Share the fun of bird-watching with the whole family! Kids are naturally curious, and Wild About Wisconsin Birds by Adele Porter can help satisfy that curiosity while fostering a love of nature. In the backyard, at a city park, or on a road trip, you'll reach for Wild About Wisconsin Birds again and again.
I purchased this for my grandson and I as we enjoy bird watching. It has a lot of interesting information that we didn't find in more "formal" bird books. Unfortunately, by the end of only a couple hours of use, the glued-on cover no longer stuck. And while the sewn binding held, that's not good enough for a book/magazine that will get lots of use. I spent about two hours carefully cutting through the sewings then used a three-hole-punch so I could put the pages in a binder. After doing so, I realized I will need to cut the pages apart and attach hole reinforcements. Such a disappointment for myself and my 10-year-old grandson. I recommend the content but not the way it's currently assembled. The notebook will likely stay in my vehicle so it will be hand when my grandson and I are out and have a chance to do some bird watching.
There is one other issue. At the bottom of the last page of the book/magazine, there is a suggestion to "go to www.birdsforkids.com to download and print a free bookmark that features a life-size Black-capped Chickadee and tells how to use your5 book to identify a bird." Despite the fact that the book/magazine was published in 2009, that site is "Under Construction" and there was no mention at all of the free bookmark. Instead, all the hyperlinks took me to places where I could buy things.
New to Wisconsin, I borrowed this book from a local library to help me identify and learn more about the birds in my new backyard and nearby marsh. We now live in a major migration fly-way, so, this is a great book to have on hand. That it is "a Youth's Guide" makes it less complex than most bird guide books. The photos of the birds are extraordinary and make for easy identification. This paperback version is a tad flimsy and will need special care if the pages aren't to separate from the binding. I'm not sure how it survives as a library book! Never-the-less, I've decided to buy a copy of my own; it's a keeper for sure!
