Holly Cathers’s world shatters when her parents are killed in a rafting accident. She is wrenched from her home in San Francisco and sent to Seattle to live with her aunt, Marie-Claire, and her twin cousins, Amanda and Nicole. But sorrow and grief soon give way to bewildered fascination as one by one, strange incidents begin to occur. Such as the fact that any desire Holly whispers to her cat seems to come true. Or the fact that a beloved friend is injured after a freak attack from a vicious falcon. Or the fact of an undeniably magnetic and familiar attraction to a boy Holly barely knows. Holly, Amanda, and Nicole are about to be launched into a dark legacy of secrets, alliances, and machinations, where ancient magics yield dangerous results, where possession is commonplace, and where reincarnation is taken for granted—and the three girls must take on roles in an intergenerational feud the like of which they could never have imagined.…

You know, I really don’t have any complaints about this book. It’s well-written, cohesive and the characters are relatable. I had a little trouble in the beginning trying to get used to the flipping of time periods but it’s something you get used to over the course of the book.

In terms of style, that was my biggest gripe. It’s a little much in the beginning of the book to be tossed about like that, mixed in with info-dumping in order to get the backstory of the witches and warlocks in. Considering that information was trickled throughout the book, I don’t think it was necessary to have it dumped on the reader all at once in the beginning.

And like I said, there were a lot of flashbacks. The only indication you’d get one is a triple space in the paragraphs. Jarring at first, maybe the first chapter or so but by the end of the second and into the third, I’d pretty much settled into the constant shifting and even came to like it. In all honestly, I was much more interested in the historical plot line than the current one.

What I like about it is it’s a dark book that isn’t filled with floofy Gossip Girls-type stuff. Nicole is probably the closest the book comes to that but even she levels out. It’s a little gritter than other like fantasy fare in my eyes (which are still kind of limited so take that with a grain of salt). Holly (the protagonist) loses her parents and best friend in a freak white water rafting accident. She was originally supposed to live with her dead friend’s mother but then she gets sick, hospitalized, and Holly has to stay with family in Seattle. Little does she know that her bloodline and that of her aunt’s lover have had a tendency to clash over the centuries and each want the other dead. Unfortunately only the lover, who’s an evil warlock, knows this. Until Holly and Amanda, and eventually Nicole, figure it out.

Aside from the use of the world warlock (which I can’t stand), it’s not as cheesy as it sounds. Not at all. I found it entertaining and a pretty fast read but aside from that, it really just wasn’t my thing. I kept aligning it with the likes of Charmed with all the fireballs and sisterly witchcraft and warlockiness and all of that. I’ve only seen a handful of episodes of Charmed but stuff like that just isn’t my thing. And neither is this book. It’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s just not something I’d read any more than once.

What bothered me though was really nothing to do with the story itself but the apology the authors make to the real witches that they garnered their research from. Why do they apologize? Because they found out through their research that the smoke and mirrors magic that exists in the book they wrote doesn’t actually exist (or they knew that all long and just decided to use it anyway regardless). It’s all a Hollywood manifestation that took the root of its work and twisted it to make it more interesting.

The thing is, I don’t think such showmanship is needed to make the story interesting. Why rely so heavily on people’s stereotypes of witches and magic in order to keep them entertained and interested when that’s not how it is and just as interesting of a story can be had from the real stuff? I was kind of put off by that. That the only way they could make the information they found interesting to young readers was to put glitter on it and make it shine. They obviously did their research but if they’d really done enough, they’d know that just such a story could exist without such fallacious mutations of the lore.

Hollywood witchcraft doesn’t do it for me to begin with so even without that teeny little introductory paragraph, I wouldn’t have been head over heels enthused about it anyway. But I think that little snippet pushed me over the edge because every time a piece of showboating magic came along, I couldn’t help but think ‘why? You now the truth and you know it can be scarier than these light shows. So why are you doing this?’

I don’t know. Maybe I’m a purist or fireworks just don’t impress me much. Or both. I thought it would have been a good book without the nonsensical stuff. With it in, I think it cheapened the story and could even be seen as insulting to think that this is what teens would rather read than the “real” stuff. Not all of them go ‘ooo, pretty lights!” and gawk. But despite it all, I can definitely see the appeal. If you're into Charmed or The Craft, you'll enjoy this book despite the showy magic it has. It is entertaining but th eonly reason I'll have a review for the second book in the series is because it's a two-in-one book.

bismillah..

"Throw that which is in thy right hand: Quickly will it swallow up that which they have faked what they have faked is but a magician's trick: and the magician thrives not, (no matter) where he goes." HQ: 20:69

Sebagaimana HQ dalam surat "THE DAYBREAK"
menjelaskan: I seek refuge with the Lord of the Dawn ~ From the mischief of created things; ~ From the mischief of Darkness as it overspreads; ~ From the mischief of those who practise secret arts; ~ And from the mischief of the envious one as he practises envy. (HQ: 113)

--------------------------------------------

Komenku, ceritanya sih bagus.
Cara penceritaannya aku suka. Maju mundur, bikin pusing... tapi keren. hahaha
Ngebayangin bikin cerita kayak gitu pasti susah.

Terjemahan juga bagus. Gaya bahasanya dapet. Tiap tokohnya punya ciri khas sendiri-sendiri. Walo agak garing pas bagian Tommy ;D (ini sih kesalahan penulis).

Tapi ada beberapa kesalahan nih... :D
Hal 108 paragraf terakhir g ada petik tutup kalimat :D
Hal 114 Kata Alis ditulis jadi Alias... Hehehehe
Hal 146 Paragraf pertama Font nya beda size... Kalo g diperhatiin emang g akan keliatan. Tapi tetep keliatan ama aku :P
Hal 154 Agak gak sreg sama terjemahan "Gadis itu panas." Hmmm kayaknya dari kalimat "That girl's Hot."
Mungkin kalimat aslinya: "Maybe we must kill her," --- her nya kenapa g ditulis jadi "Mungkin kita harus membunuh wanita itu,".
hal 226 Maksudnya Leo DiCaprio kan? ditulisnya cuma Le DiCaprio.
hal 228 ada kalimat "Aku ingin menjadi peran utama" ----- kenapa gak peran utama nya jadi Pemeran Utama? :P :P

Ada lagi sih. Tapi sudah ah...Segitu aja...
Bintang 4 kok tetep... Ceritanya bagus... :)
Covernya apa lagi... ;D

Kertasnya bagus. Sayang ga ada pembatas buku. Padahal berharapnya pembatasnya secantik covernya.

I gave this book so many chances to turn around but it just didn't. I started this one because I liked one of Holders other books but this one really bugged me.

I listened to it which may have been a hindered in this case but then again they made it into an audiobook.

It has historical flashback moments reminiscent of Beautiful Creatures but unlike Beautiful Creatures (which I also listened to)it didn't work. I was lost a lot, I it was really hard to follow. The perspective jumped around so that added to the confusion. There were a lot of times I thought about giving up but pushed through.

I eventually gave up on chapter 13 (not chapter 13 in the audio but she read the phrase "chapter 13" it was a couple full work days of listening to the book)

Besides being hard to follow there were a few parts that made me roll my eyes and I just thought were frustratingly cheesey. I really wish that I had clicked better with this book.

This book had a promising premise. Holly Cathers discovers the truth of her heritage when her parents and best friend die in a white water rafting accident and she moves to Seattle to live with a paternal aunt she never knew. It is there that she discovers that she is descendent from a very powerful line of witches. Her family's most fiercest enemy is the Devereaux family. They are warlocks. Unlike Holly's family who has lost their history, the Devereaux have continued to practice and are determined to eliminate Holly's family for all time. Of course, it isn't that simple. But once Holly is made aware of power, she comes into it very quickly, and then it is just a matter of the past repeating itself, which might have been fine but I didn't like the back and forth in time and I began to dislike all the characters. I also didn't like the reader, Cassandra Morton. She sounded like she was 12. But I will be back for more since I have the first three books in the series.

Ini bukan Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West-nya Maguire, bukan juga Wicked Lovely-nya Melissa Marr.

Entahlah.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Seventeen-year-old Holly Cathers is devastated when her parents and best friend are killed during a whitewater rafting trip. Sent to live with her aunt and two cousins, Holly has trouble accepting her situation, however the alluring young man Jer Devereaux certainly sparks her interest. Although drawn to Jer, Holly’s equally repelled by his father and brother. Compounding her strange new life are the visions that somehow involve her and Jer stretching far back in time. But these are only the beginning of the revelations Holly discovers about herself, her family, and how an ugly, horrific past has caught up with them.

Witch is the first installment in the young adult fantasy series, Wicked, and it’s thoroughly entertaining. One feels sympathy for Holly, and because of the multiple viewpoints, the reader knows far more about the danger Holly and her family are in than she does. One of the likeable aspects, and a common trait in YA fantasies, is the growing confidence Holly has in herself as she identifies her enemies and develops her skills as a witch.

The evil ones in this book have no redeeming qualities, which makes them rather two dimensional, but they do have major magical skills which adds to the suspense and horror. Now that Holly understands what’s at stake and the power she holds, it will be interesting to see what she does with it next.

well, saya kurang menikmati ceritanya.

*masih wondering kenapa yg nerbitin pertama kali "an imprint of blablabla children publishing*

I got this book off of bookoutlet.com since it sounded like an interesting witch read. Unfortunately it was not that interesting. The overall concept is a good idea. I love how there is a witch feud going back centuries, but how it was developed was problematic for me. There were very odd time jumps in Holly's story and I didn't like how spread out everything was. Also, some things weren't explained that great in my opinion or maybe I missed some things while reading. I got confused about some of the things going on. This book just wasn't entertaining for me. I found it really difficult to get through. I got the bind up of the first two books, but I was only able to get through the first book. The characters in this book were boring and very flat. I found the side characters more entertaining than the main characters.

One of the worst storytelling I’ve ever seen. It’s not coherent, everyone’s dying left and right and it’s never actually explained what the Black Fire is (unless it’s just fire, in which case really fucking boring and underwhelming). Overall there are so much better books out there, don’t waste your time!

Also if you want to include another language in your book maybe make sure that there’s no spelling mistakes? Because some of the words used were not even actual ones.

Eddie and Kialish deserved more screen time 😔

Meh!

I find this continued novel to have the same plot, which for the Cahors witches to end the vendetta and the warlocks (Michael and Eli) to get revenge. This author uses the same flash forward and flash back to the past method in her narration of the story. There are a lot of “prayers” and “spells” at the beginning of each chapter; also each chapter has a specific title such as: Blood, Mead, Dark, or Red Moon.

I think I will give this a middle score of 3 stars. While I do like the premise of the story (star-crossed lovers who gets reincarnated mixed with witchcraft), I still cannot get pass the really awful editing, grammar, and the very jarring jumps in the story.

I can forgive a few grammatical error here and there. I am not a native English speaker by any means, it is only my second language, but the errors in the novel was atrocious! Why didn't anyone proofread this before it was published?! There were times when proper punctuation and capitalization were not observed, some instances where run-on sentences were abundant, but what I couldn't really forgive was the jump cuts.

By jump cuts, I am talking about suddenly introducing a scenario and then jumping on a totally different one without first finishing the previous. Like when Jer and Holly met. I believe that they had like 3 interactions tops then suddenly they were MADLY IN LOVE with one another. Yes, I get that they had the souls of Isabeau and Jean in them, but still, that is taking instalove too far!

Like when the zombie creatures were about to attack Tommy. It was so random. I mean yes, I get it that Michael was trying to use Tommy to force them out or something, but that scene was cut too short! What happened to them explaining to Tommy that hey, we're witches and this family is out to get us yada yada? What was his reaction? Did he believe them at once? Was he doubtful?

Also sometimes the plot was just so flimsy. Like when Michael wanted to kill Holly and he killed Marie-Claire instead. I mean, that is just dumb. So you mean you are this powerful warlock and you can't even kill your intended target? And why did he get into so much trouble to have Holly come to Seattle when he was going to kill her anyway?

This novel had so much promise but the problem was the execution. There are two authors in this book, maybe that was the problem? Maybe they were writing this alternately and the story suffered because of that, because of conflicting ideas? It made me so sad because this book could have been great if only the author made everything very clear, was more careful in writing, and took into account how everything will translate.

I was not a fan of this book. The writing itself left something to be desired. There was less storyline and seemed more like here's a plot point, here's a plot point, and not much else in between. There were multiple times that I had to re-read a passage, paragraph, or even sentence and still didn't understand what it meant. I guess you were supposed to infer things based on what was there...? I'm not sure. I just kept pushing through, hoping it would get better. I liked the last 30 or so pages. The beginning was definitely rough, too many people and time frames, I had no idea what was going on or who was who and literally wrote a list so I knew who was who. I own the series (I actually read Wicked: Witch & Curse, Books 1&2) so I'm going to continue to read them and hope it gets better (I didn't like the first Twilight book either, but enjoyed the rest of the series). Full disclosure, I have read the first 40 pages of the second book and really liked it, so maybe I just had to get through the background building to enjoy it.

All in all, I would say probably skip it. The cover is cool and that's probably what originally drew me to it, but the story isn't that great.

This isn't a bad book, but I was pretty meh over it. I think it's just that I've read this type of plot so many times by now that the clichés and tropes are just irritating me.

I did like the bits of history scattered throughout. I also like the fact that the past life families are both monstrous. When something like this is written, there's a 'good' family (the hero's ancestors) and the 'bad' one, but nope. Not here. Both of those families were terrible and I wanted to see both of them burn. It's one way trope that the authors avoided so well.

The biggest problem for me was the resolution of the plot. All of the sudden, every character just knows everything because the plot needs to move forward. There was no reason that made sense, which was annoying. It also went all Charmed in the last (rushed) scenes, which was an awkward change of tone.

This book really had the potential to be good. The problem is the jumping around. If it just jumped between time from Holly to Isabeau that would be fine. However, this jumps between several characters. Some in the present and some in the past. This makes it terribly hard to follow the story. Plus there is no easy transition from one person/time to the other most of the time. This book really fell short for me. I am really disappointed because it sounded so interesting.

It was okay but it felt like even the author didn't know the age rating they were going for. Sometimes I felt like I was reading a preteen novel, sometimes even I was bored as it droled on about marriage issues and family fueds etc. A 9-12 year old would enjoy half of it, a 30+year old would enjoy the other, and I guess as I'm between the ages I must be the target audience? I have the second book, but if they didn't come as a set I wouldn't have bothered finding it.

I remember reading this book in high school- I remembered bits and pieces and decided to read it again. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s got a lot of witchy stuff. I do think the author should’ve leaned into all the historical characters being unlikeable because of their terrible deeds. I think the ending was a bit rushed, but it’s obviously set up to have a sequel. I do plan reading the series! (It’s very of its time- early 2000s)

DNF.

Ugh. I wanted to like this but the writing is so confusing. Multiple timelines, multiple POVs.

-two rival witch clans who are like the French Montagues and Capulets or Hatfields and McCoys
-orphan
-twins
-surprisingly bloody and gorey for a YA series
-sex mentioned multiple times (off page)
-cartoon villian warlock
-published in 2002

I thought it was pretty good and went really fast especially considering its a teen book.I'm 25 and I still really enjoyed it. there is a slight genericness I suppose, but it's still a really good story and was definitely successful at holding my interest.

This was a re-read
I first read this series when I was twelves and obviously my love for it isn’t a great as it once was. I still enjoyed the re-read and plan to finish re-reading the whole series for the nostalgia and also so I can avoid reading the book I actually need to.
