Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology

Rate this book
The fifth edition of Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology has been substantially revised and updated, providing students with the most readable and comprehensive survey of research methods, statistical conceps, and procedures in psychology today.
The book assumes no prior knowledge, taking the student through every stage of their research project in manageable steps. Advice on planning and conducting studies, analyzing data, and writing up practical reports is given, and examples are provided, as well as advice on how to report results in conventional (APA) style.
Unlike other introductory texts, there is practical guidance on qualitative research, as well as discussion of issues of bias, interpretation, and variance. Content on qualitative methods has been expanded for the fifth edition and now includes additional material on widely used methods, such as grounded theory, thematic analysis, interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA), and discourse analysis.
The book provides clear coverage of statistical procedures, and includes everything needed at an undergraduate level from nominal level tests, to multi-factorial ANOVA designs, multiple regression, and log linear analysis. In addition, the book provides detailed and illustrated SPSS textbook.
Each chapter contains a self-test glossary, key terms, and exercises, ensuring that key concepts have been understood. Students are further supported. Students are further supported by an accompanying website that provides additional exercises, revision flash cards, links to further reading, and data for use with SPSS. The website will also include updated coverage of SPSS should a new version be launched.
The bestselling research methods text for over a decade, Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology remains an invaluable resource for students of psychology throughout their studies.

Generally interesting content but very poorly written and suffers with a serious case of academese. There are times when you question whether the author even knows what he is trying to say. Definitions throughout which is nice but they are poorly worded making simple concepts seem more challenging than they are. Would not recommend - especially to the students it is supposedly meant for.

Two pages in, and it's already deriding "intuitive thinkers" (in fact conflating them with non-thinkers) and attacking "anti-vaxxers" setting psychologists up as these superior thinking human beings. Psychology is completely infected with narcissim and would be much better off if it stopped parading around like a legitimate science and got to the business of actually helping people.

Suffering. Pure and utter suffering. Gatekeeping of knowledge that could be accessible if Coolican could "talk" like a normal person. Yes, the material is difficult in itself and I am bad at statistics ... but it doesn't help that the textbook was written in academese. Can't wait for the exam...

Overall a great book.
+Lots covered, split into chapters that follow on from each other.
+The last chapter helpfully points out flaws in a paper, then shows a corrected version.

I found the book starts with easy reading, then gets difficult mid-way through. Likely an easy-moderate read to somebody with research experience.

Loved Coolican! Reliably clear, insightful and personal. His writing minimised the pain of reading on the subject matter, such that it was okay to wade through all those mathematical equations unnecessarily (SPSS does the maths anyway these days). A great text on quantitative method.

(About the 7th edition published in 2019):

Very good introduction book that covered the basics and was clear and even enjoyable to read. We had to read this for our psychology research methods introduction course.
