No rating, just note to self: I started this story and several things were off for me. I personally don't like tropes centered around plays/theaters/actors/female journalists/outspoken tstl heroines... and I know I didn't read very far into the story, but both the heroine and hero just weren't my cup of tea.

After being fired from yet another position, Daisy Merrick gets a temporary job as a critic for the local newspaper. Her assignment is to review the latest play from author Sebastian Grant, Earl of Avermore, on its opening night. When her scathing review hits the papers, Sebastian is livid. The play closes within a week.

Sebastian owes a manuscript for a new book to his publisher, but hasn't been able to write a page in years. The publisher hires Daisy to help Sebastian with his book. But Sebastian has no intention of going along with this plan.

This is the last book in Laura Lee Guhrke's Girl-Bachelor series. It sounded like a promising plot to me, but I was totally bored with the first half of this book. The story trudged along and I wasn't sure Daisy would ever get to help Sebastian with his writer's block. The second half of the book moved along a little faster, but it couldn't rescue this story. My rating: 2.5 Stars.

Audible audiobook issues: I would not recommend purchasing the audiobook from Audible because there are issues with it.

Audiobook issue #1. A sentence from two chapters was re-recorded for some unknown reason. I don't own the ebook, so I can't make comparisons. I'm listening and all of a sudden, I hear a different female voice narrating a sentence, then the audio returns to the original narrator. It could have been the same female narrator, but the listener can definitely tell that the narration was a re-recording.

Audiobook issue #2. The first love scene in Chapter 16 is incomplete. Right when he was about to enter her, the audio fades away and the next thing I hear is "Chapter 17." Fortunately, there was another love scene in Chapter 17.

Disclaimer

First off, I do not like to read HRs where the heroine (and in some cases, the hero) dreams of becoming a published writer or if she writes for a newspaper. But once I begin a series, I like to complete all the books in it if I can. Alas, here I am, writing a review for a book I probably would have never picked up.

I bought the last three audiobooks in this series on Audible during their summer 2023 sale. I prefer listening to audiobooks over reading ebooks. If I had read the ebook version of this book, I'm confident I would have ended up not finishing it.

Review

The setting is 1896 (Victorian period). There're trains and telegrams, so a nice change from the Regency period.

The heroine, Daisy, can't keep any job her older sister, Lucy, finds for her. Her passion is writing and she wants to get her book published. (This was hinted at in the previous book.) She gets hired temporarily for a night to review a play written by the renowned writer Sebastian Grant (the hero, who's also an earl), who's returning to London after a 3-year absence (or longer).

Sebastian is Seb knows his play wasn't his best work but he needed the money. Although this is historically accurate, I didn't like to read/hear that many of the aristocrats were going broke due to the economic transition from tenets working on farms to factories in the cities. The hero in book #2 was also broke and he was a duke.

I thought the beginning started out strong. I enjoyed Daisy's review of the play and her exchanges with Seb when he went to complain about it to his publisher, Marlowe (hero from Book 1). He can behave like a child sometimes. The narrator's voice isn't as deep when she reads Sebastian's dialogues when he behaves this way.

Seb still owes Marlowe a manuscript (3 years late) so Marlowe hires Daisy to help Seb with his writing (since she won't back down from Seb) and in turn, Seb can help her improve her writing. There's the forced proximity!

This is where the book starts to drag and become repetitive.
- Seb refuses any help from Daisy
- Daisy tries to persuade him to accept her help
- Seb thinks back to his time on the continent and his
- Daisy thinks he's paying her false compliments about her appearance
- No romance!

So that 👆 about sums up the first half of the book. After their first kiss (around the 60% mark), the story kind of focuses on romance but barely. The romance felt forced, rushed, and lukewarm, with no passion between Daisy and Seb. After they have sex, Then we learn that Seb is cynical about love, leading to the third-act break-up.

I liked Seb's profession of love but the ending was so abrupt and there was no epilogue! I have no idea what becomes of Daisy's writing. Like, did she ever become a published author? Did Seb manage to pay off his debts?

Other notes:
-Even though Daisy and Seb constructively criticize each other's manuscripts, the reader never truly knows what they were writing about (at least, I didn't). I think they each wrote a love story.

- I liked Seb's aunt. She served as a chaperone when Daisy stayed in the country with Seb.

I have the first book of this series left to read, and then I will probably avoid this author's work for a year or two. I have not been impressed with this series at all.

The cover of With Seduction in Mind by Laura Lee Guhrke looks like the woman on it is pleasuring herself. That is probably the most shocking thing about this book. As for the story inside, I would say it was a pleasing one but didn’t have enough “oomph” where I can rave about it. But the setting is Victorian London 1896 (YAY) and Guhrke’s heroines are all on their own, making ends meet and don’t rely on a man to make them happy. (Double YAY) These Bachelor Girl books have a subtle feminist feel to them and Laura shows that a woman can have a career and find a man who will support her in her endeavors. The joy in reading is watching these men conform their way of thinking and lifestyle to the heroine’s and not the other way around.

Daisy Merrick is too feisty and outspoken and because of that she can’t keep a job. Daisy dreams of becoming a published author. She is sick of working for others and wants to have a job where she makes the decisions and doesn’t have to deal with men who disrespect her. She is able to find a job as a temporary reviewer for the Social Gazette. (Daisy is friends with the wife of the man who owns the paper). She reviews a play by the respected literary author, Sebastian Grant, Earl of Avermore. Daisy hates it and because of her scathing review, the play closes in a week. Sebastian is livid. He needs the money and the prestige because he has been out of the spotlight for so long. He has lost his writing muse because he has given up cocaine. He became an addict of the drug and now that he is recovering, he has lost his passion for the written word.

Because he has a contract where he has to deliver another book to his publisher, which coincidentally is owned by Lord Marlowe, the same man who runs the Social Gazette, he has no choice but to start writing again. Marlowe wants Daisy to assist Sebastian. This will help her become a better writer and push Sebastian into writing the book that is way past due. Sebastian is insulted, first because Daisy wrote that review and the fact that she can really find the problems with his writing. Sebastian has no choice and must accept Daisy’s help. But he is scared because what if she figures out that he is a hack and his masterful writing was all due to the drugs he took?

With Seduction in Mind had its moments I really enjoyed from the interactions between Daisy and Sebastian in the beginning where they seem to have a dislike for one another to where they talk about their literary aspirations. They are both able to see the truth about one another that lies deep inside. Daisy and Sebastian have doubts that almost consume them. The possibility of failure scares them both. Daisy is ashamed because she doesn’t want to disappoint her sister like the countless times she has done in the past. Sebastian’s need for acceptance is a bit deeper and because of it, he turns to Daisy for everything. She soon becomes his new drug that he wants to lose himself in.

Sebastian is tortured because of his addiction and lost of self. His constant pity party for became a bit too much at times. Daisy is very vocal with Sebastian and tells him to snap out of it. But it takes Sebastian too long to come to these conclusions about himself and that is where the story drags. Daisy and Sebastian’s attraction to one another was lukewarm and not the passionate coming together I would have liked to see.

With Seduction in Mind was simply okay.

Subito dopo erano cominciati i problemi.

«Devo lasciarti adesso, finchè riesco a farlo.»

I am quitting this book 50% in because I can’t stand the heroine and I don’t understand how an author can make a hero that is a rake, witty, and an artist- underwhelming... The heroine is just starting to warm up to him after half of the book is done. Sorry too late, I’m already bored! He should have been a little more dashing.

This is the fourth book in the Girl Bachelor Series and my least favorite of them.

I didn't really care for the hero, Sebastion Grant. He was too cynical for my taste and really not much of a gentleman. And he wasn't charming enough to pull off these shortcomings either.

I suppose I like the heroine well enough. She was outspoken and stood up for herself. But the story was just boring to me. It read like a documentary on the emotions authors go through when going through a writing dry spell.

So, disappointing to say the least... I'm wondering if this book wraps up the Girl Bachelor Series? It was left a little open ended with some characters that could come into play in books of their own.

Victorian. 1896. This had the same book publisher,
Harry Marlowe, of book #1 in this series. I stopped
at 55%.

I found this couple Sebastian and Daisy dull & sleep-
inducing. And lacked chemistry. He acted enchanted
by her freckles. Huh? Marlowe had the same affliction
in bk #1, with his future wife. Don't most folks have
freckles?

Successful Seb had books published & plays produced,
but now had writer's block. He was 3yrs overdue to
deliver a new bk, per his contract w/ Marlow. Marlow
assigned Daisy, with no experience, to be Seb's editor!
Seb critiqued Daisy's book-in-progress and called it
"sentimental hogwash."

Readers were told Seb was a recovering cocaine addict.
I did not get deep into Seb's issues, but he came across
as lazy and entitled.

Note: I finished a re-read of book #1 on 06/06/21.

Ceritanya seharusnya punya potensi menarik, tetapi malah jadi biasa-biasa saja. Too bad!!!

Sebastian Grant, Earl of Avermore, adalah penulis buku drama yg dipentaskan.

This book sadly didn't impress me. I liked all Ms. Guhrke's books I've read so far but this one fell short in my opinion. In short, the story was boring. I liked the premise of a young writer helping an experienced writer and in turn he tutors her, but the execution could have been much better. Maybe it was just that my expectations were too high after reading a few of Ms. Guhrke's books and loving them but I was really bored while reading this. So much that I skipped quite a few pages and I still had to push myself to finish the book. I had difficulty connecting with the characters and I didn't find the conflict interesting. Unfortunately, the story and the characters did not make an impact on me.
Unlike the other books in the series this one's not quite upto the mark!

Just a wonderful book. I am going back and reading some good books that I missed in the past. I am so glad to have caught up with this delightful book. If you have ever been a writer or know a writer you will appreciate this story of two writers with "writerly" issues. Sebastian is an arrogant, temperamental earl, a brilliant writer loaded with self-doubt and a troubled past. Daisy has all of the uncertain optimism of a brand new writer while being feisty and outspoken. Can two partial writers make one whole one?

The dialogue was funny and authentic. The story developed somewhat slowly, but completely logically. The ending was so sweet that I cried. With Seduction in Mind is a lovely book. Sometimes the older books are really good. This is definitely one of them.

I love Laura Lee Guhrke's writing. I love the late-Victorian setting and the girl bachelors. Her love scenes are swoon-worthy.

But . . . . it's hard to write an exciting book about a man with writer's block. Not a lot happens. There aren't many characters -- just the hero and heroine, with a minor role for great aunt Mathilda and an even more minor role for sister Lucy. There are, however, pages and pages about why one writes and why one loses the ability and/or desire to write.

This was a sweet story, but I must confess that I skimmed vast parts of it. The love scenes, though, should be read carefully!
