FUN, ENGAGING AND FULL OF THOUGHT PROVOKING QUESTIONS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE!
The 50 projects featured are really cool and yet, very budget friendly and also engaging: DIY hourglass or map, learn about calligraphy or home gardening herbs, or DIY stained glass windows, learn about sword fighting, make up a ballad, learn how to play chess, create your own Legend, and more!
The book brings up many points of fame and infamy in the Middle Ages and Renaissance eras including politics, religion including paganism and Wicca, health and medical practices, the Crusades, social class, architecture, Marco Polo, world culture, home life, holiday celebrations, languages and so much more...
I really REALLY love the thought provoking questions it asks throughout the book. For example, they talk about gender roles and specifically stress a woman's position and what her role was in society. It asks the kids what they think about it. There are others that ask about kids' opinions (used in terms they understand) what they think about this persecution or what this monarch did or what this legendary figure actually stood for. It also asks about stuff that makes you go, 'Huh' or "YES! Let our kids hear an unbiased question or belief about this time in history")
Recommended for Grades 3-8. Good idea source for "Imagine your Story" SLP theme 2020 OR for any May Day or Medieval program idea. Great resource for Librarians, teachers, and Homeschool parents!
Excellent addition to our studies! I love how the activities aren't print/copy/paste as i've found in most teacher manuals, but they also avoided odd materials. Most of the materials for projects could be easily obtained if not found around my house. I learned a lot alongside my children.
Teachers and scout leaders are always looking for resources containing simple exercises that their groups can be given. Some of them are strictly for entertainment, while the best ones combine education with entertainment. The period of European history that we call the Middle Ages was one where life was hard, for the peasant servitude was the norm with the potential for death by starvation or malnutrition always present. It is important for young people to learn about life in the Middle Ages and this book is part history and part activities with a focus on that history. The exercises are all well within the capability of a child nine years old, some of them are mental while others are acts of simple construction. As you look through the pages, it is easy to see why this book was a Dr. Toy award winner, it is extremely educational and entertaining. I strongly recommend it as a resource for activities about this important period of history.
