Eleanor has always been looked on askance as 'the bossy American' by London society, the very antithesis of British virtue and propriety. Now, at the death of her husband, she has been appointed trustee to his estate, and the proverbial fur is flying. Infuriated, her mother-in-law sends Lord Anthony Neale to put an end to Eleanor's nefarious gold-digging ways.
Anthony and Eleanor clash immediately. He thinks she's a siren who uses beauty to entrap men. She thinks he's a haughty, cold English snob. Despite their initial misgivings, they are increasingly drawn to each other. But someone is threatening Eleanor, and as the break-ins and other malicious activities begin to pile up—it's Anthony who tops the list of probable suspects!

Candace Camp seems to be very hot or miss for me. This started off really strong with a startling beginning and a tough but original heroine who lived realistically by her own rules. However, once the hero was on the scene, he was super overbearing and her strength faded. They had chemistry that I didn’t see and a kiss that didn’t make sense to me and I just felt disconnected from the story. Combine that with the potential for interesting side characters who weren’t fleshed out enough so they seemed like cutouts and a romance pairing I couldn’t connect with and I set this aside. As I’ve said, camp has some excellent work out there, but this one just didn’t resonate with me (though it might for others). If you like mysteries, opera, and hate to love, perhaps this would work better for you.
Well, no doubt about it, this one comes AFTER An Independent Woman. I can't for a moment think why it's listed as the first in this series here in Goodreads and on Camp's own website. In the previous book Eleanor and her relatively newlywed husband are introduced, and they leave for Italy so that he can regain his health. This one begins just after his death in Italy. So it's a no-brainer. As I said, the only quandary is why this is listed as #1. As for the book itself, the shift from strong, independent, unemotional Eleanor to a woman madly in love for the first time is a bit tricky, but it's not unsuccessful. The mystery is not a surprise when it is resolved although there were enough potential red herrings for one to feel smug at having guessed right. Did think Eleanor and her guy were a bit long in figuring out where the list was hidden.
3.5 stars. Light easy breezy read that didn't make me want to reach in and strangle any of the characters. I even came to appreciate Honeria and kept expecting her to come behind the bad guys with a parasol or gun for some reason.
I found I related so much with the heroine and really appreciated her personality. But, aside from immediate and overpowering attraction for each other and eventual realization of each other's good points (from other people) the main couple didn't really talk to each other about their pasts or hopes and dreams and things they've overcome. That and the abrupt ending kept this from being a full 4. But still fun read.
Gostei imenso deste livro.
i didn't quite understand who the title was referring to in this book. it certainly wasn't the hero. he was known as someone not to cross, but not "dangerous"...as the title suggests. the background murder story kind of sucked. plus, there was a lot of music jargon that i was clueless to understand.
...I would definitely recommend this sweat romance. It is not a modern day contemporary erotic piece with every detail of its indiscretions finely painted.…

This was a fun, sexy, passionate, mysterious story. I read this in a day so I was hooked to say the least. It kept me entertained the whole way.
Eleanor has married into a family that doesn’t want to see her in. She married Edmund, Lord Scarborough, but he is sickly and has consumption. She moves him to Naples after they marry but that doesn’t save him. He leaves his estate to his cousin and most of his money to his sister, which his wife would manage. His mother, Lady Honoria, will have none of the that. So she sends her brother, Lord Anthony Neale, to talk to to her and get the majority of the will. However, Neale saw her a year ago and was struck with her beauty and has wanted her since which is why he has stayed away. Now he has to see her again after a year but he can’t possibly feel the same still right? Wrong. Their passion is intense. Eleanor and Anthony despise each other but that dislike soon melts every time they are in each other’s arms. They decide to work together to find out how Edmund really died too. So you read about secret societies in Naples.
It was a great story and had action and adventure all through it. A good read over all.
Not one of my favourites by this author but still has enough to keep interest to the end. I enjoy this authors writing and her humour just wish her books were a little more meaty or contained a little more of a social commentary. Good for escapism but do not teach how to make the world a better place.
A nice romance - the initial hostility not overdone - good main characters. The whiney mother is just annoying, the other secondaries bland, the end however is almost farcical despite the dead bodies. The book deserved better, but still a good read.
Candace Camp scores a hit with this tale of Anthony and Eleanor.
If you like a Recency novel that has humor, mystery, intrigue and steamy romance, this is for you. It's a full length novel that will keep you entertained from the opening sentence.
I am now currently reading Candace Camps "A Dangerous Man". This book is about a woman named Eleanor who is wrongly accused of wanting to mary Neale's nephews money. When in truth she married him because of his all the pressures from his family. But when he dies suddenly in a boating accident all fingers point to Eleanor as the killer of their beloved nephew and son. Eleanor comes back to England to find out that someone has been following her around. She is worried because she has to go read Edmund's will to his family so she can get her priorities straight. So she goes to read the will and give Edmund's ashes to his family so they can put him in the family crypt. While there she stay's with Neal. During her stay there a stranger breaks into her room and steals a necklace that Edmund gave to her. The next day she travels back home she doesn't think the event's are series at first so she searches the house to make sure Edmund didn't hide anything worth a lot of money. Little did she know that she was about to find herself in a most dangerous situation.
To find out more read the book I recommend it to anyone willing to read it.

Maybe 1 and a half stars? I honestly have no idea how I feel about this book. It wasn't terrible but the "mystery" is boring; not to mention, if you've read one story like this, you can probably tell who the villain is the second he's introduced. The basis of their hatred is Neale hating Eleanor for reasons that aren't fully explained and are basically contrived anyway since he knows he can't take his sister seriously, and her hating him for judging her. I hate this trope. Neale also spends a majority of the book being an ass, making it impossible for me to ever warm up to him. His sister is just painfully over the top.
Usually I love Candace Camp's books, however this was the first one I got a little bored with. I enjoyed solving the mystery, but I couldn't figure out why the two main characters loved each other. Also there were long passages where the characters reflected on their feelings that probably could have been shorter or cut completely. This being said I devoured this book in two days.
My first Camp book and while I found nothing wrong with her writing I just was plain underwhelmed. I am not a huge mystery fan so that element of the plot was lost on me. I indeed did like the h/h but found them forgettable and utterly unremarkable. I know many who love Camp so I will give her another try as I said the writing was good the story and characters were just blah for me.
read one of Ms Camp's novels, you've read them all
I made the mistake of reading "A Dangerous Man" right after reading "The Hidden Heart". They were so similar that I could predict when and how the H and h would have sex and who the villain was.
It was a pretty interesting story, and I loved the strong female lead. The pace of the story was a bit slow and the story line itself came off as if it was trying too hard to be twisted or complicated. Overall, it was an entertaining read.
