This is a solid collection of color reprints of selected DC war comics from the 1940s - 1970s. I have some problems with the book's subtitle of "The best of DC War Comics," however, as the collection is more along the lines of a chronological sampling than a truly critical collection. Still, it's interesting to see early work by Jack Kirby in The Boy Commandos, and the three Our Army At War/Sgt Rock stories and the Unknown Soldier piece presented are all classics. It's nice to see Sam Glanzman's USS Stevens included as well, and, of course, the ever-incredible Mlle. Marie!

Overall, it's a great collection for no other reason than it presents some hard-to-find/expensive stories on relatively high quality paper in a format you can find used for around $10 (paperback).

I think this book was doomed to fail. In my reading, the best DC war comics are the miscellaneous stories, not those with continuing characters. There is two outstanding stories in this collection, "Push-Button War!" and "Kamikaze," but most feature the series characters and the best of these, "Killer of the Skies!," "What's the Color of Your Blood," and "8,000 to One," do not rise to that level, so the book fails its subtitle. It is a good collection that uses the history of DC war comics with an emphasis on the latter and better work, but it should have been better.

Recently cleaned out my room at my mothers house and found this book. It was one of my favorites as a kid. I still remember many of the stories.
