In the "specialized" category, but well worth reading if you're interested. Wu shows how widespread Chinese immigration soon led to widespread stereotyping: the cringing, funny-talking servant, the opium addict, the sinister maze of Chinatown, the sinister Fu Manchu types, as well as the occasional well developed character. Depressing to realize how many of these cliches survived into my childhood in the 1960s.
