Harmonica & Gig

Rate this book
“The rules of the qverse don’t apply when you’re dicing with its queen….”

Felix “Gig” McGuiggen is having one hell of a week. Arnold Lee, a mid-level programmer and all-around nobody, stabbed himself to death while jacked in to the virtual reality known as the “qverse.” Viger Singer, Lee’s employer, has offered Gig a million dollars to prove it was a suicide and not the first-ever murder by brain hack. From the moment Gig said yes, he’s been harassed, stalked, bugged, lied to, kidnapped, and nearly blown to smithereens. And that’s just outside the qverse.

On the upside, his partner in crime solving is his idol, the mysterious hack known only as “Harmonica.” But when Gig meets the legend at last, he isn’t the crusty old dinosaur Gig expected in fact, he’s a she, and she’s the woman of his most intricately detailed, impossible fantasies.

On the downside, Gig might not live long enough to do anything about it.

Well! I'm reviewing a few books for lilleypress.com. TOO FUN! My BFF Sherry will be having her book FORESIGHT published with them in Nov. It will then come out in paperback early next year. CONGRATS Sherry!

The first book I have read is Harmonica and Gig. This book is genre science fiction. Although there was no adult content listed, I believe it should have at least a mild adult content listing! I so did love qverse--a computer game/space where you can go and be anything/do anything. The story has a strong female lead (which i like in a story). I was not happy with the adult content, i found locations to be VERY confusing, and there were a few tech issues i figure should be solved by the time there is something like qverse around.

It took me quite a while to read the whole book. Not because i wasn't interested, but because i do not read on my computer. Currently, this book is an e-book. My favorite place to read is in my bedroom. If i had a 'kindle', perhaps this wouldn't be a problem.

This is a cyberpunk novel set in a future (about 50 years) which is quite plausible, with technology not too advanced. The characters are interesting and the story is well-paced, although I thought the ending was weak.

One of the better cyberpunk novels. The characters in H&G really shine. Highly recommended.
I got mine in paperback from the publisher website: www.dragonfallpress.com
