One Step Beyond is a fast, fun and introspective read that captures the spirit and mood of Westside Los Angeles in the early 1980s. The atmosphere shifted from 70s, good-time, party-rock-heshers, to the glitzy, manic, punk new-wavers of the 80s. Mike Pearson chronicles this era of sudden and intense change as he tells the story of his teen years. Pearson's insight and humor makes for a highly entertaining and compulsively readable memoir that drops you straight into the teen, pop culture world of beach city Los Angeles in the 1980s.
Despite editing problems and awkward writing at times, this book captures what it was like to have lived in the Palisades during the early-mid 80s and fills in a lot of blanks regarding what was going on. The only book I've seen about the Palisades from that period, looking forward for more to come!
