Are the woes of the present meant to be endured for the promise of a better future or to atone for past wrongs? In a captivating epic of love, fate and faith, seven young people must struggle with this spiritual puzzle as their alien past lives threaten the future.
Final Volume!
Eight-year-old Rin is still tormented by his past life. As Shion, an engineer stationed on Earth's moon, he spent nine years alone after his home planet was annihilated and a deadly virus took the lives of his fellow scientists. Now, in the conclusion to the Please Save My Earth series, his plot to destroy the moon base--and all traces of his past life--reaches its dénouement. Alice begs Rin not to let his past life as Shion rule his future--and even threatens to jump off Tokyo Tower if Rin chooses to pursue his plot of eventually controlling the world...
Saki Hiwatari (日渡早紀 in Japanese) is a Japanese shōjo manga artist. Her first work, "Mahōtsukai wa Shitteiru" was published in the weekly shōjo anthology Hana to Yume in 1982.
What on earth are y'all smoking and where can I get some of that. I've gotten lord knows how many recommendations for this series and I just. don't. see it. It started off well enough, so I can appreciate the high-ish ratings for the first few volumes, but it only gets worse and I don't know where it went wrong.
First of all, nope. NOPE. BIG FAT NOPE to all of you falling for the "romance" and tryna tell me but it's the spiiiiirit of a full-grown man in the bodyyyyyy of an eight year old booooyy.
NOPE. Get your crack away from me. Rin is an eight year old child and this story trying to posit him as the romantic lead because his memories are that of a 20-something year old man . . . and y'all falling for it?? I mean. Gross. Go out to your closest schoolyard. Look around at those eight year old boys. Are you seriously telling me you can believably imagine him and even support the idea of that kid as a romantic lead, engaged with a 16/17 year old female?
You gonna tell me if one of them turned out to be a child prodigy, smarter than any guy your own age, you could see yourself romantically falling for that kid?
If your answer to any of those question is yes, then perhaps you should stay away from any schoolyards.
Second of all, Rin is an irredeemable, shit-stirrer of a character. Every wrong and bad thing that happens in this series is a product of his own . . . his own . . . what? Boredom? He has no motive behind anything!
Woe is me I was the last human alive, suffering in loneliness because someone made sure I would die alone, now I want to DESTROY THE WORLD! Oh, no, I actually don't, I want to DESTROY THE MACHINE THAT CAN DESTROY THE WORLD. . . but in the meantime, I want to make everyone else suffer as well because no one understaaaands me, waaaaaa.
And yet everyone bends over backwards trying to "pull him out of his darkness" or whatever the FUCK it is they think is going on with him. RIN HAS ALWAYS BEEN A SHITTY HUMAN BEING, EVEN BEFORE HE HAD TO LIVE AS THE LAST MAN ALIVE!
Being an orphan does NOT justify his temperament, his shitty way of looking at other people. He had SO many people growing up who cared for him, he had SO many friends circling around him, but he always chose to create negative motives behind everyone around him when it's really just a reflection of his own mindset.
The way the story constantly pushes this redeeming arc on him is so frustrating, so forced, so underwhelming. Did y'all forget he-as-Shion RAPED Alice-slash-Mokuren? And then it was, like, brushed aside because Mokuren decided she loved him after all? Except secretly she didn't? Or did she? GOD FUCKING KNOWS because that's how unclear everything was. Not that it matters. He's a fucking rapist who tries to justify himself post-facto because he "wanted her to love him" or what-the-fuck-ever.
Rin-slash-Shion gave absolutely zero moments where they showed any signs they were capable of love, remorse, guilt, and yet we were forced to root for the characters who wanted to save him from this endless torture of hatred. He was made to suffer ZERO consequences, and in fact the only time he got what he deserved was when he was made to live the rest of his life alone on the literal fucking moon, surrounded by the dead bodies of his colleagues.
And finally, Alice.
What a waste of space.
Mokuren, the perfect little princess literally every guy falls in love with, SHE showed much more personality and gusto than the absolute passive push-over that was Alice. She did not push the story onwards, it was constant reaction after reaction of events. She was just so boring and dull, I couldn't wait to get through her chapters.
Unfortunately the more interesting characters were left to the backburners in preference for our two main leads: Rin-Shion and Alice-Mokuren. Out of those four, only Mokuren was tolerable and sometimes even fun to read.

I'm a huge manga fan. And Please Save my Earth is one of those manga I find myself re-visiting often. And whenever I do, I get flooded by feels just as if I was reading it for the very first time. It's one of these manga that I would recommend for anyone, and here are the reasons;
1. DOUBLE STORY-LINES
Please Save My Earth tells not one story - but two. The first one is of six modern day teenagers and one eight year old child who have memories of their past lives. Those memories and personalities interfere with their present lives, especially for the eight year old.
The other story-line is that of their past lives - seven alien scientists from planets far more advanced than earth who were stationed on the moon and died there from an outbreak, which led to them being reborn on earth.
Please Save My Earth expertly weaves together the two stories, one a tale of finding a way to release the memories and finding one's self, and the other a heartbreaking tragedy tinged with hope, making you desperate to know more about both and specifically the characters of the leading four: Rin and Alice and their past selves Shion and Mokuren.
Every character in this manga series is just so flawed and imperfect, in the most lovable way. You will love them to pieces, because they're real and gray and layered and they're not just one thing or the other. That's why the story looks slightly different from every character's eyes.
Also, this idea of reincarnation is way cool. I hope I was an alien in a past life.
2. MAKES YOU BELIEVE LOVE HAS NO AGE LIMIT
This is probably the one most people are going to have the biggest reserves about. Please Save My Earth features many complicated and layered romantic relations/feelings. But the main two are something even beyond that.
The first relationship happens in the past; between two scientists aboard the Moon Base. One is a man who only knows war, fear and loneliness, he has a very weak grasp of what love is and he is afraid of it. The other is a woman who receives adoration from everyone around her because of her abilities and beauty, but only wants one person to love her for herself. imagine you had the memories of this love. This wretched, often misguided love that ended before having enough time to blossom because of the disease. And imagine that you're now eight years old, and the woman you've loved --and presently love-- is nine years older than you and has no idea about anything.
I bet you just went "Whaaa?"
Yes, there is a giant age gap. And it's the type of age gap that bothers people more because the woman is older (not that I understand the double standard there). And yes, the boy is incredibly young. But if you read the manga, you see all those are just incorrect assumptions--or rather, meaningless ones.
Because Rin, the boy in question, is more adult than child due to his memories, and the love he feels for Alice is not some fleeting infatuation, but the real deal. And even if you're skeptic at first, by the end of the manga you will believe this love with all of your being.
3. GIVES YOU ALL THE FEELS
Yes, I cry. Every. single. time.
It's like, I can't deal with all these emotions, from the past and from the present. You get so in-tune with these characters that you can't separate yourself from them so when you see their tragic pasts; you are sure to cry. When you see the past trying to take their present and making them miserable; you are going to cry! And when you see them finally grasping happiness after everything... you guessed it; you will cry!

Honestly, one of the more underrated manga out there, despite being somewhat of a pioneer in the Shoujo genre in Japan - I highly recommend it to everyone out there. The art-style is very eighties (if you read manga, you probably know what I mean) but another nice aspect of the manga is watching it evolve and get some fineness as the series progresses.

In ye olden days (back when I had to buy anime on VHS TAPES) I bought the Please Save My Earth OAV series. It was the first 5 - 6 volumes of the manga adapted into several tv length episodes. There were short clips of scenes that happened later in the series but it still ended with a massive cliffhanger. For decades I never knew what happened aside from what I found on a few random fan websites. Despite it's flaws, I'd still say to this day it's one of my top 5 anime/manga series of all time. If you've never heard the OAV soundtrack, the ending theme is haunting. It's one of the earliest anime series that composer Yoko Kanno worked on (think Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, etc.) although the majority of the soundtrack is the work of Hajime Mizoguchi. Other famous manga artists like Naoko Takeuchi (Sailor Moon) and Bisco Hatori (Ouran High School Host Club) have mentioned this work as being highly influential to them. Funny enough, I once even read an interview with author CS Pacat who claimed this as one of their favorite manga.
Anyways, all that rambling to say that I finally got to read the manga in it's entirety nearly 25 years after watching the OAV series. I was randomly looking up manga in Overdrive/Libby and there it was. It's still very niche, and weird, and there's a literal child as the story's main villain. But I love the way the story talks about growth, and change, and how do you grow from your mistakes. I think it might also be the first time I saw a character who was LGBTQ+. I fully admit that this is like 80% nostalgia talking but I couldn't rate it any less than 4 stars.
I’m sure if I had read this series as a teen I would have felt differently about these characters, but as an adult woman I really couldn’t find any enjoyment on the romance side.
The art, the way the many parts of the story come together – it’s all very impressive in a good way. I’m just sad it is marred by the stain of what the series considers “love”.
Finally, finally, I got around to reading PSME. This story spoke to my very soul.
I already knew of this series, I kept seeing it everywhere since I was a kid and I always thought the title and book cover were beautiful, yet I'm not sure why it took me so long to read it. I read all the volumes in a couple of days. I didn't expect it to be that good. This manga is- wow. It's so complicated and confusing, I love it. And the art is gorgeous, detailed, consistent and refreshing. Very personal and unique compared to the generic art styles seen nowadays.
As for the story, I haven't read anything so well-written and structured since... Angel Sanctuary, maybe? (Kaori Yuki's work is my absolute favourite, I believe Saki Hiwatari's is going to be a close second)
This was a story within a story and they intertwined perfectly. Both past and future timelines and their characters were written and developed masterfully, the themes and dialogues weren't trivial or shallow, but profound. The concepts of Sarjalim and reincarnation, the love, hurt and promises through the ages, everything about PSME spoke to my soul.
This is awaking an itch in me to go and read all the older shojos I have not prioritized yet like From Far Away and Red River. There was something special in the air of manga of this time that we can't find in current works. And I need more of it.
Yes I have apprehensions about the romance, and will just choose to ignore it for my own sake. I am 23 years old today and the thought of dating a 15 year old truly makes me shiver. And then think that Rin was even younger then that ..... But I guess there is some appeal for younger audiences, it was the 80s and love transcendes time and all that ... I guess.
Beyond that, this is a series I will think about a lot moving forward and I can't wait to revisit is again in the future.
A decent conclusion to the series. A little bit more action than many previous volumes, and I liked the little glimpses of the characters futures. SERIES REVIEW: Overall I enjoyed the series but was somewhat disappointed, it felt like a LOT of the conversations/discussions about feelings were really drawn out, and would have preferred to learn more about the science and history of the alien worlds as well.
Overall, a really fascinating series. So many parts were just breathtakingly beautiful - artwork and writing. However, being an older series of the late 80's and early 90's, it definitely has some problematic ways of handling things and I was not impressed by parts of the conclusion. I wish there could have been more, and that important/triggering topics could have been handled more sensitively, but overall I still really enjoyed the series as a whole and it gave me so much to think about.
Would re-read the entire series over and over again. It’s super good and deep and very rich with plot, character development, and everything you would want to have in a story. This is one for the ages even though not many people know about this series. Give it a fighting chance and you won’t regret it. :)
I'm leaving this review on the final volume because I read it in a different format from print manga.
I first heard of Please Save My Earth one day walking through a video store and saw the OAV for pretty cheap. Picking it up on a whim, I watched it and promptly got confused. So much happened so quickly, the difference between past and present lives was confusing, not to mention having nearly 20 major and secondary characters to remember. I watched the six episodes, saw the confusing ending that wasn't, and filled myself in with some of the special features. It wasn't a great experience, but I never forgot it.
Fast forward about seven years and I decided that I had a bit of time, I might as well try reading the manga. There had been some fascinating elements to the anime, and with 21 volumes of manga, the written version had to be better.
I was wrong.
It was great.
Even knowing so much of the plot from the anime, I was completely caught up in the drama and mystery of Please Save My Earth. I loved being able to truly get to know all the characters in both lives, and to be able to truly tell them apart by more than hairstyle. The manga was also much darker than I anticipated, but it dealt with dark subjects in a skillful fashion - neither dwelling on them nor taking them lightly.
Finishing Please Save My Earth gave me the satisfaction of reading a story that came to its logical conclusion, even if I couldn't predict all of it. I was cheering for our heroes, glaring at our villains, and generally getting thoroughly immersed in the world it created. I will be recommending this to any friends who have even vague interest.
