Jenna Black is your typical writer. Which means she's an "experience junkie." She got her BA in physical anthropology and French from Duke University.

Once upon a time, she dreamed she would be the next Jane Goodall, camping in the bush making fabulous discoveries about primate behavior. Then, during her senior year at Duke, she did some actual research in the field and made this shocking discovery: primates spend something like 80% of their time doing such exciting things as sleeping and eating.

Concluding that this discovery was her life's work in the field of primatology, she then moved on to such varied pastimes as grooming dogs and writing technical documentation. She writes paranormal romance for Tor and urban fantasy for Bantam Dell.

3.5 stars. I have to admit that the main reason I love this series is the beautiful loving relationship between Adam and Dominic. In this book, Morgan even realizes that there's is the most healthy relationship she knows despite the BDSM. I'm not a fan of that myself but the way it's presented here, it does sound reasonable and healthy. I like that Morgan admits that even thinking of them together arouses her.

As usual, Morgan's mouth needs an off button but several times she forced herself to stop and acknowledged that maybe she's growing up. I still don't get what Brian sees in her because she's so angry and abrasive and closed off but I love his character and I'm glad there's a wonderful male love interest in UF who's nice and not scary and yet very much a man, even amid the testosterone flowing around him in barrels from the other characters. I really wish they'd get another female main character but I see why Black doesn't want to upset the dynamic.

The story worked for me and went on at a great clip. I read it in one sitting. I likes the character development--they're growing with each successive book and Morgan was faced with ethical issues this time around--but I think that Morgan's hatred of Adam is ridiculous and been carried on for too long. She keeps saying she hates and that he hates her but their actions don't back that up. His complaints about her are more exasperation than hate and mostly about her inability to stay out of trouble.

I like this take on demons but it's important to remember that these are not Judeo-Christian demons; they're more like demons from Hindu or Persian faiths where there isn't necessarily a "good" counterpart and they aren't always 100% evil, just mostly.

I'm obviously a series junkie. Jenna Black's latest book in her Morgan Kingsley Exorcist series was another book I just could not put down. Morgan is an exorcist (duh) living in a contemporary world where demons are real and people can volunteer to become a demon host. Morgan is called in when demons don't play nicely with humans and commit crimes or seize control of a host without permission. She's one of the most successful and strongest exorcists working in the U.S. today. In the first book, "The Devil Inside", Morgan finds out that she's been unwillingly possessed herself! Moral and ethical mayhem ensues and these books do have quite a bit of violence too. They also feature some pretty hot sex (both homo and hetero, BDSM, etc) yet still have a definite urban fantasy feel to them. Since I like romance, fantasy, and urban fantasy; these books hit on all three for me. Anyway in the second book "The Devil You Know", Morgan again faces some thorny moral and ethical issues with a side dish of family problems to boot! She also became a bit more than friends with the King of the Demons who she is now an unwilling and uneasy host for. Enough of the backstory.

In "The Devil's Due", Morgan has to make one of the hardest decisions of her life...she must choose between friend and family and become complicit in not just allowing, but helping, a demon to inhabit a human. As if that's not bad enough, throw in an illegal possession by a demon, the kidnapping of two human girls, and her own demon, Lugh the King of Demons, is swapping seduction hints with her lover while still trying to seduce Morgan himself!!

I think one of the reasons I enjoy Jenna Black's stories about Morgan so much is that, compared to her, my life is a piece of cake! Each book has a realistic (for that world) ethical and moral dilemma that Morgan must face; and when I read about her decisions and the reasons she has for those decisions, it makes her even more real to me. So if this sounds like something you might like, I can't say more than that I eagerly await each new glimpse Black provides into Morgan's screwed up life.

72 points/100 (3 ¾ stars/5)

Now that Morgan Kingsley's life is back to being stable, she is investigating a possession. Typically this wouldn't be a big deal. The possessed guy, Tommy, is registered and possessed legally. Only, his parents have legitimate reasons to believe that he would never, ever agree to host a demon. Morgan finds that there is more to this investigation than she could have ever imagined.

The Devil's Due was definitely my least favourite book in the series so far, by far. This felt more like a side adventure. A boring side adventure, at that. This is the third book in a five book long series, the midway point. The middle books of planned series do happen to have a tendency of sitting around doing nothing, but I don't typically feel that so strongly in five book long series. Trilogies are the real killers on this.

I was really bored by this investigation Morgan launches herself into. It doesn't even make sense why she should be doing this! She isn't an investigator. She handles court orders to exorcise demons from humans. She can't just act on her own say so on this. She has no reason to be investigating this except for curiosity and to further the story through what she finds out. Which she couldn't possibly know when she took the case. I'm just so confused on why this book is doing these things the way it is.

Morgan is just my least favourite part of this series, easily. She is always so damn abrasive. Confrontational. Annoying as all hell. You would think, after all this time in the series so far, she would learn to rely on others trying to help her. She has to learn that in order to survive, she has to give up some control to others, rely on her allies. It is getting on my nerves.

She also has to learn that her boyfriend is her partner, not her enemy. Brian is actually a really nice person. He tries to help her sooo much, and she just pushes him away. He is always supportive of everything that is going on, always there for her. He goes above and beyond to help her, to the point where I think it might be hurting his personal and professional life. So how does Morgan repay him? She gets angry at him for caring. She snaps at him and pushes him away. Morgan, stop being a shithead!

After really enjoying the first two books in this series, I'm kind of really disappointed in The Devil's Due. This just was not where I was hoping the series was going. I hope it picks up from here and gets back to what I really liked.

Another great installment in one of my new favorite series.

I am giving this five stars, not because it's any better than the first two, but because it was just as good and this series has been so consistently entertaining and fun to read, I feel like it's earned it's way to 5 star status. I'll continue to give these books 5 stars unless they start to slip and disappoint.

Only two problems with this book: 1. Not enough Adam and Dom (though it would take a lot of Adam and Dom for me to think there was enough....) and 2. Again with the "I'm a tough broad with a tattoo and multiple ear piercings." I have a tattoo. That does not make me a tough broad. It makes me a girl with a tattoo. Please stop saying that.
Oh, and I guess if I'm expressing my gripes: She keeps using the term "taser" as a verb. Taser is a noun. The verb is "tase." You tase someone with a tase-er. (Just like you freeze something in a freezer? You don't freezer your food...) Remember the whole Youtube "Don't tase me, bro!" thing? That there was a kid who understood word structure.

Otherwise a great book. :)

Ok, I don't know what it was about this book but about half way through the book I just wanted to be done with this particular Installment. I'm tired of Morgan's whiny, complaining, selfish, narrow minded ways (and to this I refer to Adam). Yes, she has a couple of good qualities and I would like to see those explored but for me, she needs to grow up already.

I get that she's supposed to be really tough and emotionally f*d up and really really scared of losing control but at this point I sort of expected her to get the point that she isn't the only one involved in this situation and that Lugh and Adam aren't really out to get her they are reacting to the way she is behaving. I honestly can't believe how Brian is still around. Like Raphael said "She's a reactionary bitch". This was my problem with Dante in Lilith SaintCrow's Dante series.

I loved the supporting characters and I really dug the plot but I'm fast becoming really bored with Morgan's one-note pity party. I'll probably read number four but I don't think I'm going to rush out to read it.

Review originally posted at BooksOfMyHeart.net.

So, I’m continuing my reread of Jenna Black’s Morgan Kingsley series. I still really enjoy this series.

In The Devil’s Due, Morgan is approached by a well-to-do woman who asks Morgan to exorcise her son. This woman is sure her son didn’t agree to be possessed. He was a member of God’s Wrath, which is a demon hate group. They believe in killing the human hosts, along with the demons. Problem is, if Morgan exorcises him, she can be charged with murder of the demon (humans believe that exorcising a demon kills them, when it just sends them back to the demon realm).

We also learn a lot more about what the demons on Earth have been up to. They want more malleable hosts and were using genetics to accomplish this. Lugh, the demon king, is just now learning about all of this. His brother, Raphael, knows about some of it, but not much, or so he says.

Lugh has also determined that he needs to set up a demon council on the Earthly plane, since he is stuck here for the foreseeable future. This makes for finding hosts for a demon that needs to be summoned, which doesn’t sit well with Morgan.

Adam, the demon cop, also continues to be a pain in Morgan’s rear. Dom, former demon host and Adam’s boyfriend, is still as sweet as ever. Brian, Morgan’s human boyfriend, is present a lot too. There’s times I love him and there are times when I want to shake him.

Speaking of shaking, Morgan needs her head pounded into the wall or something. She is a trainwreck. She just can’t seem to keep from pissing everyone off around her.

This continues to be an action packed urban fantasy story. There is the part about of the possessed hate group member which adds a nice mystery to the story, in addition to the overall story arc. I can’t remember how this is all wrapped up, but I have two books left in this series and I can’t wait to get to that point.

I’m just not as nice as Brian. I hold grudges and nurse my anger like a well-loved baby. Why a man like him loved someone like me was beyond my comprehension.

“I know you’re not the enemy,” I murmured against his collarbone as he returned my embrace. “And I’m sorry I’m such a bitch. I just… I want my life back, and I know I’m not going to get it, at least not anytime soon.”
“I understand,” he assured me. “And I love you even when you’re being bitchy.”
I couldn’t help laughing. “Good thing, that.”
His lips brushed the top of my head. “Yup.” I laughed again, slapping his chest and taking a step back. “Jerk! You didn’t have to agree with me.”

Raphael visibly bristled. “I thought I’d just passed your test of loyalty. Apparently, I was mistaken.”
“I believe in your loyalty,” Lugh said with a sardonic smile. “Your honesty, however, is still very much in question.”

Thoughts:

Black's exorcist series has been my guilty pleasure read for a quite a while. The Devil's Due is another solid entry into a world where demon's are among us and some humans willingly allow themselves to be possessed. It's hard to beat the crazy fabulous ending from the previous book, The Devil You Know, but Black comes close to it.

The constant battle of Morgan—our loud mouthed exorcist—and Lugh—the yummy demon king--has been the highlight of reading this series. This time around Lugh and Morgan are trying to find some middle ground, because Lugh possessing her and there's no way he's leaving. Of course this search for middle ground doesn't mean there's really any peace, so look forward to some more head butting sass. The struggle for Morgan to allow herself to let Lugh take control of her is really amusing, and in the end it may cause her more harm then frazzled nerves.

A mother hires Morgan to figure out why her son was possessed legally by all illegal means necessary, and perhaps get Morgan to illegally exorcise it. Soon Morgan finds herself not only trying to save an unwilling demon host, but diving deeper into the mystery of the human experimentation. Soon she finds another demon run experiment had more success then the one Morgan was spawned from. Leading to a very creepy and chilling conclusion.

One thing I loved about this installment is that not only does Morgan realize that she trusts Brian, and loves him enough to work things out. She also accepts that she's placed Brian on a pedestal and that he's human and will make grave decisions that may not be morally right. The relationship with the sadistic Adam takes a different turn. Sure they still hate each other, Adam tries at every turn to make Morgan uncomfortable and blush, but there's real progress. Morgan even gives Adam a sympathy hug, as the two understand each other just a tad more.

Black shows demon's at times can be human, Adam's love for his unpossessed boyfriend Dominic over powers his demon nature to obey his King, Lugh. Then at other times Black brings home how alien demon's really are, there ability to justify all actions for the need of there cause. Unable to understand why morals should stop them from achieving what they want.

The final paragraphs from The Devil's Due are some of my favorite, but I'll just leave the final two to sum things up.

The fate of the entire human race rests on the ability of this council of angry, antagonistic misfits to work together, to be honest with one another, and to watch each others backs. I have two words for you.

We're doomed.

Bottom Line:

This is a hardcore entry into the fantastic world of Morgan Kingsley, for any reader's who've had doubts about the series this should lay them to rest. These characters are growing, not just in the book, but on me. For those of you who have yet to try this series out, do it's one of the few demon/exorcist series out there and it does the UF genre proud.

Sexual Content:

This one is not as heavy on the male on male action as previous books, in fact I don't think there's much besides a few sweet kisses and dirty talk. However some readers may not like it. There are some other graphic sex scenes, but mainly between Morgan and her boyfriend.

Rating: 5/5- Fabulous, a beautiful obsession.

I love these books. This one was a lot tamer than the first two, in my opinion, but it had a great plot and Lugh, the demon king, is finally starting to do something (ie, create his court in the human world).

Oddly, I found this book in the romance section instead of SFF where I found the first two, but this book had a lot less romance than the others. I'm starting to like Brian more, but there's still something about him and his relationship with Morgan that's bothering me. I think it might be that he doesn't leave her. She's so not good to him. I like Morgan, but I think Brian deserves better. (I think Morgan thinks Brian deserves better, too.)

Anyways, six long months until the next book comes out. *sigh*

Slightly better than the first two. I don't know why I keep reading them. Seems I am a glutton for punishment. Or rather, I am waiting on new books to come in, and these are all I have left that I have not read.

The plot was OK.
For an Exorcist, she really doesn't exorcise very much in the series. Altho in this book, she did more than in the first two.

I still wish she'd stop telling me she is such a badass, mean, cold bitch.

I think I have a love hate relationship with these books. I like the world a lot, very unique and the ending is always action packed. It's just that Morgan can drive me batty at times. She tries to come across tough as nails but really she can just be a raging idiot at times. I think if she had a little more snark and there was a smidgen of humor in these books it would make all of the difference in the world. Still I'll read the next book though. I am curious how it all plays out.

While I liked the book well enough, I am over Morgan. I know she has a long standing hatred of demons, however, based on her situation, her level of whining is annoying. This is the third book, and really her whining and bitchassness has increased. I'm not sure I can read books 4 and 5 if this is how it's gonna be.

Also, Brian, grow a pair.

Leseeindruck - August 2010

I've now read the first three books in this series, and still, I find the sex scenes disturbing, and the main character to be a whiney, dense, little brat. I can't, nor will I rate this series any higher than 3 stars. Some of the action scenes are good, but, there's not enough of them to keep my sanity in check. C'mon already! Enough of the BDSM and S&M scenes! Are you LKH by any chance? I stopped reading her books for the same reason! This is the storyline of this book. Morgan gets in trouble, and calls in Adam. Then she does an exorcism and it goes wrong. Adam then tries to hide her away for her own good since she is still possessed by the king of hell, Lugh. Lugh, on the otherhand, has become a major pain in the rear, and I dislike his character alot. On the other hand, you know exactly what you are getting from Raphael and Adam. Even though you can't really trust Raphael, that is who he is afterall.

I love this series! Morgan is one kick-ass chick, but she always knows her faults and admits them. In this book Morgan is approached by a mother that claims her son has been taken over by a demon against his will, but all evidence shows that it was a legal demon...
As Morgan digs deeper and realizes that the boy, a member of God's Wraith (the demon hate group), was actually a part of something else all together, and now, it's getting more personal. With thugs coming to beat her and warn her off and a scary hostage situation, she has to put her trust into Raphael, but will he really help, or will he betray her as soon as he gets the chance?
This book had alot less sex then the last 2 books, only 1 breif scene. It was suspence and action and just an all around great read. Can't wait for book 4 coming in July!!

I'm still really liking this series. Morgan can be abrasive and annoying and hard-headed and she sometimes acts without thinking, but she's interesting. Her relationship with Lugh is convoluted but she likes him, even though he's a demon. She's harboring an attraction to Adam but she has Brian that she loves. It's all very complex.

The story: Morgan is approached by a distraught mother to investigate whether her son was coerced into becoming a demon host. Meanwhile, Lugh is planning on assembling his royal court on the mortal plain. The farther Morgan gets into the investigation the more it puts her in danger and Lugh's demons are on pins and needles trying to keep her safe.

Morgan's moral compass is definitely wavering. The idea of killing to preserve her demon isn't out of the question.

This series is really starting to hit its stride. Most of the key players have been introduced and, along with the "mystery" focus of each individual book, there are multiple story arcs that are slowly developing book to book.

The individual story for this book is a case of young man who goes from being a part of one of the most virulent anti-demon hate groups to a legal demon host within a span of two weeks. His mother is convinced that he was coerced in some manner.

Not much else to say about this one, except I'm half way through the next book already.

There is so much going on that I lose interest very quickly.
This is the 3rd book, we get it that Adam and Dom are into S&M. No need to keep saying it each chapter. What does that knowledge bring to the table? NOTHING.

I honestly feel like Morgan is one of the worse heroines I've had the displeasure to read about.

She is "so badass" gets beat up. So badass...she has one tattoo so she's super badass. So badass with 7 piercings. Constantly mentioning how badass one is doesn't make you badass, doing badass things does! Which Morgan does none of. She is unbelievably weak, closed-minded, unhelpful and irrelevant. This story could have been told by her brother and been better.

For 3 books, her and Brian have been so in love and blah blah blah. They have zero things in common, only have sex with each, and have zero chemistry. Brian could have been a dog, probably would have made him a better character. This whole series is carried on the backs of Adam and Dom.

Raphael is another character that carries these books. It's always a guessing game with him and gives you the most entertainment.

Lugh can permanently take over Morgan and I would be happy. Speaking of them. What's up with their flirty will they or won't they? It's super annoying. If you're going to go with the love triangle then do it, if not stop floating on the line.

I don't recommend this series to anyone!

This is the 3rd book of the series I've read, & they are all too similar, & thus repetitive. The MC never learns, & is incredibly hypocritical, judgemental & OTT bitchy (even to people who are trying to help), I found her hard to like or tolerate. She feels guilty about her actions/words after the fact, but doesn't change her attitude or apologise, or try to see things from another perspective. She's quite willing to let someone torture her brother & others, but won't look into her repressed memories. She has the advantage of having a mole, but risks that & therefore her family/friends (if she has any) & every human on earth!! because she can't get over herself. Also strange, considering she's the moral police, that she doesn't feel guilty about what she does with Lugh when she 'loves' her boyfriend Brian.

Exciting

If you like paranormal stories with strong heroines, and which ones aren’t, then you will enjoy this series. The author does a good job of recapping but really, this series needs to be read in order. I forgot what happened in the previous books except for a general idea, but I understood what was going on in the relationship is well enough without having to re-read the beginning of the series. The one thing about this series that bothers me, is the heroine, Morgan, is so stubborn she is almost Stephanie Plum like in her resistance to doing what I consider to be the wise thing. I feel she needs to be a more dynamic character and learn and change in her dealings with dangerous situations.

Ehh book 3 and 4 were a entertaining enough. Read the first two books a few years ago, remembered the heroine recently, and I hunted the series down into the far crevices of the internet.

Pros:
-Interesting, weird kinda unique plot
-Morgan's inner dialogue is both witty and pathetic shes overdramati but also funny
-Lugh is cool and entertaining, Brian is a sweet cinammon bun

Cons
-Mogan is annoying
-Raphaël is annoying
- Andy is annoying
- Adam is annoying
-New council member dude is annoying
- the whole cast of good guys are kind of bad guys and the bad guys are vile
-The whole demon possession thing doesn't sit well, especially since most of the demons are...evil don't have a moral compas (much easier for me to think of them as aliens

Reading this series back to back and Morgan Kingsley just gets deeper into the world of demons. She is amazingly resilient and comes out of every situation stronger and more knowledgeable.
Recommend this series it’s definitely addictive.
