The summary called it a children’s book. It’s an ageless book that simply and wonderfully unfolds the transformation of innocence into adulthood. I really liked the story. It’s the kind of narrative that keeps you guessing about the end but leaves you wishing it hadn’t come so soon!!!

Good survival story for children. Brian Robeson is a thoughtful boy who, after seeing the pilot of his small bush plane suffer a deadly heartattack, manages to figure out how and where to (crash land. The rest of the book keeps you engaged with his thought processes, and with his adventures in the forest. Stories about being capable and in charge always hooked me when I was a child.

Students (4th grade) loved this coming-of-age adventure book and so did I. I read it to them. Some went ahead and got a copy to read because hearing it read aloud was too slow! The adult theme of adultery was there for those who "got it" and identified with the hero's dilemma. For others, that part of the story did not attract their attention. The excitement of "man/boy vs nature" is timeless.

A pretty good book about a 13 year old boy who survives in the Alaskan wilderness.
I didn't feel the pieces about his mother's perceived infidelity moved the story forward and I felt it made an otherwise good book a bit controversial.

Read this as an audio on our MI trip a couple of years ago. The boys loved it as much as the adults. Riveting and very well read so that you feel like you are right w him getting stung by the porcupine and suffering when he eats inedible berries after starving!

I think this beautiful story resonates with so many teenagers because it is a physical expression of what we all seem to go through in our heads at our time in our lives.... you know searching... self determination, realiannce in a harsh world. a great read.

What a great book! Ellie was assigned this book for school. The main character Brian was stranded in the wilderness for almost 2 months. The story does a great job of describing his struggles to survive. Great for for 5th graders - and adults too!
