This is a collection of all the words of Jesus recorded in the Gospels. The author, for ease of use, has arranged them under headings of his own devising. He presents his book as a guide and tool for Christians (and possibly others) who want to know what Jesus had to say about issues of faith and morality.
So far so handy. I can certainly see this as a useful quick reference for the preacher, and as a reminder to the forgetful believer. It could also be used an introduction to Jesus’ teaching for new Christians or those interested to know what he had to say. I have no beef at all with the core content of the book. It does what it says on the tin, and the introductory essays are pretty straightforward, too.
And yet, it makes me feel slightly uneasy. I think it’s the presentation. It has been packaged to look like a self-help book, and it’s presented as one: “Everything Jesus Said about You, Your life, and Everything Else” declares the cover. Now, I must be honest and admit that I am guilty of what CS Lewis calls the personal heresy: I am put off by the author biography in the back cover.
Scott and his business partners, having learned ‘the laws of life’ from the book of Proverbs (a previous study) “Built more than a dozen multi-million-dollar companies…Scott is a popular international speaker on the subjects of personal and professional achievement and the application of biblical wisdom to every area of life.”
I’m not the kind of Christian who thinks that you’re not doing it right unless you’re miserable and downtrodden, but somehow I can’t see the similarity between the life of Jesus, and aspiring to be a multi-millionaire businessman. I can’t reconcile Jesus’ call for us to wash each other’s feet with Scott’s ‘look what you can get out of life if you do it right’ approach. Jesus, Christians believe, did it absolutely right – I wonder how many international companies would employ him as a keynote speaker at their sales conference?
Buy it by all means, it could be useful, but it can’t replace reading the gospel – including all the messy bits that aren’t quite clear. In the end, what grates with me is the idea that we can ‘use’ the gospel as just another tool for riddling the tasty bits out of life’s pie.

***This amazing resource belongs with every Bible purchase!***

Steven K. Scott's life-transforming resource, The Greatest Words Ever Spoken has the "power to transform hateful hearts...change minds driven by greed...and alter lives ruled by arrogance." In this compilation of "pure, undiluted words" and statements Jesus' words inspire hope in hopeless situations, stir joy in broken hearts and replace "paralyzing fear" with His supernatural peace. That makes this book a valuable, one-of-a-kind resource.

It isn't a quick read and it isn't a book designed to be read cover-to-cover. Instead it's an alphabetized reference of every word, statement and lesson Jesus spoke and taught organized into nine general categories and 220 associated topics that provide "instant access to the counsel of Christ."

When Dr. Gary Smalley, one of Scott's friends, realized what Scott had created, he said, "This is a treasure chest of answers, promises, inspiration, encouragement, love, faith, and power for living that no Christian home should be without."

WaterBrook Press agreed and published this special "red-letter" edition in 2014 with Jesus' words in red and verses that provide context in black. From the table of contents to the New Testament scripture indexes and alphabetized subject index, this user friendly resource "is a quick way to find what Jesus had to say" on individual topics and everyday issues.

I especially liked…Full Review: http://www.examiner.com/list/the-grea...

The Greatest Words Ever Spoken has the power to become a life transforming book because the words that Jesus spoke were completely transforming to so many people. The author, Steven K. Scott, has organized all the words that Jesus spoke in the New Testament (red type in most Bibles) into over 200 different topics.

While this is not the kind of book that I will just sit down and read all the way through (although you certainly could do that), I think it will be a great resource to me when studying a particular topic. What better source is there than Jesus for any topic?

For example it's very interesting to see exactly what Jesus said about how to start a relationship with God or obtain a deeper relationship with Him. Or, you can research what Jesus said about Heaven, the Holy Spirit, Angels, Satan and so much more. There are 20 different sections to cover just the things that Jesus spoke about Himself (e.g., His identity, His mission, His prayers, etc.).

Thank you Steven Scott for your diligent work in organizing and categorizing the greatest words that were ever spoken. This will be a wonderful resource for so many.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Blogging For Books program from WaterBrook Multnomah in exchange for this fair and unbiased review.

I was drawn to this book because I wanted to concentrate on what Jesus said. It was a great book for doing so. The book is divided into subjects and since so many of the subjects overlap with Jesus’ words, there was a lot of repetition. Even within the same subject there was repetition because of the 4 gospels although Steve Scott did not always use everything from each gospel. This repetition was not a bad thing because I wanted to be immersed with Jesus’ words and that is exactly what this accomplished. It actually instilled in me a desire to spend even more time on what Jesus had to say and how we can apply that to our lives today. Jesus’ words are challenging, straightforward at times and sometimes hard to understand but on the whole I think we like to quote his sayings which bring us comfort and stay away from what hits hard and exposes our sin. For instance the one section was on the commands of Christ, so while reading I decided to make a list and it’s quite a list. This list is not intended to be complete, and some of it definitely needs to be defined or interpreted (I made a few notes in parenthesis) but it’s rather humbling to just hear it directly how it is stated:

Commands of Christ:
Repent.
Have faith in God.
Stop doubting and believe.
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.
See to it that the light within you is not darkness.
Be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
Do not let your heart be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in Me.
Follow Me.
Remain in Me.
Ask, seek, knock.
Seek God’s Kingdom and God’s righteousness, (top priority of what to seek)
Break bread, in remembrance of Me.
Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.
Love one another.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.
Take care of and feed My sheep.
Work for food that endures.
Open your eyes and look at the fields. (Be aware of possibilities to share Jesus)
Let your light shine before men.
Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning.
Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.
Give to the one who asks you.
When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
Give a tenth to the Lord. But don’t forget the more important matters of the law… justice, mercy, and faithfulness.
Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourself that will not wear out, a treasure in Heaven that will not be exhausted.
Rejoice and be glad (even when persecuted).
Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
Do not resist an evil person.
Don’t worry about how you will defend yourselves. (When persecuted or brought before rulers on account of your faith)
Settle matters quickly with your adversary (before you get to court).
If a brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he doesn’t listen to you, take 2 people with you. If he doesn’t listen to them, take it to the church. If he doesn’t listen to the church, treat him as a pagan.
Forgive seventy-seven times (or 70 x 7).
Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.
If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.
Do not commit adultery.
Looking at a woman lustfully is committing adultery.
Divorce, except for marital unfaithfulness, is adultery.
If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away.
If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.
Do not swear at all. (Let your yes be yes and your no no.)
Do not worry.
Do not be afraid.
Do not judge. Do not condemn.
Do not set your heart on what you eat or drink.
Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees.
Be on your guard against all kinds of greed.
Don’t do your acts of righteousness before men to be seen by them.
Out of the heart comes evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, arrogance and folly. These are what make you unclean.
Clean the inside first, then the outside will be clean.
Pray, believing God will answer.
Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest field.
Be perfect.
Keep watch for Christ’s return. Be on guard. Be alert.
Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
When you have done everything you were told to do, say, “We are unworthy servants, we have only done our duty.

What Jesus said about His commands:
If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.
Whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
It will be good for you if Christ finds you living obediently when He comes.
Everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded.

Three caveats: 1) Do not read cover-to-cover. The organization means that consecutive sections often have high overlap, compounded by the fact that some stories are in multiple gospels. Use it as a reference. 2) If you are not an Evangelical Christian, go ahead and skip the author commentary. 3) I think he includes things that don't actually fit certain topics, though it could just as easily be that I'm not understanding those passages.

All that said, it is amazing and powerful to see all Jesus' teachings on a subject together, and the world is a better place for having this book in it. If you are a Christian who wants to know Jesus better, or a non-Christian curious to hear Jesus without the middlemen's interpretation, you need this book.

It's very similar to reading a red-letter edition Bible and only reading the words in red. No commentary, no cross referencing, etc. Still it is a little like having a one-sided conversation directly with Jesus. Kindof cool, but not that amazing.

Ok I'll be honest. I haven't read this cover to cover. It's not meant to be read as a book but used as a reference tool (like a concordance) or as a devotional perhaps. I love the focus on the words of Jesus and I plan on using it as a reference guide.

Exactly what I was looking for - a complete collection quotes from Jesus himself without any fluff. I recommend reading more as a reference text than cover to cover.

This book is better as a reference to one's questions about spiritual life and Biblical teachings, but it may be read as a challenge. It becomes repetitive read this way as many themes repeat the Gospel written by more than one Apostle. There are slight differences in their writings. The Gospel is now deeper within this reader and its application is easier applied.

I love this book because it's NOT the type of book you pick up and read from front to back. It's more encyclopedic, being broken down into sections like: What Christ Tells Us About Himself, What Christ Tells Us About His Father in Heaven, What Christ Tells Us About the Holy Spirit & so on. Each section then has subtopics so it's very easy to find what you're looking for.
