attention to the content guidance the author has provided.

I was not prepared for the twists and turns this book took me through. There were many points where I had planned on finishing a chapter and then kept reading two or three more. I got to chapter 21 and was literally yelling at my phone so much that my kids came to check on me.

If you like high seas adventure, slowburn romance, political machinations, a FMC who can hold her own but still has some growing up to do, and a MMC with a lot of secrets then this is the book for you. There is some magic but it is on the lighter end of the fantasy spectrum.

We still get to see Queen Almira's POV as she deals with her husband away at war. We also finally get Hira's POV as she returns to her lands to take up a mantle of leadership. Then we meet Justan, the commander of the armada whose first meeting with Hira is one that will forever be ingrained in my mind. We also get to see Sanaa's POV as she leads the Queen's Red Guard.

I'll have to re-read both the books in this series as I am sure there are things I missed. The world that Isabelle builds is amazingly complex but I never felt like we were getting an info dump. This is a must read and for me a must buy for my bookshelf!

If you're a fan of the popular fantasy romance series (you know the ones) but haven't started this series...what are we doing?

No fae males with impressive wingspans but it does have dragons 😉
_______________________________________

Lady of Istok picks up right where Queen and Conqueror ended. Hira is forced to take on the responsibilities she thought she could run from. She's pissed and she's grieving. Grieving for the people who lost their lives, and for losing the life she wanted before it could even begin.

And sailing back to Istok with the infuriating Captain Seavers is not making things better.

We not only follow Hira's story line but also we have the Queen Almira and Captain Sanaa POV's that keep the political plotline going. The world opens up even more, new characters are introduced, and secrets and lies are revealed keeping the readers glued to the pages.

But, when I tell you Hira went through it. I mean, the woman 👏🏻 went 👏🏻 through 👏🏻 it!

The last 30% or so of this book was intense, I mean omfg, you'll want the next book immediately but it's not releasing until later this year 😭😭😭😭

The leading women in this ongoing story are fierce and amazing and take no shit, the leading men are equally amazing... frustrating, but you can't help but love them.

Read this if you like: epic fantasy, fantasy romance, Game of Thrones but make it all feminist, secret identity, reluctant royals, sea voyages, sword fights

OMG that effing cliffhanger. I’m so glad I waited until book three was out. Completely gutted and cannot take a break - I NEED to know what’s going to happen!

While the first book in the series, “Queen and Conqueror” followed primarily Queen Almira, “Lady of Istok” primarily follows Hira’s growth and development. With that, it is a multi-POV book and you will continue Almira, Alton, Sanaa, and the rest of the Red Guard stories. “Lady of Istok” picks up where “Queen and Conqueror” left off, with Hira having to leave the Queen’s Red Guard and the life she has chosen to fulfill her duties as the Lady of Istok. However, Hira’s predecessor has left Hira and Almira with new enemies, and the fate of New Verden hanging in the balance. Hira’s development and growth throughout the story is realistically written staying true to who she is but also recognizes who she needs to be and the struggle in that process. I believe readers will find Hira’s growth is and struggles to find her footing in that growth very relatable.

The Queen’s Red Guard has quickly become a favorite series and I am already excited to reread the first two books, as the rest are released, so pick up on the hints and anything I may have missed! The entire series can be described as feminist epic fantasy with some romance. I do recommend this series for all fantasy readers and romantasy readers!

Omg that ending, my heart. There were so many twists and revelations that I couldn't see coming. I need book 3 like yesterday.

From the first chapter I knew it was going to be another 5 star read. Isabelle's writing just absorbs into her books no matter the length ( this one is longer than Queen and Conqueror and so worth it.) I love hearing about pregnant Almira and Alton. They're the perfect definition of married life and I just love it.

This book is more focused on Hira, Almira's cousin and she is just as fiery as Almira in her own way. This book is a lot about Hira coming to terms with being the Lady of Istok and finding that she always possessed the skills to protect her people and what's better than a lady that actually has swordsmanship and can handle herself in a pirate battle.

You read that right. There are pirates, dragons, witches, romance, everything you loved in Queen and Conqueror and more.
Omg Hira has gone through so much growth since we met her in Queen and Conqueror. I love that she realized how strong she is and why everyone saw her fit.

The Lady of Istok Hira must return to her rightful place before Istok gets invaded by its enemies. While the destiny is cruel and danger is lingering on both Lady of Istok and Istok. While Queen Almira is pregnant and as soon as the letter arrives, Almira travels with her Red guards and women warriors but will it be too late before they could save the lady and Istok? Will they arrive on time? What if they will get caught in the trap, will they find their way out?

The book has magic, old tale woven in the plot, prognosis, war, dragons, conspiracy, pirates and secrets are deeper as well as they are the backbone of the story. This is an epic historical fantasy with a mild romance, ancient tale and magic. It was such a rollercoaster ride with heart-aching twists. I got a slight hint of the author’s next book. It also has a vibe like GOT.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. A great sequel to Queen and Conqueror. It is filled with female badassery, adventure, and unexpected twists. The author did not disappoint and continues to create an amazing world with epic characters that will bring out all your emotions. If you are a sucker for enemies to lovers, fantasy, political intrigue, and just straight-up female bad ass characters you need to grab this series. Eagerly awaiting the next book.

i like the blend of fantasy and romance in this series but i didn't like either of the main characters of this one and i kept waiting for the switch in pov to get back to my faves. even the characters from the first book felt a bit off in this one and now i'm skeptical about reading the third one because sanaa is my fave and i don't want to see her character be ruined for me.

Fantastic read!! I lead a high stress and chaotic life, which makes spare time precious and often far and few in between. Due to this I choose books that capture my attention and imagination and allow me to escape my hectic life within the pages/stories. This book accomplished that!! I was privileged to receive an ARC (in exchange for a completely honest review of the book) and I devoured the story! I love books with strong FMC, especially when the FMC experiences self doubt, but doesn’t let that stop her from doing what needs to be done. Many strong women experience self doubt, which only makes the ability to overcome difficult challenges that much more impressive. This book had most of my favorite tropes: enemies to lovers, lust at first sight, close proximity, and twists I didn’t see coming throughout the whole book!! I can’t wait for the next installment!

The story of Almira, Sanaa, and Hira continues in "Lady of Istok", an intriguing sequel to "Queen and Conqueror". It has been several months since the events of Arrigo's failed coup and a heavily-pregnant Almira must send her cousin, Hira, back to Istok as High Lady to fill the void power left when her father died. This very fate was the same Hira hoped to escape a year ago when she took up the mantle of Red Guard; one, it seems, she'll never escape or be welcomed to. Aboard the Istokian armada, Hira clashes with her Commander, a man with kind eyes and hateful tone, that undermines her in the same breath he defends her. Her homeward journey won't be easy, but growth has never promised ease or simplicity.

While Almira brokers peace from the political games played in her War-room, Sanaa contends with the loss of half her original Guard. The training of the youth is draining, especially when the Queen threatens to drive the Captain to madness. Only when a ghost of the past emerges from the shadows does Sanaa realize the games played are taking on a complexity she nor her Queen can outmaneuver.

Peace is not given; it seems it is only earned through death. But how can death be the answer when the dead only whisper of war through the grief of the living? Will the world ever know it?

The wonder of the first tale of New Verden is not lost on the sequel novel. In fact, Olmo's characters grow in ways that make them so frighteningly real that you feel for them at a depth you cannot describe. Their world is riddled with conflict, and while it implores you to turn the page you will learn to dread it all the same. Because secrets are unfolding, plots are thickening, and blood may run heavily into the sea if our friends are not careful.

Warnings: This novel did explore multiple themes of abuse, (mentioned) suicide, violence, (mentioned) sexual abuse, homophobia, and death. Olmo did not disregard the gravity of such subjects and handled those particular scenes in ways that were not gratuitous or unnecessary.

If you have not begun the story of the Queen's Red Guard, this is your sign to. Olmo has created a world so immense that you will fall into it as though transported there to live amongst characters you'll grow to love. This is the fourth tale to be told of the world, with more promising to arrive by the time you catch on. For those continuing, prepare to set sail; the water swells higher than it ever has on this adventure. And it is aided by an ending sure to make you scream, cry, and seek out the next book. New Verden teeters at the very edge of war and we must all play our part if fate is to grant us any hope at all.

"She would harden her heart like a rock and carry it like armor. They could mangle her body, but never her heart."

Thank you to Brey’s Book Tours and Isabelle Olmo for providing me with a digital copy of this book. This is my honest review.
-
I have been waiting to yell about my love for this book ever since I beta read it months ago! And then the time came and I struggled to pummel all my love and emotions into a review that was both passionate and coherent 💀 So here goes! Try 352! Let’s go with short and sweet 😂
-
I thought book one in the series was amazing, but Lady of Istok completely blew me out of the water. I haven’t had such a visceral reaction to a book in a while. I swooned and I laughed and I theorized and I sobbed so hard into my pillow in the dead of night 😭 Isabelle quite literally ripped my heart out of my chest and stomped on it and I thanked her for it. After flooding her DMs with incoherent yelling that is 😂 There were so many ups and downs and I enjoyed every single one of them.
-
I love this world. I love these characters. I love these women who take zero shit from anyone and wear their ferocity on their sleeve. I’ve had the privilege of visiting them twice so far and each time has been an absolute journey. Isabelle excels at writing immersive epic fantasy with characters that worm their way into every corner of your heart. They are flawed and they are raw and they are so, so real.
-
Isabelle’s writing is such a lovely blend of prose and poetry. I’m throwing favorite quotes at her right and left 😂 And the plot is so well-executed! There are layers upon layers of plotting coming to fruition and I love seeing everything unravel.
-
When I say that this is one of my favorite series of all time, I can say it with full confidence. I can’t wait to see where Isabelle takes us next. I’m locked into this series for the long haul. If you’re looking for a fantasy series that will rock your fucking socks, please pick up the Queen’s Red Guard! I promise you won’t regret it.

First, I am so appreciative that I got the opportunity to read an ARC of this. I will scream from the roof tops how INCREDIBLY VITAL it is you read this book.

Enemies to lovers, forced proximity, multi POV, pining, POWER 100% recommend.

Isabelle truly knows how to create such full characters. I cannot remember a series prior to this where I legitimately cared for most every person we meet in the story. I get emotional seeing women represented so fully. Their friendships, flaws, love, softness, strength. Ugh perfection. And the diversity in her stories doesn’t feel forced or token like so many other fantasy novels.

I have been blown away by both books. Hira is such a validating character. She’s emotional, so strong, determined, resilient. While Almira starts off as a dragon, Hira grows into one. And it’s a whole ass amazing journey.

YES IF: you want female representation, growth, a strong FMC, adventure.

Sparked joy in reading again. I grew up being an avid reader but as an adult it isn't always the easiest thing to fit into my schedule. Then the book gods/goddesses placed Isabelle Olmo into my TikTok feed and joy has once again returned into my life. I cannot speak highly enough of this book, this series, this AUTHOR. She leaves nothing to be desired except the next book. I am fully riveted by Ms Olmo's world and am so glad she has several more in the swires planned. This book is just amazing and it will leave you on the edge of your seat. I am predicting that this will be a series of movies one day. Go read the first book and preorder this one. You will not be disappointed.

Holy. Shit.

It has been a hot minute since I've stayed up until the wee hours with a book I couldn't put down, but here we are. I can not find the words to describe how much I loved and hated this story. It made me feel the same way I did reading Kingdom of Ash, except this isn't the last book of the series and there is no happy ending. The anxiety, the fear, the omg are you fucking stupid, the hope and then just the absolute gut wrenching pain at the ending. I love you, Isabelle, I hate you, I need more.

"The lies we tell to protect ourselves are the most important lies we ever tell"

This is the second book in The Queen's Red Guard series. In this, we are following Hira's journey back to Istok on The Sea Wife to reclaim her position. Unknown to her, there is a lot going on in Istok and her life is in danger. At times when she is always second guessing herself, she cannot help but cross wits with the ship's commander Justan. In this book we majorly follow Hira on her journey to Istok and facing the dangers.

Plot & the world : The direction the plot took was unexpected. I anticipated that this book would mostly center on Justan, the ship's commander, and Hira's relationship, but it was much more than that; it was full of twists and turns, and I appreciated the emphasis on Hira's growth as a stronger character.
The cliffhanger ending is one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever read. I cannot wait to get my hands on book 3.
The setting is the same as in book one, but this book introduces us to a few other customs and traditions that are unique to Istok.
Additionally, this book has multiple POVs so we get to read other characters' struggles as well.

Characters : Hira's character arc is amazing. I enjoyed watching the turn of an unsure rebel into a responsible, strong, and badass lady. I loved when she was put in her place for being childish and selfish.
The majority of the characters are the same as in book one; out of the new ones, Kaia and Quent were my favorites. Quent's innocence melted my heart, and Kaia's uncertainty caught me off guard, and I couldn't help but root for them to find their own place in this ruthless world.

Things that did not go well for me : The only time I wasn't fully engaged in the story was when Strauss was being chased; it was a necessary detour, but I thought the author might have made it shorter. Additionally, throughout, I was hoping for a little more chemistry between Justan and Hira. Although the scenes were there, I was not able to fully connect except when it all came to a conclusion in the last.

I received an ARC of this book, in return of an honest review.

Title: Lady of Istok
Author: Isabelle Olmo
Series: The Queen’s Red Guard #2
Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆

Isabelle Olmo has cemented herself as one of my all time favorite female authors with her quick wit, the ferocious love she has for bad ass heroines who get to be the hero in every book, and because she's hands down one of the absolute sweetest authors I've had the honor of knowing. She is a shining light for all women, young and old, who desperately need someone to look up to and to remind us that we are all badass women and we are more than capable of saving ourselves. Olmo is an unapologetical feminist who is all about girl power and her stories have forever been embedded in my heart & soul.

Lady of Istok follows Hira as she leaves her cousin, Queen Almira and the red guard to head back to Istok to rule Istok and Istokian people. Hira never wanted to be a ruler.  She wants to remain in the red guard and protect her cousin, but unfortunately Hira doesn't have much say in what she's to do. She has to follow what her cousin tells her to so Hira boards a ship, The Sea Wife to start her journey back to Istok, what she doesn't plan for is Commander Justan and his attitude towards her. Only reminding Hira that the journey back home will not be a easy. She will face obstacles and complications at every turn which might kill her or will make her rise to her rightful place and in turn causing her to rise to the challenge and take her place as ruler of the Istokian people.

Lady of Istok is action packed from beginning to end. This adult feminist fantasy series is hands down one of my all time favorites. The females in this series are badass, strong, they love and fight fiercely, loyal to a fault, and they command but demand respect. Isabelle Olmo wrote a fantastic book filled with pirates, queens, commander's, betrayal, revenge, love, loss and so much more. Make sure if you start this book, you have time to finish it because you won't want to put it down. I recommend this series 1000x times over!

Another AMAZING book in the Red Guard series!

I knew I would love this one, as I adore Queen and Conqueror, but I failed to predict how much darker, grittier, and stunning Lady of Istok would be.

The prose is beautiful, the characters human, the plot thrilling, the settings vivid, the intrigue top-tear, the romance heart-breaking, everything thing you can think of that makes a book great --- this one has it.

Hira is an amazing MC, and her arc was one of the best things I´ve read so far. We watch her grow into the Dragon we always knew she could become, and each step of the way is incredible. I LOVE the magic in this book, the lore, and the mythical aspects of the story. Chap 21 almost killed me, and I´m so glad it did. It was amazing, honestly.

The romance was beautiful too, the push and pull between her and the love interest stunning: swoon-worthy and brilliantly written. I can´t say much more about the topic without spoilers, so suffice it to say I´m in absolute awe of Olmo's craftmanship.

And the twist. Oh, I never saw that coming, and I am very good at predicting plot twists (a weird flex, I know, but it's true). When the revelation came it blew my mind, not something that happens every day. BRILLIANT!

And then --- and then! --- when you think you are safe as we approach the end of the book... BOOM another twist, another trial, one that won´t be solved until the next books in the series come out.

At the end, I was like: WHY, Olmo, WHY must you do that to us?
And the answer is, because we LOVE IT.

This is a huge book, and I devoured it.

And I stand by my last review of the series, this is the best high/epic fantasy I have ever read. If you like Game of Thrones but are tired of old men ruling the fantasy worlds, READ THIS SERIES!

IT´S AMAZING!!!!!

A thousand stars for Lady of Istok.

The Lady of Istok continues the story that was started with Almira in the Queen and Conqueror. In this story we are following Hira, the young, stubborn, and defiant girl that is now headed back to her home of Istok to become the High Lady. A position she does not want and has been running away from. We are also introduced to new characters and Hira's commander of her Armada Justan.

This book had a flow and prose that was beautiful and pulled the reader in immediately. My only criticism is that unlike the first, the pacing had areas that seemed to drag or be drawn out unnecessarily. The authors ability to create tension between the two main characters in the eventual romance was done well, however, at times the back and forth became redundant through the middle of the book until the climactic ending began. The political intrigue well done with twists and turns that were unexpected, and the action was tense and edge of your seat, with some banter to make it fun. This book definitely had some twists that I did not see coming and left me wanting more.

The author was able to take the reader through all the emotions and immerse you in a world that you never want to leave. The characters were dynamic and multi-faceted, and you wanted to learn more and stay with them as you rooted for them in their trials, tribulations, and happiness. The characters that were carried from the first book grew and changed, making them even more interesting. They moved and grew emotionally and mentally with the times and had the scars to prove it. I cannot wait to read the final installment and find out how it all comes together for these characters I have come to love.

Thank you to Book sirens and the author and publisher for a digital copy of this book to review. I leave this review voluntarily.

“A ruler that doesn’t have people to question them quickly becomes a tyrant. That is not your path,
A dragon cannot be a dragon if it is not thrown into the sea to learn how to swim."

“Men will never be ready for women like us, and it is not our job to ready them.”

"We’re sea dragons, born from the same ocean pool."

“A dragon cannot be a dragon if it is not thrown into the sea to learn how to swim."

"She was a vivid painting, a masterpiece etched in honor and pain. He was the underserving bastard that held her love and he would never discard it again."

"Not all those who hold back tears are happy. Sometimes sadness is so dire and deep that tears are inadequate."

"The world didn’t offer flowers to those who’d not earned them. And so far, she’d done nothing to earn it."

“The lies we tell to protect ourselves are the most important lies we ever tell.”

Excuse me while I quote dumped all over your faces, but I couldn't get enough of them in these two gorgeous beauties!

These books are full of badass female characters, who know how to survive the brutal world of men! The first book had alot of world building and character development, and the 2nd book was the story getting even better with even more lovable characters!

My only issue.... WHERE ARE ALL THE DRAGONS? The word "Dragon" is mentioned 196 times total (kindle told me! I don't count that high!) in these books and I'm sorry to say... don't get your hopes up on that one, the dragons are sorely lacking! Other than that this is a great Fantasy series that is available on Kindle Unlimited! SO GO CHECK IT OUT! Thank you @breysbooktours @isabelleolmobooks for sharing these wonderful books with me!

I give Queen & Conquerer and Lady Of Istok in the Queens Red Guard series by Isabelle Olmo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
