There have been several different ways to interpret the teachings of Jesus on divorce and remarriage throughout Christian history. Six of these views are allowed to make their case, and are evaluated on how adequately they seem to explain key scriptures on this topic. The history of each of these views is also detailed, quoting the writings of theologians, and describing some of the historical drama surrounding these teachings. Get a broad overview of different perspectives on this topic, and of how they have played out over the centuries.
This book changed my view on divorce and remarriage.
I originally had the reformed view which would allow divorce in the case of adultery or abandonment.
Although I thought that divorce and marriage was permitted in those two cases, I also thought that the offended party ought to forgive in every case as Christ forgives us, essentially not allowing divorce.
Since reading through this book and seeing the scriptures explained and presented as they originally were without influence or translations, I can now see that Jesus staunchly opposed divorce in every case; even adultery.
I believe a legal separation is permitted in the case of perhaps safety or abuse, but never divorce. Reconciliation should always be pursued as love hopes all things even if that reconciliation takes 50 years or more.
