This is an amazing cookbook for anyone who wants to learn how to cook Indian food but has no idea where to begin. The author breaks down everything at the beginning, from alphabetically arranged spices with pictures to how to grind and roast them. She also gives shortcuts on Indian cooking, since the original method can sometimes be very time-consuming. A wonderful cookbook for anyone with a passion for cooking or for Indian food :)
I thought this book was very well organized and explained. Ways to simplify the recipes were provided and how to get "around" not having some of the Indian cooking tools were provided. The end has resources for obtaining spices and ingredients not to be found in the average grocery store which is very helpful. Samosas still look daunting to me and can't believe that tortillas can be used instead of the dough....
I just recieved this book today from Amazon.com. Not only did I buy this book to support a fellow Houstonion but I also was looking for an Indian cookbook that had recipes that I could make easily at home. I have to admit after reading through several recipes that these are NOT "Easy" Indian Recipes for "Busy" People... what a deceptive title. I broke down and bought a block of paneer at my "local" Indian spice shop instead of making my home-made paneer as stated in the Saag Paneer (spinach w/ cheese cubes) recipe. This is not an easy recipe for a busy person.. perhaps I will attempt the home-made cheese when I find my cheesecloths.. I also was dissapointed that in one recipe it required fresh pieces for grinding the spices at home, instead of just something you can buy at Indian grocery like "curry" or "garam masala" already prepared... again, not a recipe for a busy person... I have rated 3 stars because of the deceptive title, not that I have tried the recipes yet. Will update when I do Saag Paneer (but with store-bought paneer). Not to mention, I bought this by mistake thinking it was the book I wanted, the other one had 350 recipes, and had better reviews as to the ease and authenticity of the Indian recipes.
Though i read this book here and there for some special recipes i couldn't able to prepare tandoori roti properly. i like spiced tomato soup which we call 'rasam' in india. pictures very clear and neat presentation.
My husband and I love Indian food. This book really has some great recipes. If you want to learn the basics of Indian Food this is a great starter book.
