Jason Medlocke, a homicide detective in suburban Georgia, must summon the magic of his warlock ancestors in order to combat the 'Mercy Killer', a serial rapist and murderer stalking Gwinnett County
Strong prose from Ryan and a solid debut. The first half to 3/4 of this book are fantastic with vibes akin to Michael Slade's Headhunter and Thomas Harris's Red Dragon, but with a supernatural evil presence that builds and develops alongside the characters and story.
While the last 1/4 has a greater focus on action and confrontation, it doesn't keep pace with the momentum that had been building from the start. It occasionally loses its focus during the detailed action sequences and the scenes between good and evil that are meant to raise tension, but instead often seem out of place and uninspired considering what came before.
It all comes together in the end for a finish that wraps up things a little too easily and neatly for my taste with little to no "wow" factor.
