Every Jessica Anderson mystery I read, I learn more of the fascinating ways dogs are trained for search and rescue work. In this volume, we see the concept of running an 'op' in the military sense can be trained for dogs. The idea of "you do this, you do that, and I'll do the other" when the leader of the op is a highly intelligent dog seems to be obvious. I've seen dogs do brilliant, impossible things so it's not hard to believe they can follow a dog leader smart enough to understand each member of the pack's special abilities and to direct them to subtasks.

Maybe this is pushing it a bit, but the really neat thing about these books is that the reader can easily believe that with the right training, anything is possible.

Beyond the fascinating description of how the dogs operate under Jessica's command, this is just a damned good read. As are all the others in the series.

If you have any interest in this fascinating area of working dogs, you absolutely should read the entire series.

Good job!!

I chose this rating because I stayed up late to finish it, something I haven't done in years! I enjoy the no-sex plot scenes, the personal growth of both hero and heroine. I related to the learning of how to respond/respect each other of most of the characters. The setting resonates with reality. Looking forward to the next installation. Thank you, Dawn.

Favorite

I read many books about female handlers and dogs but these are my favorite. Partnered myself with a service dog I know the deep communication that goes on. I also like the fact that we can have a deep thriller with both men and women without the need for constant sexual tension. Waiting for the next one.

Having been concerned with what seemed to be happening with the two main characters (Jessie & Landon) in book four, I debated about continuing this series. Jessie and Landon seemed stuck in pretty negative places - not surprising due to the pretty drastic events in the story. I did not want to be dragged down with them. I gave in. In my defense, Ms. Keur writes in a strong voice with tough plots, great action particularly with the SAR and HRD dogs, real characters and thoroughly rugged settings in Idaho. I obviously did not resist the read and so glad I held my breath and dove in. No synopsis or spoilers here. Ms. Keur creates multiple events surrounding: the ever evolving roles and pressures of good law enforcement, female abductions, multiple rescues throughout a busy summer in the BitterRoots, and Jessie and Landon carefully and purposefully each working to recover and confirm who they are individually. Ms. Keur treats all the above with intelligence and sensitivity. And some of the secondary characters could have their own books, too. BTW: could be triggers for some readers regarding violence toward women.

Captivating; Cannot wait for the next book in the series.

This is a series you need to make sure you read in order. Love that there are no fatalies with the dogs and gory details are kept to minimum and that for once no reference to covid 19 is left out. Yes, these factors may not gel with those who want more rsex and violence, written details about the violent and troubled times we live in, politically correct acceptable referencing, but for those who want to read to escape and is a lover of animals, the people who love these animals and work in the field of SAR, HRD, small rural law enforcement, its perfect. K. L Keur style tells the story without writing pages on the minute details that some do on the violent acts perpetrated. Does not need it. Characters are well developed and through the story slowly being revealed and developing. These books are for those readers looking for suspense, a little mystery, strong independent but flawed female heros and overall a story about people in rural America their values, traditional beliefs and striving to balance it with the ugliness of life in the modern world trying to change them. Must read.

Five Stars for book 5 - highly recommend

The character development just gets better and better!
As I read along - following Landon’s struggles and Jesse’s research to understand and help, I found information that helped me in my daily life dealing with real people and real issues. This insight and understanding has caused me to become better at what I do - and that is a wonderful thing.
I believe the author - Keur - does careful research and seems to have real life experience in some of the situations she writes about. There is an authenticity to her descriptions and dialogues that is undeniable and richly rewarding to read.
Anytime I find an author whose writing enriches my own reality - my own daily life - one whose storytelling gives me a better understanding and outlook on my own real life situations - I hang on to those writers as solid gold. Because they are.
I highly recommend all of the Jessica Anderson K-9 Mysteries that I have so far read - and I don’t believe I will be disappointed in any of those still awaiting me.

My new favorite author

Upon finishing Book 5, DL Keur has now cemented herself in the position of being the author whose books I most eagerly await. She writes well, can write a plot and develop characters, keeps the pace from lagging. I love dogs and am enamoured with SAR work; might have done it when I was younger had I but known about it. I love her characters and the personalities of each of the dogs, the way they work together. She has them hunting in a pack, which seems only natural. Is it any wonder I mark the book's debut on my calendar and wait until midnight to be able to download it immediately? Thank you, Ms. Keur, for the wonderful contribution to the field! I eagerly await the next installment.

Jessica, dog trainer, is under attack. Landon thinks he is going crazy. together they are finding to many bodies.

Jessica the dog trainer for SAR has been attacked. Landon is furious that he couldn’t do more to protect her. He is still healing from the brain injury and thinks he is going crazy because he remembers something that doesn’t show in the records. The two are being threatened by the man who attacked Jessica. Then they find to many bodies. They don’t belong to missing locals so they have to find out who is doing this. But they do have local women missing and the think they are still alive so where are they? This story has so many twists you are constantly on alert

A darker K-9 mystery

This one has much darker than the other ones. Unfortunately, I can absolutely see a great deal of this actually happening, especially the part at the end. There are a bunch of people that think some very strange things because they're able to get together via the Internet and they reinforce each other's bizarre beliefs. Unfortunately, some of them commit crimes because of these beliefs. On one hand, the internet has allowed people to do all sorts of things they wouldn't have been able to do. On the other hand, the internet a tool, and like any tool can be used to the wrong way. As usual, the book was tightly plotted, it had fascinating characters, and the insights in the book were very interesting. I will definitely read the next book in the series.

Love the dogs in this series

Great dogs doing heroic things in this series. Jessica has a unique training style and this is so interesting and the creative ways that the dogs are used in the books is fantastic. I was bothered by one sentence in the book referring to Jessica’s brother and possibly being transgender, I hope that this loving family in this series hasn’t put out their son for being who he is. The transgender community has taken such abuse and for trying to quietly live their lives as best they can and it is so hard what they do to feel right about themselves. I would not support these books if there wasn’t support for all of God’s creatures including the transgender community.

Great series

A really good read with characters that continue to develop as the series progresses and dogs, wonderful dogs, cats and horses. A tiny kitten going missing had a hardwood floor being torn up and that I well understand as we have pulled things to pieces looking for a kitten who just suddenly appeared in the hall way coming to see what the noise was and what we were doing. The relief that he was ok was immense. Thank you for the wonderful world you are creating, for believable characters and of course for the animals that bring it to life. Looking forward to the next book in the series and beyond.

Better with each book!

Each book of this series, that I have read, gets better, more extreme and more nail biting! This one has a very frightening and fearsome story line. Though it only involves Bitterroot county, it’s representative of the terrible things that happen in our world now. But she has a way of informing us without too many gruesome details. The basic storyline is still about the heroine and her extended family, especially the dogs. I recommend this book highly, but you should be prepared to commit your time to reading it in very few sittings- it’s that compelling!

I will have to read EVERYTHING BY THIS AUTHORESS!

Articulate intelligent heroines who will save everyone, even the hero are hard to come by.
The incredible world of canines & humans bonding to stop evil and protect the lost and their training & developing together should be more acknowledged supported & understood.
The knowledge of evil is frightening.
The knowledge that we do not have to be alone, in good or the very bad in this world is our strength.
This is a writer who reveals good and evil. She reminds us of faith within and without organized religion.
She reminds us of the people who offer up & give so much to protect, & that gives me hope
Thank you

I'm going to paste in almost exactly the same review as for book #4 in the series, with a slight modification below.
Good as always. I'm addicted to this series and my opinion has ceased to be objective. If you are not already a fan, I'd recommend starting at the first book. I am sure now that her focus is slowly shifting from action/adventure/dog training/other cool stuff to human personalities. Which was always a big part of the books, but it's now getting to the point of being more like a slowly evolving romance than a mystery series.
I like it this way, but I kind of liked it the other way, too.

Absolutely loved this gritty Jessica Anderson murder mystery. Keur delivers a finely woven drama, her extensive experience and knowledge of training and working with a team of special dogs is amazing. Realistic characters overcoming past traumas, especially Jessica and Landon are well potrayed. Keur delves deep into the gritty underbelly of evil. As Jessica and her family, law enforcement and SAR teams with their dogs, search for bodies dropped from a plane, kidnapped victims and missing people. Another exciting novel, thanks

Sheriff Reid is starting to be at peace….

Jessie has figured out how to successfully interact with him. All is getting right in the world. While there is violence in these stories it is not all shooting, and violence. There’s some of course. While Jessie is close to those action heroes who an out shoot, out fight, outrun, out best everyone, she does have some weakness and is better about trying to change herself to be nicer and so lone gun warrior. Part is her dogs which keep her focused. This good series, seems very real.

Such a fabulous series. The stories, the character & relationship developments over the 5 books have been so great. And of course, love all the dog behavior and training aspects throughout. I fly through the books in a matter of hours because I can't put them down once I start! Really enjoying the slow growing relationship between Jessica and Landon...respect, trust, even a hint of real friendship...without a bunch of sexual drama. Although, who knows where things will lead when starting off in this way! Can't wait for book 6! Thank you Dawn!

A Jessica Anderson K-9 Mystery Book 5

A great book with a great ending. Jessie doing what she does best helping others. Landon needed her help both professionally and personally, facing reality and the past. Oli and the dogs play significant roles again in this book. I would recommend this book and series to anyone who loves dogs and mystery. Quick and easy read. I hope Jessie and Landon’s story continues. I would miss them if they don’t.

Chilling

Every Jessica, "Jessie" Anderson mystery is full of outdoor adventure and misadventure. This mystery discussed a dismal topic involving abduction and rape. Jessie, her dogs work as a team to find missing persons. Smile always hoping to rescue a live person, that is sometimes not the case. I want to know what happens next withn Nicholson, how Landon deals with the truth Jessie shared with him and the background and future of Dr. Sol.

Another excellent offering.

This series has been remarkable. The characters continue to be developed into a cohesive fighting for good unit even though most have little in common. Never a boring moment, either the dogs used in search and rescue are learning new inventive ways to work better,or human counterparts are getting in over their heads, this book will keep you turning the pages and looking for more.

Brilliant!

If you haven’t read this series and you appreciate real, gritty mystery, you need to start it now. Although it’s part of a great series, I appreciate this book as a complete read. Fast paced where it needs to be, and complex and detailed in the characters and their relationships, it kept me engrossed. I’ve always been interested in our connection to canines. Jessie and her pack will keep me coming back.

Very hard to put this one down!

The story is written in a way that is so descriptive, you can visualize exactly how it would look like, feel like, etc. NOT overdone by any means. It captures your attention and holds it through the entire book. I also am a fan of how the characters, family and dogs are growing and developing in each book she writes. I will definitely keep reading this series!

No one’s exactly sure how several bodies found during SAR excursions died; neither is it clear why a loner suddenly becomes a rapist. And it’s inexplicable that so many young women are being successfully abducted or surviving thwarted abduction attempts, then they make a big mistake. Also, Landon’s personal crisis inhibits his healing and takes a dire downturn. Jessie’s overcompensating, dissatisfied by not feeling herself but she’s trying hard to be a team playing.

I Can't Get Enough!! Great Read!!

I've read all 5 books. Every single book has been wonderful! They feed my love of dogs and mystery! Each book is well written and the descriptions are on point. I absolutely love the characters ( especially the dogs ).
The books are an exciting read too. I've found myself turning the pages faster and faster as the excitement mounts.
Thank you so very much D. L. Keur for many hours of enjoyment reading your books.

same issues as in previous books

The cases and the dogs are interesting and worth reading. The human MCs not so much. They are the most irritating in this book that they’ve ever been. There’s a big turning point at the end. Not sure if it will help make them more sympathetic characters. Right now I’d just as soon see both of them gone. Like the secondary characters much better at this point. Not sure if I’ll read the next book or not.

This was more of a character study...

Let's figure out what is going on with Landon.

Well done. Jesse's research on the uber intelligent, ultra sensitive, sort of hinted at Landing maybe being borderline autistic. his dislike of certain smells, tastes, touch.... Socially awkward. Could definitely be. Will we ever get a better explanation of why Clyde dislikes him so?

Great series

This is such a great series. I can hardly wait for book 6. I love the mystery, the solving of cases, how the dogs work, the characters, just everything about them. The others were very close in time line, this one does a small jump in time, I think 6 months which I liked. Enjoy.

Another very good book!

I always like Ms. Keur's work. Her K-9 novels are interesting as much for learning about dog behaviours as the story itself. These Jessica Anderson books are a good escape from everyday life for a short time . The books are thoughtful and spiritual without "preaching". Highly recommend for an enjoyable read.

Incredible, fabulous reading.

Jessie and her dogs are the core of the story, the rescues and searches so real. The strength of family, the growing friendships between neighbors and the law enforcement. The real you find between the lines. Intense emotion evoked, making the reader part of the reality. More...I always want more.
