Corey Webb is living the American dream--successful business, beautiful wife, gifted daughter--but the dream he worked so hard to achieve is about to become a nightmare. When a chance encounter brings him face to face with the dark past he'd long since left behind, Corey knows the threat to his life and family could be deadly.
. . .It's Do Or Die
Unpredictable, intelligent, and terrifyingly ruthless, Corey's stalker will settle for nothing less than complete submission. He'll stop at nothing, and sacrifice anyone, to get what he wants. There's no point in running, no chance of hiding, and no hope for Corey and his family to escape unscathed. . .
Here’s a little about me, Brandon Massey. (“Massey” is not pronounced “macy,” by the way. Think of “mass” instead.)
I was born June 9, 1973, in Waukegan, Illinois. I grew up in Zion, a suburb north of Chicago.
I originally self-published Thunderland, my first novel, in 1999. After managing to sell a few thousand copies on my own, Kensington Publishing Corp. in New York offered me a two-book contract, and published a new, revised edition of Thunderland in December 2002.
Since then, I’ve published up to three books a year, ranging from thriller novels such as The Other Brother, to short story collections such as Twisted Tales, and anthologies such as Dark Dreams.
My newest suspense thriller, Covenant, was published in November 2010.
I’ve got plenty more stories in the works that I’ll publish in the coming years.
Ah…had a moment and decided to get into one of my favorite thrill authors as I know their work will be compulsively readable to help me finish–Thank you Brandon Massey for always coming thru with these plots and characters that draw you in always. This adult thrill read centered around Corey Webb, husband, father, business owner and man of secrets as his past comes back to haunt him in the form of an old homie from his time as a reckless youth committing crimes.. Starting off fast paced you meet Leon before 20% in the book and his frenetic energy and penchant for trouble send Corey and his wife Simone and daughter Jada into one’s worst nightmare. Leon tries his hand at kidnapping and extortion and holds Corey’s family for ransom as he tries to get as much money as he can from him…
“Wow, you haven’t changed at all,” Leon said with what might have been a trace of surprise. “The only difference now is that you’ve bought yourself some better window dressing, that’s all, sweeter butter cream icing, the big house, the luscious wife, the precocious kid, the lucrative white-collar business, all the cozy superficial trappings of the American dream, but I know the truth about you, even if su familia doesn’t. Once a hood, always a hood.” “I’m not like you,” Corey said firmly. “I never was.” “Repeat that to yourself enough times, maybe you’ll start to believe it.”(p. 99).
Imagine being held at the whim of a man with nothing to lose for more money than you ever had ..it is a horrible situation to be in and it was intense to read as both Simone and Jada deal with the real trauma of never seeing your home again, pain and even sexual assault.. The book read fast and Leon was interesting enough to keep reading and yay I even finished in like three days..hopefully this means I am back to my reading life love that this one was a smooth fun foray into my love of reading :) Let’s see what else I can read…
This is the second book I've read by this author (well 3 if you count the short story). After reading the first book, I sought out to read more by him. I really enjoyed this book. I figured it would end how it ended but it was still a great read
Definition of a page-turner! Sometimes was even too thrilling, that I had to pause and then come back. Really sharp writing, not a usual read for me but a welcome change. cw: for strong violence, goriness, murder, and s-xual assualt, CSA, kidnapping
DNF. Absolutely did not like this gentleman's writing style one bit. ... just not for me. 😳😔 especially the scene near the start involving the main character's little girl.. just.. ugh!
Corey who left his past life in the past, well he tried to anyway. But running into an old friend ended turning his whole world upside down. Leon, who Corey ran the streets with in his younger days, came to pay his old friend a visit. It was not a friendly visit by far. Corey not understanding why Leon thought he owed him totally confused him. But to find out his long term business partner was in the mix of things totally through him off guard. Todd, Corey's business partner was an obsessive gambler and stoop to the low by crossing Corey to be able to run with the big dogs. Setting Corey up, cornering him to have no choice but sell his part of the business if he ever wanted to see his family alive again. Without being able to get the cops involved; 1. Because of his past life with Leon, Leon could rat on him which could cause Corey double digits in prison. 2. He could not risk it, if he wanted to see his family alive again. So what is a desperate man that has been cornered do to save his family? Give it all he's got, that's what. If you're in to mystery and thrillers, I'm starting to believe that any book you pick up with the name Brandon Massey, you will never go wrong. 5*
Brandon Massey is absolutely fantastic. I've read several of his books, each one several times. He has an effortless way of gripping you and not letting go until long after you've finished the book. It felt like a thrilling movie, every time. Not only is he descriptive and relatable, but he is meticulous about his characters being well played out and understood before they continue with the actions of the story, which I feel we lose a lot of today. Sexy, fun, and thrilling, every time! Highly recommend any and all of his books.
This story is intense as they come. You really don't know what is going to happen to the character, or how things will change moment to moment. This is one of those rare books where your heart actually leaps from your chest. I still remember the plot, characters, and story, years later.
Corey Webb, family man, successful business man, respected in his community and church has some skeletons in his closet. They have been safely locked away until one day, when an old friend who holds the key comes back into his life, and wants what Corey has, all of it.
Good solid thriller. There are few twists to keep the reader guessing, but this book is pretty straight forward. Massey can tell a story, and can provide twists and some insights to the psyche of us all.
Cornered was definitely not Brandon Massey's best work. It was a pretty formulaic thriller that didn't contain any of the supernatural elements that first drew me to Massey. I read this book in about 4 hours. Nevertheless, it was a worthwhile read, but I know he can do a better job of entertaining me.
