Muhammad of Mecca: Prophet of Islam By Elsa Marston

         By Dru Tillman

This story is about the origins of the monotheistic religion of Islam and how it came to be.  The main characters were the prophet of Muhammad, and his allies that aided him throughout his life.  The plot developed by Allah telling Muhammad that he needs to spread the religion and have people bring their faith into it.  'The angel called Muhammad the messenger of God.' (Marston page 26).

This story does not have a theme.  The delivery was excellent, it is very informing and went straight to the point.  The voice of the book is third person, so the author was the narrator.  The author did a good job on telling us how Islam originated and where it came from.  The book didn't really move me but the religion does and I'm still having deep thoughts of converting to Islam.  One thing I've learned is how much Muhammad went through to spread the religion and to have people's faith focused towards it.  But, I think the audience should do their research on the religion before reading this because whatever Elsa Marston wrote could've been false information.  'Muhammad sent 300 men to fight off the Quraysh who had 3,000 men'. (Marston page 66).  I believe that she exaggerated the battles between Muhammad and the Quraysh.

For this book, I will rate this a 3 out of 5.  I only rate this a 3 because I did my research on the religion and her input of Islam is different than the sources I've researched.  But, most of her information about the Prophet of Islam is correct and the way she delivered it was good.

Not my favorite genre, however, very interesting read if you ever wondered how Islam came to be. I requested this one on inter-library loan for suggested reading for the boys' medieval history studies. I learned a lot.
