Jonathan London is the author of several celebrated children's books. His commitment to honoring the wonders of the natural world has been lauded by readers and critics alike. He is the author of more than 70 children's books, many of which are about nature. He's also the author of the popular Froggy series. He lives in Graton, California with his wife and two sons.
The character development in FGD (froggy gets dressed) is absolutely pristine. The change froggy undergoes throughout this gripping story kept me reading I couldn't put it down. I read FGD every morning before I myself get dressed, just in case I forget anything. The interplay between froggy and his mother was amazing as well. A real pageturner. Truly a masterpiece of literature, FGD kickstarted the graphic novel revolution and every other writer is still trying to catch up with London and Remkiewicz. Now I'm off to review another book, flop flop flop.
Kind of boring. He just gets dressed and then his mother makes him realize he has forgotten to put on some item of clothing, this happens a few times. I wonder why Froggy always forgets to put on his underwear, lol!
The first of the popular series of picture-books from author Jonathan London and illustrator Frank Remkiewicz featuring this winsome ranine hero, Froggy Gets Dressed sees the eponymous Froggy waking up in the middle of the winter, when he should still be hibernating. Despite his mother's insistence that he go back to bed, he decides to get dressed, and try out the snow outside his window. Unfortunately, he keeps forgetting various articles of clothing, in his haste...
Froggy's antics will keep children entertained, as he dresses and undresses, dresses and undresses, while the colorful artwork will keep their attention. I can see Froggy Gets Dressed working very well as a read-aloud selection at story-hour, or as a bedtime book in the winter. I don't know that I enjoyed it enough to hunt down any of the other books in the series, but I'm glad to discover what they're "all about," just the same.
Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London, illustrated by [author; Frank Remkiewicz] is one of the funniest of the Froggy series. Waking up during winter, Froggy wants to get dressed and play with his friends, although his mother tells him it's too cold. Every time Froggy gets outside, his mother calls "Frrrooggyy!" to remind him of something he forgot to wear. Froggy hops back into the house, gets undressed, redresses with the missing article of clothing, then hops back outside. After his mother calls to tell him forgot his underwear, Froggy is so exhausted that he climbs back into bed to sleep for the rest of winter.
The text is quite funny, especially the unique sounds made as Froggy gets dressed, such as zoop, zup, zat, swit, zum, zip, zut, and zap! I love calling making the mother's voice calling "Frrrooggyy!" and being cranky Froggy saying "Wha-a-a-a-a-t?" Kids always laugh when Froggy forgets to put on, and his mother says - UNDERWEAR! Among the items Froggy puts on are socks, boots, hat, scarf, mittens, pants, shirt and underwear. Active verbs are used, such as tug, tie, snapped, buttoned, zipped and pulled. There is lots of repetition, especially in listing clothing, as Froggy dresses and undresses. This works as a beginning/transitional reader. It's a great read-aloud.
The cartoonlike illustrations are very funny and match the text well. This also works as a flannel board story.
A real favorite for toddler and preschool storytimes.
For ages 2 - 6, frogs, clothing, humor, sequences, winter themes, and fans of Jonathan London and Frank Remkiewicz.
Will's review last night: this was a really boring story. All he did was get dressed! I like the baseball one much better." Every series has a bomb....guess this one is it.
In this series book, it’s all about Froggy getting dressed to go play in the snow. This book has a lot of repetition which is good for beginning readers. This book is for K-2. This book could be a good resource for the classroom as a series book that gets kids interested in books.
While this book has some repetitive stuff going on in it, I think the funniest part is when he forgets to put on his underwear. Not that I'm immature, just that this was always the funniest part in the book for us when mom read this to my older brother and I when we were kids.

Ok, got it from a local library. Not sure why Perry doesn't rant about the ending. I surely did not appreciate it. Good book until that point, though.
If I borrow this from MORE, do I read the very same book that Michael Perry read and reread to his daughter, as reported in Roughneck Grace?
Found, via Google Search, here: "The first (?) and one of the best Froggy books. Froggy wants to go out and play in the snow, but everytime he gets out and starts making a snowball, his mom calls him back inside because he's forgotten some article of clothing. When she reminds him he forgot to put his underwear on, he turns more red than green. Interesting detail: when Mom calls out "FRRROOGGYY!!", the letters of his name have the color pattern of whatever article of clothing she wants him to put on. Cute. (B-)"
Froggy looks outside his window! Snow Snow he said "I want to play in the snow!!". His mother told him to go back to bed and that frogs were suppose to sleep all winter until the snow is melted. But he didn't care what momma had to say. He puts on his socks, pulled on his boots, put on his hat, tied on his scarf, tugged on his mittens and flopped outside into the snow. But froggy forgot to put something on... He forgot his pants he was so excited. So he went back inside and started the process all over again. Froggy kept forgetting clothes, he then forgot his shirt and coat, so he flopped back inside took off all this clothing and re got dressed. Finally after changing multiple times, froggy says i'm too tired and goes back to sleep. Goodnight froggy. The End
I would use this in my classroom in elementary education. I would ask them questions how they get ready in the morning. Also ask them if mom and dad help or do they do it all by themselves.
This is a great vocab book that uses a lot of repetition - I remember from when I was little that repetition in picture books is far from boring! It's hard reading it as an adult though. Still, Froggy is quite a cute character who keeps forgetting to put on various items of clothing and has to go back inside, take it all off and start again - until he's too tired to continue and goes back to sleep, which makes his mother smile. ;)
It's also a good book for teaching kids what they need to wear to go outside in cold weather - the scarf, the mittens, the hat etc. You could probably turn the ordeal of getting your kid dressed for a cold day into a froggy game! That'd be fun.
My 5 year old liked this, but didn't think it was fair that Froggy didn't even get to really play outside. Illustrations were cute, story line is cute. The only thing I didn't like is that it's one of those books that has printed 'sound effect' type words. I don't like feeling obligated to do sound effects especially since often the way the sound effect is written doesn't really match how I'd imagined the sound effect. Read sound effects begrudgingly anyways.
This is my favorite of all the Froggy books. It's a hit every time when I read it for story time. I just love how he's so eager to get outside to play that he forgets to put essential items on. Recommended!
I've been reading this one to kids before I had my own and it's always been a fun read.
Froggy decides he wants to go play in the snow, despite his mother asking him to stay in bed. So he goes about getting ready and heads out the door. But...silly Froggy has forgotten a few things.
The humor and pictures of this book were enjoyable for me and for my young sibling. I enjoyed the reputation in the book where my sibling was able to understand what was going on and interact with me. The onomatopoeia was fun to do; I would usually think I would be uncomfortable to read the “znap!” and “flop flop flop!” of the book, although the giggles and smiles were worth it. I did think the characters were relatable with a caring mother and her son that needs more attention and care than he thinks.
Froggy and his family were all sleeping for in the winter it is their time for hibernation. Froggy woke up from the cold and was ecstatic for the snow. His mother insisted that he goes back to bed, however Froggy resists and puts on his clothes to head outside to play. While outside, you hear his mother say “Did you forget to put something on?” multiple times and multiple times he is missing pieces of clothing for him to go back inside, take off most of his clothes, put all the clothes back on (including the one he is missing) to go back outside and the story gets repeated. In the end, Froggy gets too tired to continue to stay outside, so he goes back to bed.
I did think the pictures in the book were a bit cheesy, but it definitely helps the story become more playful and enjoyable. This book was fun, relatable, and easy. It introduces some questions that students could ask, like “why do frogs sleep in the winter?”. This book will keep students engaged with the words that are sounds, and then sounding like a mother as we yell “FRRROOGGYY!”.
Froggy is supposed to be hibernating, but he wants to play in the snow. Froggy puts on his socks (zoop!), his boots (zup!), his hat (zat!), his scarf (zwif!), and his mittens (zum!). Then flop flop flop he runs out to play. No sooner is he outside than his mother is calling for him. (He's forgotten his pants.) Froggy goes back in, undresses, puts on his pants (zip!), and puts all the other clothes back on.
This cycle repeats because Froggy has also forgotten his shirt and coat—and then it happens again when it is revealed that he forgot his underwear! But that last time, after pulling on his (long) underwear, he is just too tired and decides to hibernate after all.
The dressing and undressing antics are what makes Froggy Gets Dressed so funny, and they provide wonderful opportunities to practice labeling the many action words for dressing and undressing. Every stage of the process is illustrated.
I love the nonsense words all starting with Z as sound effects. It's great practice for kids who are pre-readers to sound these out, and they are helpfully the only words italicized.
--- I review books for children from the perspective of a parent of kids with autism. The review above is part of a longer post on books about clothing and dressing: https://www.lineupthebooks.com/dressing/
A high energy frog named Froggy wants to go outside and play in the snow despite his mother telling him to sleep through the winter. He puts on his socks, boots, hat, scarf, and mittens but his mother tells him he forgot various items of clothing. He comes back inside multiple times to fix the clothing issue and add things like underwear. Eventually he is dressed but too tired to play outside in the snow with his friends so he goes back to sleep.
I liked the illustrations and the story of this book. I like that each item froggy puts on makes a distinct sound like zoop or zum. The fact his clothes do not match makes the story even more fun and colorful. This would be a great book to have in the classroom library and home library.
This book would be great to teach young students how to get dressed in the morning and the importance of clothing to keep our bodies warm. I would read this story to students at carpet time and give them it to read independently for a good laugh. This story could also teach a lesson about how the order of things that we do matters.
Froggy wakes up and sees snow! he wants to go play, so he gets dressed. Each time he goes out, "Frrrooggyy!" Call's his mother. "Wha-a-a-a-a-t?" yells froggy. Each time his mother asks if he forgot to put something on, sure enough, Froggy forgets so he hops back to his house to fix his problem. After forgetting to put on his underwear, Froggy decides he's too tired and crawls back into bed to hibernate.
It's a super sweet simple book. It's repetitive, and has some funny moments. I'm sure kids love Froggy, but I'm not a huge fan of this book. Once again, there's nothing inherently wrong with it, and it's a good book for simple reading. It's just not my favorite book
I think if I were to use this in my classroom it would be a time filler book for the winter. Maybe I could use it to teach a little bit about hibernation, but I don't think I would assign work to go along with this book. At the very least, I would have it in my classroom library for kids to pick out for quiet reading time.
This fun, humorous, and playful book by Jonathan London is about a little frog who keeps forgetting his clothes. The relationship between he and his mother can be fun to read aloud, and children can be easily engaged. There are lots of written sound effects which can also make for a fun read-aloud. There is also multiple instances of repetition, and a consistent pattern forms as Froggy goes back and forth while playing the snow. There is a small amount of words on each page, and the story is substantially told through pictures. It is easy to understand what is happening just by looking at the colorful, and bold pictures. Froggy is a character that most children will love and find hilarious.
This book also can be used as a learning guide for children. Not only can it help them read, but the colorful and detailed pictures help point out different articles of clothing. This may be helpful with very young children who are just learning. This book is definitely one of my favorites, and the other "Froggy" books are equally as entertaining!
In a group of three picture books, I liked this one the best and my daughter liked it second-best. So, that's enough to choose this one for my review.
The FROGGY books are a series of books based on FROGGY who engages in a variety of activities. What's great about them is their simplicity. For instance, in this one, Froggy simply has the desire to get dressed but something always gets in the way. Through this pattern of desire and thwarted desire the book provides a humorous story that works at both parent and kid levels.
Another reason I particularly liked this one is that my 4-year-old is particularly interested in all things hibernation. That comes into play in this story, which attracted her attention, along with the snowman in the background laughing at Froggy's ongoing comedy of errors:)
It's fun to invite children to do actions with this story as they get dressed with Froggy -- putting on socks, boots, hat, scarf, and mittens (all with sound effects and repeated often, forwards and backwards, throughout). Children also enjoy slapping their thighs (if seated) or jumping (if standing) as Froggy "flop, flop, flops" outdoors and repeating after the performer his mother's loud call (with their hands cupped to their mouths) "FRRROOGGYY!" and Froggy's reply, "Wha-a-a-a-a-t?". They get a kick that Froggy has forgotten his PANTS, his COAT, and even his UNDERWEAR (which is sure to elicit some laughs).
What adult and child wouldn't relate to this hilariously fun repetitive action story?
