This small Pennsylvania town once again becomes a hotbed of secrets.
Only Angel Warren, a retired Navy Pilot and owner of Shop ‘Round the World, can turn a summer day at the river into a murder investigation. But when her brother Bryce’s unicorn float snags on a corpse’s hand, suddenly Angel and Bryce are suspects. It doesn’t help that Angel knows the victim and was one of the last people to see Hank Price alive, or that Angel witnessed a disturbing argument between Hank and his wife. Plus, she and Bryce may have heard the shot that killed Hank.
Once more, Angel inserts herself into the middle of the investigation, this time with her best friend Detective Trinity Colson’s tacit approval. Who could have wanted Hank dead? Angel soon discovers Hank had a secret life that included sketchy business dealings and a gambling addiction.
The question isn’t how Angel will juggle her sleuthing alongside managing her gift store during the height of tourist season, family drama, and a burgeoning romance. It’s how will Angel solve the crime without stumbling into the killer’s sights?
Terrific second installment in the author's Shop 'Round the World series. This one picks up a few months after A Santa Stabbing. Summer has come to Stonebridge, and the tourist traffic has the cash register at the shop ringing. Angel also has some steady local customers like Verity Price. As the book opens, Verity is in the shop with her husband, Hank, checking on an order she placed. Angel is disturbed by the argument she witnesses between the couple but is distracted by the arrival of her boyfriend, Nate.
Later that day, Angel is set to spend quality time with her brother Bryce, tubing on the local river, Jacob's Run. I laughed at the unicorn float Bryce brought along for the cooler and munchies they took. The author's description of the setting was so vivid I could practically feel the cool breeze coming off the water. The trip is quite relaxing until the unicorn float gets caught on something in the water - and Angel discovers her second dead body since moving back to Stonebridge. What's worse, the body belongs to Hank Price, the man she'd seen just a few hours earlier.
Angel's connection to the deceased, her natural curiosity, and her earlier experience propelled her to want to know the truth behind this death. Fortunately, this time she has the willing permission of her best friend, Trinity, the town's lead detective, to involve herself in the investigation. The only catch is that she must keep Trinity informed each step of the way. I loved following Angel's progress as she put her intuition and logical mind to work. The investigation has some intriguing twists, including surprises about the chiropractic business and Hank's leisure activities. But when Angel stumbles over a vital clue, it puts her in the killer's sights. The final confrontation was a nail-biter but ended successfully. I liked the around-the-kitchen-table wrap-up that filled in all the blank spots.
Angel's family plays a more prominent role in this book. Her daughters are home from college for the summer and are involved in Angel's shop. Their love and concern for Angel are evident in their pleas for her to be careful. I liked the bits of their history as a Navy family that came out during the book, especially the benefits of their worldwide travel. There is also some concern about Angel's mother when she is the victim of a mysterious shooting. Is it related to Hank's murder or the archeological investigation into an ancient weir she is involved in?
Angel's BFF, Trinity, gets some extra page time, also. A visiting professor involved in the weir investigation makes quite the impression on her, which appears to be mutual. It will be interesting to see if that develops further in the next book.
Meanwhile, Angel's relationship with Nate is perking right along. Seeing the little things he does to brighten her day is very sweet. I had to laugh at the dinner he shared with Angel and her daughters, as he is not used to their teasing ways. He handled it well, and it is evident that both girls liked him. I enjoyed the last scene in the book, where Angel takes Nate flying.
In the delightfully entertaining second book in the Shop 'Round the World series, Geri Krotow interweaves solving a murder into the daily life of a retired Navy pilot, and the result is a book packed with intrigue and enthrallment. The plot repeatedly had me pondering numerous clues related to a homicide while also observing the daily routine of a strong-minded woman, where I was constantly caught up in all the happenings and eager to learn more. The author has a way of grabbing my full interest with her cleverly revealed information, and this kept my full attention from start to finish. A MID-SUMMER MURDER has a wonderful cast of colorful characters that seem so genuinely real along with totally believable developments.
After living in Stonebridge, Pennsylvania for slightly over a year, Angel Warren feels managing her own business is going very well. Deciding to open Shop 'Round the World which features international items turned out to be a great way to make money, and living near family members results in lots of fun interaction with them. One afternoon while tubing on a river with her brother, his float becomes stuck on something in the water. Shockingly, the object is a human body, and she had encountered the now dead man only a few hours earlier. Unfortunately for Angel, she is all too familiar with the process to report such an incident, as someone was previously killed in her shop. Though she certainly never wanted to become entangled in an investigation ever again, it appears that fate had other ideas.
Cozy mysteries are a favorite genre of mine, and the way in which Geri Krotow presents the storyline in her Shop 'Round the World series has made her books very riveting. I am kept guessing as to what actually took place all throughout the stories, and the various characters introduced in them keep things engrossing. I especially like Ralph the parrot with his likable nature plus the unwavering detective with whom Angel works.
In this book, Angel happens to be the one to discover a person who has recently been killed, and knowing the individual has her wanting to know why it occurred. As she subtly tries to unearth relevant facts, she finds any knowledge learned brings much satisfaction. I always felt as though Angel and everyone around her could exist as described, thus making the story come across as very convincing. There are some humorous moments from time to time, which caused a chuckle, while the more serious scenes captured my every thought and had me speculating. A MID-SUMMER MURDER is imaginatively descriptive and has a fascinating mystery.
This book was voluntarily reviewed, and all comments are my honest opinion
I received this arc of A Mid-Summer Murder in exchange for my honest review. This is the second book in the Shop Round the World Series by Geri Krotow. This was another exciting mystery featuring former navy pilot Angel Warren who has returned to her Pennsylvania hometown after 20 years. She opened an eclectic gift shop called Shop ‘Round the World and has been spending time with her family and old friends from high school. She was widowed many years ago and has recently started a relationship with Nate who owns the coffee shop. As the book opens, Angel and her brother have gone rafting in the local river. Suddenly, the raft gets snagged and they realize it is a hand. The dead person, Hank, is a local chiropractor that Angel had seen that morning in her shop.
This is the second dead body Angel has discovered since returning home. She calls her friend Trinity, the chief of police to report it. She and her brother are both suspects since they found it. Angel was also the one who found the prior body too and ended up helping to investigate the killer. Once again, she gets herself involved in the investigation. She promises Trinity she will share everything she discovers. Angel saw Hank and his wife in her shop earlier in the day and they were arguing.
Angel looks into the couple and their life as well as taking to others who knew them. She discovers Hank had a gambling problem and the finances of their chiropractic practice seem to be a mess. She does as promised and shares anything she learns with Trinity. Angel’s mother is part of the historical society along with Hank and they have been looking at the river and potential archaeological treasures. It is possible that those who don’t agree with their work could be behind this killing. As her business with her shop picks up, she finds herself trying to juggle everything.
This was an another terrific mystery by Geri. I enjoy the interactions between Angel and her family, old friends and her new love interest Nate. The clues were presented and I continued to guess who was the killer and what was the motive. Angel is a wonderful heroine and I enjoy it that’s she’s older as well. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next book.
I did not read the first book in the Shop 'Round the World series, but I had no trouble getting into A Mid-Summer Murder. This book takes place in Stone bridge, Pennsylvania, seven months after the first book ended. Angel Strooper Warren is a widowed, retired Naval pilot. She owns and operates Shop 'Round the World, which is a travel-inspited gift and novelty shop. One day while hanging out at the local creek--Jacob's Run with her brother--Bryce, she discovers a dead man. Her boyfriend--Nate and best friend Detective Trinity Colson know that she won't be able to rest until the murder is solved. I really enjoyed this cozy mystery. The characters are likable and main character Angel is a someone you can really root for. I look forward to seeing what Angel gets up to in future books.
A Mid-Summer Murder by Geri Krotow is book #2 in the Shop"Round the World series. Stonebridge is a quaint little town in Pennsylvania. It's very popular with tourists. Angel Warren, former Navy pilot, retires there to open Shop 'Round the World. In this book Angel tangles herself up in the murder investigation of chiropractor Hank Prince. I really enjoyed reading Angel's approach to solving the mystery. I like how curious, intelligent and determined she is. All the characters in this book are likable and well-developed. The dialogue is fun and very realistic. The storyline sure kept me guessing. I enjoy this author's writing style and look forward to more books in the series.
Small town fun and hijinks ensue with the second book in Geri Krotow's Shop 'Round the World cozy mystery series! Fans will recognize the lead character Angel and her feathered sidekick Ralph as the story picks up slightly after the holiday drama from book one. Book two was slightly slower to snag my attention, but once we got into the heart of the whodunnit part of the book I was immersed into figuring out who the culprit was. I loved boyfriend Nate and best friend Trinity's continuation in the series. I'm looking forward to seeing what else Angel will get herself into in the coming book(s).
This was a fun read. I loved getting to know the characters - they are realistic and believable, as is the scenery. I felt like I was really in Stonebridge and getting to know the shopkeepers. I’d love to stop in and grab a latte from Nate’s shop, or look around Angel’s store. The mystery part of the story is also well-done (though I will admit, I kind of knew who the perp was pretty early on, but not the motive). And the mixture of pets was fun—especially Nate’s dog and Angel’s parrot. They both add a bit of levity to the story.
This story is full of some great pets or animals! From Angel’s wise-cracking parrot, Ralph, to Nate’s sweet big dog Mach, for Macchiato! When Angel and her brother decide to go tubing on the river, their snack tube snags on something that turns out to be the dead body of Hank! Although, police detective Trinity is investigating the case, Angel feels the need to also investigate, since she discovered the body. It’s a complicated and convoluted case that is sure to keep your interest!
I really enjoyed reading this book It was engaging And the story line was interesting. It is the second in the series of 3 books so far And I have Enjoyed reading the 1st 2. The writer crafts a good The writer crafts a good story Which I really enjoy. I'm not a little literary analyst So I'm not gonna tell you How well written was, I'm a reader who enjoys reading good stories That keep me engaged This 1 did that.
Ok story line . Murderer comes out of left field when an obvious clue is revealed. A bit far fetched at times but likable characters and lots of dogs! There things bothered me -not everyone has read book one so stop referring to it so often. Also, her family loves her and cares for her. Being told once was enough. And the reader can intuitively know that an amateur trying to solve a murder needs to have limits on her activities.
I found this book in a box on the street. Someone had discarded it, and I felt that I needed to give it a home. I also read it. For me, three stars means that I liked it, but didn't love it.
I've read a great many mysteries and this one doesn't stand out enough from the pack to get a higher grade.
Book 2 of this series is just as fun as the first one. It's a lovely place to go. The characters are so likable, the town feels homey and warm. I absolutely love settling down and reading these books. The mystery was a good one, I didn't guess the bad guy. I'm definitely heading to book 3!
I enjoyed reading this. A wonderful mix of international and local history. Good mystery with out horror or blood and gore. And all the pets and their owners units adds charm.
This is a good series of murder mysteries. Each one is different but a strong set of main characters who live in a small town in Pennsylvania. The killer is not discovered until the end.
Angel is at it again, in book two of this series! She comes across a dead man from her small town of Stonebridge. She works with her cop best friend to solve the case!
