101 Probing Questions...101 Compassionate and Scriptural Answers from Focus on the Family's Mike HaleyAlmost daily we hear news reports that confirm the acceptance of homosexuality in our culture. Homosexuals are adopting children, appearing as characters on television programs, taking vacations catering to an exclusively gay clientele, and even seeking the right to "marry" their partners. But is this acceptance healthy for society?Few topics can raise so many questions so quickly. And for many readers, those questions hit close to home as they learn of the homosexuality of a loved one or close friend. Here are the answers to the most often asked questions about homosexuality, fielded by an expert on the subject...and a former homosexual himself.
“101 Frequently Asked Questions About Homosexuality” is a primer I think most casual readers will pull down from the shelf most often to review, to consult and to share with others. It is not a politically correct book and the author does not advocate moral relativism. And I have to admit – Haley’s direct counsel and firm stance on Biblical principles even startled me in a couple of places. But he is sensitive, sincere and consistent throughout.
The author made a wise decision to begin by reiterating the danger and folly of labeling (stereotyping) people and making snap judgments. No matter which "side of the issue" we are on, we shouldn’t let our assumptions, biases, subjective experiences, lack of understanding or intolerance negate or blindly lead us to ignore, dismiss, attack or diminish another person just because he has sincere (but different) beliefs, values or opinions. We should speak to the other person’s humanity. Genuinely make the effort to understand and relate to him or her as an individual.

Mike Haley’s answers to these four questions in particular impressed me the most: (1) To what extent should a gay father (living with another man) be involved in the lives of his children? (2) I have made the decision to leave homosexuality. What do I need to know? What have you seen in the lives of those who are successful? (3) What is a mentor’s role when helping women who struggle with same-sex attraction? (4) How can I inform my parents that I have embraced my sexuality and am not ready to change? I tried the whole “change thing” for a while, but I’m just not ready. How do I let them know without hurting or offending them?
Review: I found 101 Frequently Asked Questions about Homosexuality to be a highly educational and informative read. The question and answer format was highly accessible and thorough, answering my questions, questions I didn’t know I had, and many more. While I didn’t always agree with Mike Haley’s answers, the book broadened my perspective, forced me to think, and opened a new well of compassion in my heart for people struggling with same-sex attraction. The book is a work of Christian apologetics/education, so it does not promote or endorse the LGBT+ agenda. However, as someone who struggled with homosexuality for years, the author’s answers are compassionate and respect the dignity of people who have same-sex attractions. I highly recommend 101 Frequently Asked Questions about Homosexuality for people who have loved ones struggling with same sex attractions, people struggling with same-sex attractions, or people like me who want to more fully understand the many facets of a Christian response to homosexuality.
