Pivoting on the Point of Return: Modern Goan Literature

Rate this book
An anthology of Goan writing, now in a revised edition. First published in the mid-1980s in the US. This is the third reprint of 'Goan A Modern Reader', but the first time it is available to readers in Goa. First published as the Journal of South Asian Literature, by the Michigan State University's Asian Studies Centre (Winter, Spring 1983), a second US edition was published in 1985. Nearly one generation after it was first published, this volume has something to say to Goans in Goa -- and all interested in Goan writing -- today. Includes an entirely new 12,300 word foreword by Peter Nazareth, who has had a long and useful tenure at the University of Iowa. This volume also takes a look at new Goan writers that grew after the first anthology was published. Undoubtedly, in a way, the original 1983 work was a dynamo for building the visibility of Goan writing (specially in English) globally. With its significant focus on the writing of expat Goans, this book underlines the reality that "people in exile will never give up hope of returning home to the very last day of their life," as the Iraqi poet in self-exile Saadi A Simawe said, when responding to this book. "Pivoting on the Point of Return" seeks to also captures the essence of exile, and expands the field of Goan literature into a universal realm.
