Tete is a boy in a small European-like town. Recently some odd people have moved into the town, including the young vagrant Geeta who lives under the bridge. He befriends her and learns about her tragic past. Geeta then asks him to temporarily keep a mysterious clock for her. Shortly afterwards a dangerous man appears, one of the very last survivors of a race with powers over life and death.
Kei Toume (冬目景) studied at the Tama Art University in Tokyo. Her first manga, Rokujō gekijō, was published in Comic Burger magazine in 1992. The manga won her the Shiki prize in a contest held by Kodansha in 1993. A year later, her follow-up manga Mannequin also won a prize.
She started the series Lament of the Lamb in Comic Burger in 1996. This series ran for six years and was adapted into a radio play, an anime and a live action film.
In 1999, she began Sing Yesterday For Me, a manga inspired by a song of the Japanese rock group RC Succession. In addition, Toume contributes to a lot of fanzines and specialized magazines, and is also active in video games and films.
Her manga Kurogane and Lament of the Lamb have been translated into English.
I have mixed feelings about this manga. I did enjoy it but I was also kind of confused at times. The way the story is told is pretty neat. Chapters are called “nights” which is very fitting as most of the story happens at night other than a few exceptions at the beginning.
The premise is really interesting. Finding out about a race that could revive humans from death and a cult that is trying to take advantage of those powers is something that is enjoyable to read about(well, for me at least). The way the story was executed was mediocre. There are two words that perfectly describe how I understood Luno: Kind of. I was confused about almost everything the manga was trying to tell me. I kind of knew what the Moza race was, I kind of knew what the enemy was trying to do, I kind of knew how the enemy turned out the way he did. Luno started out well but fell apart when the climax came. The way the enemy just gave up without putting up any real fight was very unexcited and made me feel cheated because I was waiting for something awesome to happen. The ending was bittersweet and was nicely done.
The characters were good but the person who had the biggest spotlight was Geeta. I read this manga to find out what happened to her, and I read this manga to find out more about her. Geeta is one of the best parts of the story. Tete seemed more like a plot device but he had his moments. The characters all had good development considering how the manga is only six chapters.
The art is really beautiful and I loved the style the author had. The art was detailed and I never had to guess about what was going on or who was who. My only complaint is the layout. The panels were to small and not spaced out enough. Sometimes when the action scenes were happening I found myself getting a eye-sore because there was not enough space for my eyes to wander.
A hardcover manga! Quite a surprise. The cover is very nicely designed and the superfluous addition of Esperanto (the title means "moon", the chapters are called "nokto", or nights) adds points; the style is solid that far, but the plot's a bit messy and the paneling is too tight. Except for the title page of each of the few chapters, panels stay small, confining the technically solid illustration to rather unambitious expression. The plot falls apart at the end when the bad guy just kind of gives up.
The story in the first volume is more or less complete; a promised second volume has not appeared in about ten years and probably never will.
The ambience for this book is top-notch: stunning art, lovely character designs that could easily be told apart, nice background details. Everything about this felt tragic and hopeless, with little spots in the dark where Tete's innocence shone through.
The story was fairly basic. It all hinged on love vs revenge, but it was too short to give those moments enough time to build up and carry us through. Despite having a literal race of people with magic powers over life and death, being resurrected is just as depressing here as it is everywhere else. Immortality is a double-edged sword. The climax hung on a character-focused moment, but unfortunately, neither Algos nor Malt had enough screentime for it to hurt my feelings. The ending with Geeta and Tete was perfectly bittersweet because (again) immortality sucks.
It looked like the typical european fanzine trying to be manga. The story was confusing and some elements were pretty basic. I bet there are billions of better options to pick if you were looking for one volume manga.
