This is the sequel to Jake. Annette Butterworth dedicated this book to her husband, who illustrated this book. I wonder how he felt about the dedication. I was about halfway through this book before I realized it was a sequel. Oh, well. There seems to be enough backstory given so you know what's going on.

This book was written for a UK audience. American kids might have trouble with it. "Why is the Mayor wearing that funny necklace?" That sort of thing. "What is a charter?"

At the time this was first published in 1996, it was popularly thought that it was okay to feed your dog chocolate. We now know that chocolate is poisonous to dogs, the darker the chocolate, the more toxic.

Jake is a large, pointy eared dog of undetermined pedigree. He loves to play football (soccer), chase squirrels and eat. He also has a tendency to get into trouble, through no fault of his own.

The village park is being sold. It's the only place where dogs are allowed off-leash, and where Jake's favorite human gets to meet his friends. And the Mayor and council members all have shiny new cars.

This is a predictable story, but takes quite a few unpredictable twists and turns to get to that predictable ending. Even the Queen plays a cameo here.

Despite the crisis, Jake manages to have a cracking good time. It is odd that the family he lives with never walks him. It's the neighbor who does, which is how he becomes Jake's favorite human.

Sadly, it's also now known that dog parks aren't all that great for dogs. They not only can spread diseases to dogs (because most people can't afford to take their dogs to the vet) but also encourages accidental dog fights. This is why many dog parks are tightly fenced and locked, with keys given to specially selected members.
