Love in Another Town

Rate this book
Estranged from his wife, Amy, Jake Cantrell feels his life has stalled as he approaches his twenty-ninth birthday. Seeking a divorce and distance, he has moved to the town of Kent, Connecticut, to concentrate on his new electrical contracting business. But at the first meeting of a local amateur theatrical group, he meets Maggie Sorrell, an interior designer who will be working with him on sets and lighting. Charming, attractive, and fifteen years Jake's senior, Maggie has also come to Kent fleeing a broken relationship—cruelly betrayed by her lawyer ex-husband and painfully out of touch with her two grown children. And as they begin renovations on an old farmhouse, Jake and Maggie find themselves drawn together by a powerful emotional need and falling in love—a love that will have to endure many obstacles and tragic circumstances to bloom gloriously in a small town.

This book was so cheesy, I could serve it on a plate with sausage and crackers. To be fair, that is what I expected when I picked this book up. So if you want a little brain candy and a quick afternoon by the fire read, this is perfect! "Crystal cave of wisdom"...Really?

Ick. This was book so terrible it was funny. Not sure why is was ever published. Shallow characters, ridiculous dialog and the plot, wait, there was no plot. Married couple, divorcing, man wants the divorce the wife doesn't. You only actually meet her twice!!! Good looking older women enters the picture, man meets women wife gets cancer and dies. What???? all 181 pages were a chore to get through. Burn it.

It was a nice, short story. I love this author, but this book didn’t have much substance. Kind of predictable. The ending was impactful.

Best part of the book:
“You and she are meant to be together. You were always meant to be together, and your whole life has been a journey toward her. And hers has been a journey toward you. Once you were souls who were joined together as one, and then you were split asunder. Your whole lives have been spent trying to get back to each other. When you found each other you became whole. Never doubt her in any way.” P. 171

I thought this was ok. It was light and predictable but it was a nice level of romance.

A nice read if you don't want to think too much.

The basic story was interesting, and I wanted to finish the book to find out how things turned out; but the characters, the dialogue, the plot all seemed forced.

I had built up anticipation to read this book after seeing the TV movie for it years ago. I didn't have a chance to really read it until now and I must say I was disappointed by this book. It was a nice mindless read, which I like every now and then. The story line and characters had no spark, no "catch" if you will. I felt the timeline of events throughout the story were rushed and severely lacked details & descriptions. I thought it was awfully predictable and lost interest in it pretty quickly. The only reason I finished this book was because it is short. I would not recommend it to hard core romance novel fans, but definitely to anyone looking for an easy read.

Do not read. This is the worst book I have ever read in my entire life. The plot was terrible. The characters flat. The book sent the message: “a man is the center of the universe all women are only accessories to his success and fulfillment.” She had some unique vocabulary and the book was short; those were the only good things about it.

This is one of those 'in a day'-reads, it's that easy. And it is too sweet in my opinion. Not much of the real life. However it was a fine diversion, but I will not read it again.

This was a good book how ever I do wish the author had done more to make it more interesting. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.

This was a pretty good book and a fast read (only 181 pages). At times the book seemed to move too quickly and I often wondered if this was a very early piece of work for this author. Some of the writing style/grouping of words sounded more like the book was taking place somewhere in England rather than in Connecticut, USA. I can't remember specific spots. More just a general feeling overall. The other thing I had an issue with was the main character referring to her ex husband quite often as Mike Sorrell. Really? Who does that? She was married to the man for over twenty years and in quite a few spots (I lost count lol) she calls him by both first and last names. I have been married for a long time and when I mention my husband in conversation I don't use his last name. I say either his first name only or I say my husband. I know it's a nit picky thing but it drove me crazy!! Overall the book was pretty good though!!!

This book is okay. I can say it is a sad but happy story. Jake and Amy, high school sweethearts that drifted away from each other helpless and full of dreams without even knowing it. Divorce on the edge, Jake moves out of town. Jake meets best friends, Maggie and Samantha on a theatrical job for lighting, The Crucible. When Jake and Maggie get serious, a large job falls into place for the both of them on a farm. Maggie learns she is expecting a child. Amy falls ill with cancer and later gets in a fatal car accident and has a near death experience. As Amy's life falters, she no longer wants a divorce and as a final farewell to Jake she leaves him everything she can to him and wishes him well on his new life journey with Maggie and their soon to be son. The only thing she wishes for Jake is for him to marry immediately after she's gone. As a promise we'll kept, Jake and Maggie get married and soon expect their sons arrival. It is such a short story but cute and bittersweet.

Now this story really held my interest ... and it's quite relatable to today's times! Jake is married but separated from his wife. He has felt suffocated in this relationship for quite a while and even though Amy was his childhood sweetheart, her negativity in everything has soured even the happy times! So a move to another town (still close by) has enthused him to revive in spirit! As an electrical engineer his fledgling business has grown and Jake is content to spread his wings! Theatre, interior design and a couple of enterprising women have drawn him out to believe that there is a future for him. And, indeed, what an interesting future to be had .... there is a mixture of happiness and sadly trauma! I know I haven't said a lot and yet I think I have! yep, this was a cute, heart warming story!

This was the most boring, predictable, almost tedious book i have read in a long time. There was little to no tension or emotions shared between characters, despite the fact that two of them were in a relationship. It felt as if the author was trying to hurry things along, and tried to make it more 'mature' by giving the main character a painstakingly surface level excuse for divorcing his wife. It is a straightforward reading and lacks any adventure or slow burn and is pretty anticlimactic. The main character was written like a douche that i had to check the author name to make sure that it wasn't written by a man. If you're looking for a good read, with an interesting plot and a devastating, yet comforting ending - dont be fooled, this isn't the right book for you.

oh gosh,i rediscover myself as a bookworm,i like romance and love story so much. while i read every single page in this book i kept telling myself, I'm glad i picked this one.although i always think love is same and love stories are pretty much same like happy ending at the end nothing much, and we all know that but i did like reading love story and this book don't fail me, Maggie's feminine energy, jakes kindness everything on point .i felt like watching a romantic movie all the time while flipping through the pages. I just loved it.

This book was exactly how I thought it would be. Cheesy and predictable. Having said that, it was a nice read for a little two day getaway I was on and wanted a book like this. As cheesy as the ending was, I actually liked that it was happy And I even found myself tearing up a bit. Not much substance and if this was my first book by her I'd probably never want to read more but I know she's better than this novel.

I started this book as a pool-side read, and at best, that’s what it was. I was excited by the summary, but not much else happens.. There was so much potential but the characters and story line were too flat for my liking. A lot of filler and descriptive words too, which made it hard not to laugh at times. Not something I would recommend unless you’re looking for a light read.

Maybe I need to stop reading these kinds of novels. It was a sweet, albeit, very unrealistic story. Man leaves wife, finds another, but stays friends with the 1st wife then is able to meet the needs of everyone in his life with a busy career. I guess if you want a feel good book, this would meet that need. A very quick read.

Jake is a 28 y.o. carpenter going through a divorce from his high school sweetheart. Falls in love with 44 y.o.divorced Maggie. Both Jake and Maggie are "perfect". But Jakes ex comes down with cancer. He supports her until she dies and then married his love Maggie. Too much drama, shallow storyline. Very poormans Nicholas Sparks book

Hey! I’ve been reading your story and really enjoyed it the emotions and flow felt very natural. While reading, I kept picturing how some scenes would look as comic panels.

I'm not a huge romance novel reader anymore, but sometimes I'll pick one up due to a sad mood. Love in Another Town is lighthearted, a short read, and I thoroughly enjoyed the characters. Hint though, make sure you're not anywhere public when you get to the bedroom scenes...oh my!

Shockingly a story where the movie is better than the book. There's nothing wrong with the book as such, it really just suffered from a lack of real drama and ended up being kind of boring. The movie with Victoria Principal is far more entertaining.

I enjoyed this story, up until the part where it got all spiritual and other dimensions. I was looking to read a nice, easy love story kind of read. This was definitely it. Then it got into near death experiences, and going to another realm....just not for me.
