“Greenwood” is an adaptation of the ‘Gest of Robin Hood’, the earliest printed version of the timeless story of the outlaw of Sherwood Forest. This version provides a consistent rhyming version of the story, suitable for solo or group performance, as well as for the pleasure of the reader. It recovers the experience of listening to the Gest, as it was once sung or recited in hall or byre in medieval times. It reveals much about the origins of the legend of Robin Hood, including his identity as a yeoman, not as some rich nobleman fallen on hard times. “Greenwood” is the first of an anticipated series of works, featuring the author’s interests in poetry and folk song, and history.
