I'm not even going to try and rate this book, it's pretty much impossible for me to make up my mind. There were parts i loved, but there were also some parts that had me exasperated. Nothing that has to do with the story itself, but my personal "happy place".

Before you start the book there are a few things that are vital to keep in mind: Eric is extremely good looking (Yes, suspend total believe that there is no such a person). He has a very carefree personality and how he raises his son and how he behaves, would never be called normal. He is a very unique character, that if you're in the right mood would seem amusing most of the time.

Things i loved:
*Peter, Jason and David. There was nothing i did not like about their scenes or personality.
*Eric's parents were great secondary characters. I found myself laughing at a lot of their scenes with Eric.
*Eric's display of love for Jason. It was very endearing, if not a little over the top sometimes. Like whenever he pictured the worst case scenario on pretty much anything the boy would do. Then again, it seems there are parents who are as paranoid out there.
*The scenes between David and Jason. That was such a cute relationship. Made me feel like a total perv at times too, for just how hot they could get with each other.
*Rose and Eric's friendship. I absolutely could not help but shake my head and laugh out loud whenever there was a scene between these two. They treat each other as enemies, but deeply care for one another. The fact that Eric's best friend is also the same age as his mother, was quite refreshing.
*Eric's mother when she was in mama bear mode. I was rooting every time and the way she handled everybody, including Eric was hilarious.

Things that did not work for me:
*Eric's overly naive personality. There were times that i found it endearing, but when the same outcome kept happening over and over again; because he never thought things through, it made me want to shake him. No matter how naive a person can be, i thought he should have at least thought about how Peter would feel about his decisions...before he did it! Instead he would go in half cooked and get himself in the strangest situations.

All right folks - what can I say about this one. It was a free read and I always caution on you get what you pay for. That was before I read some really excellent free writing and this is included. At first I was thinking that this book is way too long with 76 chapters. Eric was a bit whiny and I am shocked that he ever passed for straight. Jase was just too cute for words and you could not help but fall in love with Pete, David and the Mother was outstanding.

When I began reading, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. Everything was just too perfect and we all know what happens when things are too good in books. But honestly, as you read, you just want to read about their lives and the day to day interactions. I could honestly read 100 more chapters. I had a lot of fun with this book in a Seinfeld kind of way. Everything just happened and some of it was outrageous and you think, no way can all of that happen to one person (Eric), but with the characters and the writing you can just about believe it is all true. I was sad when it was over and hope he decides to write more about this cast of characters!

This was a free read from Terence Audette's site. Editing & grammar isn't always great, but I can overlook that as this just made me feel happy!

It tailed off a little too abruptly at the end - the last chapter was only produced a couple of months ago & the author has said that it may be revisited in the future. Still - a 4½ star read.

(added from comment made at a later date:
Having read a couple of negative reviews of this story, I just wanted to add a couple of things in its defence.

It could use a lot of editing (just for the sake of a few commas or apostrophes alone). It is a free read & was put up on Terence Audette's site over several years & so, I'd imagine, evolved. It can, therefore, meander a little. It isn't of the highest standard of writing. It is an 'instalove' tale - the MCs fall in love very, very quickly. It made me happy.

As with watching a film, sometimes, I have a real craving for Arthouse & sub-titles but, othertimes, my heart desperately needs Chick flicks & Cherry Garcia.)

This one is an all time favourite of mine. One of my first forays into the MM scene. I was so sad to see it end. This one for me could of gone on indefinitely. Funny sweet adorable there are not enough good words to describe it. I just loved everybody, male and female, and that says a lot as I tend to hate most femmale characters lol.

Ok I've seen this free fic recommended several times now (very enthusiastically I might add) so I thought I'd give it a try.

Wow. I pretty much never quit reading something once I've started, but I just couldn't deal with this one. I gave up at around page 40, and I only kept it up that long out of sheer stubbornness and determination to see it improve. I even skipped ahead to see if things would get better. They don't.

So what's my problem? First, one of my hugest pet peeves: the insta-love phenomenon. The doc and the widow immediately “fall in love” after having met each other ONE time, which I think is totally ridiculous. There was no build-up, no getting to know the characters at all. Actually, it felt a lot like I had just been dropped right into the middle of an ongoing story and had missed the whole beginning -- like the part where the characters actually talk to each other and develop some kind of relationship before professing their eternal love.

Furthermore, there doesn’t seem to be much direction in the plot -- no cohesiveness. Generally speaking, it just feels like a bunch of random snippets put together without much thought to transitions or underlying storyline. (What underlying storyline?)

Bottom Line: Sorry to say it, but I really didn't like this one at all and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. But as always, my opinion is just my own, and as evidenced by the multiple good reviews that prompted me to read this to begin with, there are obviously plenty of others who will feel differently about this than I did.

Its free, yes it needs editing amongst a few other oddities, including the writing and structure. I am not going to nitpick, it was enjoyable and made me feel warm and happy. Pete and Eric were lovely and its "fast love" not a worry for me. It's gorgeous and fun, a few good chuckles as well, I loved it. Worth reading as long as you can go with the warts and all theory.

Even though I haven't finished I know this one is going on the "My Favorites" shelf already because I just LOVE Eric and Pete. Eric is so warm and loving with the quirkiest sense of humor and a mother that kind of creeps me out. Fun and touching, family first story with love being the core and true foundation of the book. It's one of the books you can't wait to find out the ending... but that you hate to have end.

Okay, I just finished and I have to tell you this story is so amazingly witty, funny, loving, tender, quirky, LOL, entertaining, etc. etc. etc. that I had to create a new shelf just for it... My 6 Star Favs. I know GR goes up to five stars, but I've found so many good stories that giving five stars for me is pretty standard. This story tops them all. It is a free-read and I only wish I could purchase it in mobi or prc format so I could get it on my Kindle and have with me always for when I need a smile.

Fantastic story and now I have to go hunting and see if Terence Audette has more to offer me. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

Okay, so yeah, they get together in this whole love at first sight thing that was a wee bit high on the roll my eyes scale, but you know what? After I read further, I just didn't care anymore! I found myself grinning from ear to ear so many times while reading this book that by the end I was nearly giddy. And I'm grumpy and irritable most of the time, so that's saying something! If you're looking for something light and fun, with great supporting characters, and sweet romance, this is the book for you.

I can't give any star because I didn't finish it. Read up to chapter 46 (of 73!!! yeah long freebie).
I was an amazing book, but in chapter 47 I read (well, start to and then give up!) a 14 years boy, first person narration, sex experience.
Nope, not for me...great book, up to that point. There, with David (the boy) sex the book cross my comfort zone.

This was a really fun romp through the daily life of the absolute sweetest family. This is a very thorough book too, probably overly thorough as far as page length goes but I'm not complaining. I couldn't get enough of their daily lives. I loved the little attentions to detail too. Eric's relationship with his son Jason just melts your heart. And Eric and Pete are like two pieces of a puzzle. It was the whole insta-love kinda thing but as much as some people hate that, it can and does happen in real life when people meet someone that just "clicks" with them. This is fiction. I don't want real life in my fiction! I loved Eric's character. He was so quick witted and funny. I cracked up so many times at the things that he said, especially in the conversations with his son. His mom was a fantastic character! The blurb calls her "momzilla from Hell" but I don't think so in a bad way. She's overbearing but really a great mom and adds a great dynamic to the story. Oh, and the sex? Man was it HOT!!! LOL!

People have pointed out editing issues but trust me, as a part-time editor, I've seen MUCH worse in much shorter pieces. This seems to me to have been something that the author was doing for fun that maybe took on a life of its own? I think if it were to be published, there is a lot that is redundant that could be removed. But this takes place over 2 years (Jase goes from 5 to 7) and it's nearly a daily accounting, so of course it would be long.

I hope that the author is going to get aroung to finishing it sometime in the near future. I can't wait to see how it ends! Excellent book!

Once you get used to the completely random topic changes, from one paragraph to the next, sometimes even within a paragraph, then you enjoy it. The characters make this an extremely good story that is, like Seinfeld, really about nothing in particular.

Eric is an absolute riot, and his relationship with Jase is so real it hurts. My daughter still leans on me like I'm furniture. Difference is that now she outweighs me by quite a bit, so she has to hold me up while she "leans." The "dick naming" conversation is worth reading the rest of the whole, long-winded, far-fetched thing.

The love story between Eric and Pete is beautiful and though it's worse than insta-love -- this felt like "pre-love" -- once they actually move in together and start to live their normal lives, it's gorgeous. Their sex life was certainly quite a bit of poetic license, but I'm sure most readers, like me, will enjoy every single scene.

Rose and Eric are just epic. Eric's Mom is just perfect as the Italian Mamma: perpetually cooking and feeding anyone within touching distance, domineering, interfering, but always "for their own good."

There were several plot twists that were overboard and unnecessary, IMHO. Still, it's worth it just to meet the people in this book. It had me LMAO several times, giggling or chuckling at other times. That in itself is good, I needed it.

This book was a great price...free!! I have paid too much money for way shorter published books with similar editing problems that were far less interesting. In fact, most of the unpublished books/stories I've read are better than the published ones. This was a fun book. However, Eric started getting on my nerves a lot. I couldn't stand his controlling mother. But that had a lot to do with Eric. At times I wanted to scream at him to GROW A PAIR and stop letting your mother control your life!! MAN UP!!! Pete, bless his heart, had the patience of a saint. Loved David and Sam, although I do think that 14 was too young to engage in a sexual relationship and I felt that Eric actually encouraged David to do so. Jase was adorable, and in a lot of ways was more thoughtful and intelligent than his father. Even with the before mentioned problems, overall the book was engaging and entertaining.

The short description says it all. Sweet, lots of sex--some not plausible to me as a gay man (way too many times in a day and using shampoo as lube in a shower? How to quickly seize up your ass!!!) but all that said, I did read the whoe thing and will read any sequel. Enjoyable fluf. I don't have kids and part of my want a to believe 6 and 7 year olds act this way but it also seems kind of over the top. It did make me want to have a little boy. I would actually give this 3.5 stars but I didn't feel it deserved 4.

Terence Audette is like that random ace that major league scouts uncover that can consistently throw pitches near 100 mph, but lacks consistency in getting the ball over the plate. Just pure raw talent that needs some guidance. I'm not going to lie, while this story lacked the polish and balance of a well-edited, published book, I loved it. It's possible that I never laughed as hard throughout a book as I did with this one. I genuinely loved the characters and, even after an albeit unnecessary 1000 pages, I am really going to miss them all. The characters all had depth and contributions to make. The relationships were off the charts and I don't just mean the romantic leads, Eric and Pete, or for that matter David and Sam. I mean father and son (Eric and Jase especially, but also Eric and his dad), mom and son (Eric and his mother - who was an outstanding character), friends (Eric and Rose), etc. I for one appreciated how there was a strong gay couple as the basis for a loving family unit, and how their relationship raised the typical questions, but was generally well-dealt with and accepted as a norm. This book really made me appreciate my family and the important things in life. Personally, I can't wait to read anything more that T.A. writes.

That said, this is where people have criticized his effort and I can't help but concede the point and agree. For starters, this easily could have been 2 books. No doubt fans of this book would have followed these characters if the story had been broken up into more than one book, and would continue reading about them longer after "volume one". Additionally, while for the most part it's fun reading, much of the content could have been omitted to keep the quantity of pages manageable and it still would not have impacted the framework of the story. Further, the first half of the book is told from Eric's point of view. Once David is introduced, the story is told from differing point of views, and then 3 quarters of the way through we're back to just Eric. And oddly, at that point, we lose Sam and barely hear from David. I liked their relationship and it basically fell right off the map, which was a little disappointing. Additionally, it's unclear to me if this is an incomplete work, but if not, it does have an abrupt ending. There are definitely typos and punctuation errors that come with good editing assistance, but that didn't bother me, though I know it bothers some. One last criticism. While I really liked them all, Eric is my favorite character in the book. He is one the most clever characters I have ever read. If he was real, no doubt I would want him to be my BFF. However, I think he was made out to be less intelligent and more naive than someone with that much wit, the ability to run a company and have 2 intelligent parents can be; not to mention what a good dad and partner he is. Terrence, in future volumes please give Eric some more credit and less gratuitous attack scenes (those who have read this know what I mean).

All in all, a good effort with great characters and a story and author that show a ton of promise. I for one can't wait to read more from this author and about this captivating group.

When I saw the length of this book on my e-reader (636 pgs), I confess to being seriously intimidated. Once I started reading though, I quickly fell in love with the characters and never wanted it to end. I absolutely loved Eric's "voice" throughout the book. Yes, there were times I wanted to smack him upside the head right along with his mother but then he would interact with his son, Jase, and I would forgive him everything! Every child deserves as much love as Eric (as well as the rest of the family) bestows on his son!

While the book is not heavy in plot, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the characters day-to-day interactions...some of which made me laugh out loud, some of which made me cry and some of which made my temperature skyrocket (yup, the totally unrealistic yet sizzling sex!).

There were some issues with formatting and editing but not enough to drive me crazy. The ending was oddly abrupt but honestly? I didn't want it to end at all so I was more than happy to see that there are 4 chapters posted of The Good Doctor, Part 2!

More than 1,000 pages can be summarized with one sentence: Widower with little son and meddling mother falls in love with his doctor and turns out to be even more perfect than his love interest.

That's really almost all that happens. For some reason the first person narrator is switched right in the middle of the novel to have an inside view of the teenage foster son finding his first lover. As soon as their undying love has been consumated the narration switches back to the original narrator. Mind you, nobody else ever is chosen as narrator, neither the doctor nor the mother.

Oh, right, and in the end it turns out our narrator is amazingly, male model-ly handsome and his mother is filthy rich - no, he has absolutely no clue, he doesn't even know she's on the town council (When has she got the time, doing all that cooking, I wonder.), because (local) politics are completely unimportant to him. But then he really wants to get elected as mayor...

Weird book.

Some of the best drawn characters in any fiction and particularly in gay fiction. This story is on the short list of my short list, easily one of the most enjoyable reads of my life. It is a clever, witty, thoughtful and totally endearing love story, which has brilliant dialogue and situations which provide laugh-out-loud moments. The worst I can say about this story is that Book II unfortunately abruptly stops unfinished well over a decade ago at a Chapter 8.

Oh I totally loved this story. And Jase is a wonderful little boy and who wouldn't fall in love with David. The guys were so freaking funny and sexy. The sex was great and very descriptive for my liking. The one thing that did annoy the shit out of me was the mom. She was very overbearing, nosy, bossy and rude. I so wanted Eric to just tell her to fuck off SEVERAL times.

The best damn literature I've enjoyed in a long time. Fucking hysterical comedy with very touching moments of drama. Fabulous characters that leap at you and over-the-top shenanigans from a small family circus. A sitcom for the ages that should be produced on national TV. &, of course, there is great sex.

This was an interesting read, but I found it very difficult to connect to the story and the characters. The writing just didn't flow for me and, at times, it was a bit difficult to follow. It's not one that I can really give much of a recommendation to - I almost didn't even finish it myself.

Not a bad story, but it reads like a soap opera with no real climax or conclusion. It is more of a day to day telling of the life of the main character with several mini plots throughout. Not something I would recommend, but not a giant waste of time either seeing as I finished it.

This is one of the most wonderful heartfelt stories I have ever read. I love the characters and felt like I was part of there everyday life, watching them grow. Eric is an amazing dad and very well developed character I would most definitely read this again.
