One year ago, Sara’s twin brother and his wife were brutally murdered. By vampires, creatures that can’t exist. But Sara knows better and she’s on a mission to kill as many as she can…until she comes across a man from her past. This short story was originally published in the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance.

Bio...
Shiloh Walker has been writing since she was a kid. She fell in love with vampires with the book Bunnicula and has worked her way up to the more...ah...serious vampire stories. She loves reading and writing anything paranormal, anything fantasy, and nearly every kind of romance. Once upon a time she worked as a nurse, but now she writes full time and lives with her family in the Midwest.
I started off at a disadvantage with this. I've never read anything by Shiloh Walker or even heard of the Hunters World series (that's what it's called, right?). I just wanted something short and entertaining and above all FREE. What I found was a somewhat cliché, typical vampire romance short story that brings little (if anything) new to the table. We meet our heroine while she is stalking a vampire ready to go in for the kill when she is stopped by a very handsome man she once had a week of passion with after the death of her brother and sister-in-law. Turns out he’s a bloodsucker, too. Here is where we get into the cliché area.
She’s petrified of vampires and clearly scared of this guy, yet his sex appeal is so alluring and magical that she cannot resist him. Wyatt (that’s the name of this vampire hunk) steals her weapons and stops her moment of vengeance and he’s very interested in resuming their week of passion where they left off long ago. She gets attacked, he fights for her honor. He nurses her back to health, and then…
Well, you can guess.
More stuff happens after that. I give the story a 2.5/5 but round it to two. The entire story seemed forced and empty, and I got no sense of the characters or their motivations since they were easily broken (or based on sex, which was somewhat dull). Sara especially seemed like she was easily broken from her mission of retribution. Also, the formatting on this ebook was very off-putting, and sections of bad grammar and word choice didn’t help.
It’s a typical vampire romance story in every way except in short form, simply put.
It was okay but it could have been better. I would not recommend reading this unless you are already familiar with the world because this short story leaves questions unanswered such as why Wyatt had been instructed to watch over Sara a year ago and who the Hunters were.
Sara's mission to kill vampires was believable due to her loss. Even the one-night, err, that is to say 7-nights stand seems plausible given her state of mind at the time. Wyatt seemed like a decent character but Sara was weak. It may be due to word count restriction which meant that the reader would not be able to see a side of her that did not require rescuing but it's the end result that matters. Sara may have been set up to look like a tough vampire killer but this wasn't shown to the reader.
I also did not get much sense of chemistry between Sara and Wyatt, and I could not fully believe that they had fallen in love with each other in 8 days. I also thought that she jumped in bed with Wyatt too quickly. If her struggles to accept that not all vampires are evil and that Wyatt could be trusted were expanded, I thought that that would have made her acceptance of Wyatt more persuasive.
Finally, this format could have used an editor to catch problems such as typos and use of wrong words in a sentence.
Sara's twin brother and best friend (his wife) were brutally murdered on their honeymoon. Sara knows it was vampires who killed her brother and she has made it her mission in life to hunt them down and kill them. Shortly after her brother's murder she meets Wyatt. She is instantly attracted to Wyatt and spends a week with him barley leaving the hotel room they got together. But she wakes up one day realizing she is using Wyatt as an escape, and she leaves. Without a word, leaves Wyatt while he's in the shower. A year later Wyatt shows up again, and Sara learns Wyatt is not exactly who she thought he was or who she has longed for the past year since she walked out of their hotel room.
I loved this story right up until the end. I knew this was going to be a short story, but the ending seemed a bit abrupt. There were still problems to be dealt with. Wyatt listed these problems more than once, when he was trying to tell himself why he should not pursue a relationship with Sara. But at the end they still didn't explain how all that stuff would work out. Oh well, not a huge deal. I still liked this little snippet into Wyatt and Sara's life. I just was caught off guard when it ended.
A vampire and a vampire-hunter. It's funny, because there is even a reference to Buffy. :) I liked it, good short story, wished there was more to it. But I guess that's the point of it being a short story... :-D
Sara's brother and sister-in-law were killed by vampires a year ago, ever since then she has been on a personal mission to kill all vampires, thinking they are all evil killers.
Enter Wyatt, the man she had a week-long fling with a year ago. He's come to stop Sara from her killing and to convince her not ALL vampires are bad, just not ALL humans are good. And that's right, Wyatt's a vampire.
Can he convince the woman he hasn't been able to forget to stop her personal vendetta and maybe convince her that what they had was more then a fling?
Reading this book was like only eating the inside of a sandwich. Like only licking the jelly out of a pb&j. It was totally incomplete. It dropped of and left you hanging. I kept turning pages saying "WTF"? I had to read reviews to find out if I was missing something. Oh well!
If you have an hour to kill, waste etc. And want an unfullfilling hmmm, brain melting read. This is the ebook for you. It needed about 100 more pages to figure out what the he'll was going on & now what are they going to do. Neither one answered here!
No chemistry, clichéd language and actions but it's too blink-and-it's-over short to really flesh out the story and characters. Bit dubious about 'One thing about being a vampire, if she had been bleeding internally, he would have scented it.' How exactly would he have been able to distinguish between internal bleeding and the rest of the blood in her veins?
HUNTER’S CHOICE is a stand-alone novella in the Hunters series by Shiloh Walker. Found in the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance, Hunter’s Choice is a short story of revenge, love and betrayal.
Sara was on a mission. It had been one year since her twin brother Joseph and his wife were found murdered and Sara wanted revenge. Armed with a cross-bow and handgun, Sara would ensure no others would be bled dry by a blood-sucking vampire. Hoping to prevent another victim, Sara took aim at the figure deep in the dark alley.
Wyatt knew he had made a critical error when the woman he was sent to protect became his lover. Remembering everything about Sara-the way she moved, she smelled and tasted, beckoned his vampire heart. Sara was grieving for the loss of her twin, and no amount of sex was going to prevent the sorrow and revenge. But a year of following and protecting Sara from herself was going to end this night. He would have to reveal his true identity to the woman he had fallen in love (with), to protect the life of another innocent vampire. But first he had to stop her from killing.
Hunter’s Choice is a quick read. A short story written in the style of the Hunters series, but one that is considered a stand-alone novel. A woman who seeks revenge for the murder of her brother, only to find that the man who was once her lover, may be the enemy she seeks. A welcome bonus to the Hunter series.
I loved this novella! It’s nothing better for a short story with a sexy vampire! I haven’t read any other books by Shiloh Walker but I’m sure that know I will read all her books! This novella is very well-written, with great plot and characters.
The story is about Sara, a human who has spent a year to hunt vampires because her brother and his wife were murdered by vampires. She lives a lonely life with only an exception: a week, a year ago, when she was having sex with a total stranger. But now, this is in the past and she has to take her revenge. But one night, Wyatt, this stranger comes back to her life and he reveals his big secret.
I really liked Sara because although horrible things happened to her, she is not unreasonable and she’s trying to do the right thing, even if that means that she has to help someone who is what she is afraid the most. Wyatt is sexy but he is smart too. He knows what to tell her so she can trust him. I liked that the story is from both POVs.
A great short read that I enjoyed very much! I recommend it to all the fans of this genre!
I got this free from Amazon. When I start a book I put my thinking cap on because I need to figure out the world where the author wants me to go. This book was a little harder to get into because the first chapter was written bad. I mean bad. It needs some major revision. By the second chapter the writing was much improved so I continued. Walker created a very interesting world and it brought me back into a paranormal romance mode that I was enjoying. Then the book freakin ended. I was so pissed off. Yeah! This is a short story, stand alone. WTH. To all authors, if you are thinking to write a short story stand alone book, just stop. Don't do it. I liked the characters and the author could really have taken the story in many directions. I wish she would finish this but, I looked it up online and she's won't. I'm very disappointed. This is not clean...it is kinda raunchy.
Man, it's a good thing this was free on kindle. For one thing, it was short. There's nothing inherently wrong with a short story, but it's surprisingly hard to write a good short story, which this was not. There was no character development, which led to no emotional connection to the characters. When Wyatt gets shot by a crossbow (which Sara manages to walk around Chicago with, no questions asked) I simply felt no empathy for him. None at all. And there was the dreaded "I need you!" romance based entirely on the face that the two main characters had fantastic sex for a week at some point last year. Hello, authors! Wake up, that's not how romance works!
Essentially, this was just no good. I think the author decided to get in on the whole vampire fad without wanting to put any real effort into the story at all.

"Hunter's Choice" by Shiloh Walker. A short story set in The Hunters Series world.
**NOTE** This story can be read anytime throughout the series and acts as a stand alone.
Short, sweet and to the point. Romance and action all rolled into a short little story.
This story is about Sara. Her brother and his fiance were killed by a vampire a year ago and now Sara is determined to hunt down that vampire and kill him...and any other vampire she may find along the way.
Wyatt hasn't stopped thinking about Sara since the moment she left him a year ago. Now he's finally found her...in an alley with a crossbow, about to kill someone....
Very well written for such a short story. You get just enough information and background on the characters to get a feel for them. Both were very likeable. I liked it.
A free kindle download. This was an interesting short. I would definitely look for the others in the series. Sarah's twin brother and his wife were murdered by a vampire. Now she has become a hunter, seeking out and killing the "monsters" who murdered her family. Wyatt Cooper is a vampire, he works for the council tracking down and killing rogues. He was sent to make sure that Sarah was O.K. after the death of her brother last year, and failed in his duty. He fell in love with her, and after a week, she left him, and her didn't go after her. Now he is charged with stopping her vengeance against innocent vampires. But, seeing her again awakens all his old feelings and he hopes this time maybe he can keep her.
Sara lost her brother and his wife a year ago to Vampires. She lives in the real world where those kind of fantastic creatures only exist in stories... right? Well, now she knows better and has armed herself against it happening to herself. There are the Hunters in the fantasy world that kill the crazy creatures because there are rules with living in peace with humans. Sara doesn't know about the Hunters, she believes that all the creatures and especially the Vampires are evil and must be killed. So she hunts and kills all the Vampires that she can find. Until a certain one finds her and she learns that there are good Vampires too. This is a short sexy read, nothing too explicit to make it erotica. Short story and free on kindle 2 stars
Disclaimer: I usually don't read short story. It may reflect in my rating. I was cleaning up my iPad when I saw the book and decided to give it a try. It had been in the device for over a year.
I liked it. It was a quick, short and sweet and most of all, there was no cliffhanger. This is something I always fear when I see a short story or novelette. Pros: even if it is very short, you still get to know and like both protagonists. Cons: there were a few missing words in the text. Not enough so it couldn't be understood but enough to notice. (It might not be the author's fault. Digital transfer can make words disappear sometimes.)
Over all, I'd recommend the book to vampire lovers especially if you need a quick read.
This was a freebie, shorty book from Kindle and I liked it, however I wish it had been longer. It had a nice backstory and the characters were charming. This is one of those books that would have been better with more detail. It's so short that you don't have the time to get invested in the relationship and you wish you knew more about what happened to the H/h during the year they were separated. The ending left me empty, but only because I wanted more info. My recommendation to the author is stretch this book out, fill in a zillion details and you'd have a big hit on your hands.
I had read some of this series before, but losing interest, I put it aside. This SS makes me want to read it again. It reminds me of a book I read years ago about a vampire king who rescues a girl on the beach and they fall in love. This has some good action scenes in it.
Sara's brother and her BF were killed by vampires so she's made it her life's work to hunt down and kill them. Wyatt intends to put a stop to it. Unfortunatly, she is the girl he met at a resort a year ago and has be dreaming of ever since.
Reread 12/08/14 I didn't realize I had read this before. I feel the same about it so no change.
Original review 08/27/11 Sara's been after vampires ever since they killed her twin brother and his wife. Wyatt catches her as she's slowly killing every vampire she finds. They had a week affair after her brother's death. She didn't know he was a vampire and now she has to change some of her thinking. Wish the story was a little longer. Enjoyable.
I would not consider this book to be a book. More like a poorly formatted short story. About 100 or so pages of pure repetition with a little bit of intercourse put in for fun. The entire book is about a woman and a vampire, she hates him but wants him and they barely know each other. If you where to take out the gooey romantic parts of twilight and format it so that a five year old could read it... then you would have this.
Enjoyable and nicely short (which was what I was in the mood for). Yes, I did think that Sara changed her tune about vampires mighty quickly once Wyatt popped up, but the sex was nice and her sudden change of heart wasn't a deal-breaker.
This is a (very) short story that can be read at anytime during the Hunters series. It is short and to the point. The whole book only covers a couple of different locations and times. You don't have to have read any of the other Hunter books but it is part of the series, so it's up to you. There is a mild sex scene but nothing to get hot under the collar about. Enjoyable for a short coffee break.
This was a nice quick read. An entertaining vampire romance that's different from the twilight type. It was a nice intro to The Hunters series, it had me wanting more after I finished this short story. Shiloh Walker is a good author. I got this one free on my kindle, I will definately be getting more books from this author.
I dont really know what to rate this. I didn't realize it was a short story. I was going to complain that the characters were not well developed but then thought to myself .. how could they be? its a short story. With that said, I think anyone who has read a few paranormal romance books could have whipped this up in a night. It was only okay.
If you hate vampires because they killed your brother and an old lover return and turns out to be a vampire you would not jump too fast to bed with him, right?
For me wasn't believable that they had fallen in love after a week of sex a year before. And she wasn't in a good emotional state at that moment; her brother died.
So, a short vampire story. Could have been better.
I don't know how well a novella can be rated. It's short so there is little chance for a believable story to take place. Walker cuts down on that by giving us a couple known to one another, but there is a major trust issue which cannot be realistically be solved within the short time the author has to work.
This is a short story and if you like or love romance with predictable plots and a sexy hero this is for you. This is like comfort food, not good for you but fun. I give it a four star rating, it is perfectly suited for a fast, speedy, fun read. 4 *! Woo hoo Shiloh, I’ll be on the lookout for more books in this series.
The book seemed to have a twilight series affect on me. Don't get me wrong I used to love twilight but this just seemed like some fanfic that was published. I guess you could sum it up to the story just not being very original to me. Decent book besides the originality issue though.
