“Someday” I'm going to give Stacy Hawkins Adams a big hug for writing this awesome story. While I acknowledge the Lord inspires Christian Fiction authors, the artist is one who actually toils to bring the work to the pages of a book. Stacy Hawkins Adams efforts were not in vain. The characters of Rachelle and Gabe Covington, Aunt Irene and Melba, Uncle Charles and Troy reminded me of people in my own life. They were real family and friends that I loved, and rooted for as I turned each and every page. The quaint city of Jubilant was a refreshing change, as so many African-American novels are set in urban cities. I can see why Rachelle made the journey there. It made me want to sell my house and move to place where life felt simpler. That’s good writing.

As the symbol of purpose and destiny, the “someday list” itself, served the story well. I have a list of goals and I have timelines to complete them. I check my schedule a few times a year to see if I’m on task. Sometimes I am, sometimes I’m not, but I am the quintessential list person. However, there was something different about the “someday list” in this novel, even for a planner like myself. Something I describe as the spiritual fiber that may not always exist in our list of to do’s and to accomplish.

The Someday List made me think about myself and my life. The life lessons were hard to miss. I’m hard pressed to believe anyone would close its pages and not feel the same way. So I give this book the highest review I can assign, because not only did I enjoy it, I was challenged. In my opinion that’s the role of literature, to shape our conscious thinking and inspire our actions in a way that also entertains us. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who feels the same.

This may have been my first book by Adams but it won’t be my last! In fact, I’m already wishing the next two books in the series were available to read on Kindle Unlimited like The Someday List is.

One thing I loved the most about this story was that Adams spared no one when it came to flaws, some hidden beneath the surface and others more obvious. From devoted believers to prodigals and every level in between, the characters in The Someday List present an authentic picture of the struggle to share this planet with each other. Every reader should be able to see themselves in at least one character in this book, if we’re being honest with ourselves. Perhaps we may not share the specific sins or stumbling points… perhaps we may… but the bottom line is that these characters are real and honest with weaknesses common to many.

Aunt Melba was my favorite character, hands down. She brought smiles and laughter when needed & also brought home some wisdom at the appropriate time. She was full of life – with a surprising history – and I’d love to read more of her story (she doesn’t seem to have her own book but I hope we spend more time with her in the next two books.)

The writing style was a little disjointed sometimes, at least as far as background information. Most of the time we’re left to connect the dots on our own, and that works just fine with a couple of exceptions. I struggled to connect with Rachelle in certain areas, particularly regarding her first marriage, and I would have liked to see a bit more to the ending. But, then again, life doesn’t always make sense nor tie up nicely with a red bow so in that sense Adams continues the pattern of authenticity that we see throughout the story.

BOTTOM LINE: The Someday List by Stacy Hawkins Adams is a story of decisions that change the trajectory of our lives. Good decisions that lead us closer to each other & Jesus… and poor decisions that cause painful divisions and lifelong regret. Some surprising twists and turns are in store as you get to know & love these characters and, while I wish there was a bit more emotional dimensionality to the events that transpire, it really touched my heart.

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I read via Kindle Unlimited.)

This was a really good book! Wanted to stand up and clap at the end! I like the way the author tied real problems that ALL people, even Christians, face in everyday life. None of the characters were perfect, but by God's grace, were overcomers, allowing God to pull down strongholds in their lives. If we were really real with others about what we go through, there would be a great move of healing - spiritually, physically, and mentally. Great, inspiring read!

As with all inspirationals there's a religious message woven throughout this story, it's just not as subtle as in others in this category. That means if obvious references to God and scripture bothers you, this book definitely isn't for you. Anyway, back to the book...

The life of our main character, Rachelle, is in crisis. Her marriage is falling apart because she's dissatisfied with her life and her husband's cheating. I really wasn't certain how the author was going to resolve her problems. That unfortunately is only the beginning of my unhappiness with this book...I hated the ending...because there wasn't a concrete solution to her marital problems. During their time apart, Rachelle and her husband went through many changes of the heart and when he returned to the country, they agreed to meet and talk...but that's it. The End. I would have much preferred the book be a little longer so we saw the marriage being put back together, and how God worked through them as a couple. There was even talk of going on a mission trip together but that was just another dropped thread.

Other niggles...there are definite holes in the personalities of the secondary characters and the descriptions of the events and settings could have been more vivid. Oh and there are few details on what caused the rift in Rachelle's marriage. I would have appreciated a little background aside from her husband being a good provider but emotionally distant because after the learning of her daily activities...she's pretty shallow. And I forgot to mention that she's an adult who allowed her parent's to bully her into a divorce while in college and they still bully her. She has no backbone.

I'd hoped to find out more information about this couple in the next book but that wasn't to be. The time interval jumps six years and follows another family member. So, because of all the niggles, dropped thread and the abrupt ending, I won't be reading the rest in the series. It's too bad, since it has potential but the follow through just wasn't there for me.

Apart from her heart surgeon husband, two young children she loves, and her rather privileged lifestyle, Rachelle Covington isn't exactly sure who she is or what she truly wants for herself. Her journey to figuring it out, and dealing with her past, begins in The Someday List by author Stacy Hawkins Adams.

I can tell how much I'm enjoying a novel when, at some point or another, I hear myself as I read: hear myself laughing, hear myself gasping, hear myself talking back to a character who needs to catch a clue. In this case, a number of points during the reading were punctuated with an audible "Mm" from me as Rachelle's situation incited my interest, my reasoning, my emotions. The story deals with some hard, real, messy issues without being "messy" about it but also without sugarcoating it all for faith's sake—the strong faith theme notwithstanding.

Now, while I could feel for Rachelle and a good handful of the other characters, there was one key character who didn't quite have me convinced. When an antagonist is headed for a change down the road, that character is most intriguing when he or she doesn't seem "bad" just for the sake of it, when there's a little deeper dimension to who the character really is and why. This story's "villain" didn't intrigue me that way, so his portion of the plot eventually fell a bit flat to me.

Still, this novel kept me invested from the first page to the last, and I deem it a worthwhile pick for other fans of contemporary Christian Fiction.

I must admit I rolled my eyes too many times while reading this one. I'm a guy & this is a rather girlish read so, yeah.

Rachelle is wife to Gabe, a star surgeon & they seem to have it all: the money, cars, social notoriety & great friends. But beneath the facade, their marriage is crumbling. Rachelle goes to her home town after attending her friend (who's only got weeks left due to breast cancer) to figure her life out. Meeting her long lost love while in her home town throws everything into a tailspin.

This is a bit of a pop read but female readers will resonate w/ it a lot. I found the characters quite cliche but kept digging through for the hidden literary nuggets here & there. If you're looking for a mushy read, here's one.

Well, I may not be as impressed as others with this story. A woman in an clearly high end life, she had been married for 11 years to a her husband who is now a much sought after surgeon. Providing her a lifestyle of luxury. She had 2 wonderful children and needs for nothing, living a Christian life.
Yeah..So husband goes off on a medical conference, then to Uganda on a Mission trip AND yes kids to grandparents for a month :-( hhmm. Ok So she Rachelle visits a friend from youth,in LA Jillian who is dying.
This involves God alot . She flees to her hometown to kinda do a bucket list
To find her true self. The visit with her friend opened her eyes making her think
There is more for her life than wife and mother? She comes across an ex love gets confused..
Well..At this point as a Christian I am not happy, because I would NEVER do any of this to my husband. Sin is thought, word and Deed. So the violation in the marriage is so deep already, you need to turn back and fix things now. Your unhappy.. Get over it and stand up and fix yourself in your shoes. Wow I know so many men and women do this but as a Christian you don't. You fix it. We don't.
40 plus years- we both feel the same way. We adore each other. The 'tonight's of another? Really, no NOT possible. We talk we laugh, we could NEVER think of hurting the other. We spend all our time and thoughts together. If YOU have Godin your live I can't see you living so selfishly.
Perhaps it is a good story to read to self reflect for those with too much and need to feel themselves back to reality. Like watching those silly reality shows - you see how stupid they are,YOU laugh at them thinking they are 'acting' but they are not that is really how vain they are.
This should show YOU that you AND your spouse are to talk to EACH other, constantly know each other. You do NOT decide in the middle of a marriage
You want out because you think you should do a bucket list and discover yourself.

What do you do when your husband takes you for granted and often seems to ignore you and your feelings? What do you do when you run across your 1st husband who you divorced but "know" you still have feelings for? How do you confront the fact you seem to have lost who you are versus your roles as wife, mother, daughter and friend?
Rachelle has to answer all these questions and more quickly. She gets an invitation to see her best friend from childhood to find out she is dying. Rachelle begins to evaluate where she is in life and decisions she made without complete analysis. Her BFF makes her confront her mortality and the distance she has put between her and her faith. When she returns home to Jubilant and her past, she realizes she has to make some choices or pass on bad habits and have another failed marriage.
First time reading this author, but will not be my last. Great read for those facing crossroads and hard choices...

Interesting story about finding God in the midst trials; faith and forgiveness. I'd prefer it if the gospel was presented more explicitly, if at all, especially since the book talked slot about how to become a Christian. However very good story line that had me eager to read more, which is probably why I read it so quickly. Would I recommend? Probably not, as I feel it would confuse some people regarding how one comes to Christ.

I loved the book but I didn't really like the ending. I loved all of the characters but I was mad at Gabe. I haven't been fully delivered so I would have been out. I felt sorry for Troy and Rachelle's parents were a bit much. I believe the story was realistic and I like that the "religion" wasn't over the top. I was looking to see what would happen when Gabe got back from Uganda. Maybe another story?

A beautiful home, 2 great children and a husband who is one of the top cardiac surgeons in Houston, what more could Rachelle want? Perhaps an identity apart from husband and children, the career she once enjoyed, feeling truly loved, any one of those might help. Deciding what to do is difficult and combined with n old love interest appearing unexpectedly, Rachelle questions her life at every turn. With the help of a friend and family she learns, with God anything is possible.

Thought Provoking

This is my first read of this author’s work. The someday list was very realistic and thought provoking. The characters were well defined and made you believe their stories. It also challenges me as a reader access my own life to make sure I’m accomplishing what I’ve set out to do. I look forward to reading more of her work.

This was a decent story but I needed a lot more from the ending. All the issues was tied up pretty quickly and I got the impression that it wont be brought back up in the next book. But I will read the next book anyway because my OCD won't let me turn away!!!

Well, it wasn't a BAD book, but 40 year-olds were acting like young teens and 60 year-olds were treating them as such. The Christian part was too much "tell" and not enough "show". (And yes, I know that the characters were finding their way.)

Rachelle and Gabe Covington have been married eleven years. Rachelle had everything she could possibly want as far as material things, but she longed for something more meaningful. Tired of being in the presence of a man who just didn’t get it, she left Houston, TX and took a trip to San Diego; her childhood friend, Jillian, had requested her presence. The reason for the invite was a sad one, however, Rachelle was sure of one thing when she left – It was time to figure out who she was and what she wanted in life.
When Rachelle’s plane landed in Houston, she was not ready to go home. She got in her car and headed to Jubilant, TX to spend some time with her Aunt Irene, Uncle Charles and the rest of her family. She found them at St. Peter’s Baptist Church along with something much unexpected.
Back in Houston, Gabe was having a temper tantrum because his wife wasn’t at home where she belonged. He was about to leave for Uganda and Rachelle should have been there to drive him to the airport.
The thought came to me as I was writing this review that with all the talk of God in this book something was missing. Characters spoke of having a relationship with God, and this was good. However, there can be no “true” relationship with God unless a person accepts Jesus as personal Lord and Savior. Jesus is the key. He is the One who died for our sins. He is the mediator between God and man. He is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. As characters talked about living for God and having a relationship with Him it would have been great if this extremely important point was made clear. Chapter twenty-five or twenty-seven; either would have been a perfect place for this gifted author to include it.
I did enjoy reading The Someday List. I liked Aunt Melba; she was a lively woman. Rachelle stayed in Jubilant for quite a while and during that time she resolved past issues, learned about forgiveness, and started to talk to God. And while in Uganda, Gabe learned quite a few important life lessons. The story didn’t end the way I was hoping it would, but Rachelle seemed okay with the choice she made and that was a good thing. I like how the author shows Christians are not perfect people, reminding us saved folk that we all fall short but God is always there ready to forgive and to help get us back on the right path.
This book includes an excerpt from the next novel in the Jubilant Soul series. It looks like Rachelle’s cousin, Indigo, has returned to Jubilant after attending college. I liked Indigo. I didn’t get to know her very well in this book, so I’m really looking forward to reading her story!
