You Betcha!: The Witless Wisdom of Sarah Palin

Rate this book
A hilarious collection of the stubbornly ignorant and shockingly ludicrous remarks made by former Alaskan governor and 2008 Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin compiled by New York Times best-selling author Leland Gregory. Includes B&W photographs.

Alaskan governor Sarah Palin launched onto the national political scene in 2008 when she was unexpectedly chosen as John McCain's running mate. Soon after, her oratory foibles, shaky stance on political policy, and ignorance of national/world affairs became priceless fodder for journalists and comedians. Now New York Times best-selling human stupidity historian Leland Gregory sets his sights on everyone's favorite rogue hockey-mom in You Betcha! The Witless Wisdom of Sarah Palin .

Whether she's bagging on the President at a Tea Party, waging war on Family Guy, or slandering Bristol's ex-beau, one thing's for certain--Sarah Palin loves to be heard. Gregory has hunted down Palin's most cringe-worthy comments, including excerpts from the infamous Katie Couric interview, her acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, and sketchy explanations for her resignation as governor. Death panels, helicopter moose hunting, and all of her magic maverick moments are included in this anthology of photos, quotes, and anecdotal material that is sure to keep readers laughing so hard they'll want to cry.

This a quick, funny, tongue-in-cheek compendium of Sarah Palin's many stupid utterances. My son kindly got it for me after I lost out on a copy of The Wit & Wisdom of Sarah Palin in a white elephant exchange. That book was just blank pages with a laugh-out-loud cover. This one actually has words inside: word salad and jumbled metaphors extracted from Palin's speeches, interviews and social media posts (and even a prank phone call). She is ignorant and proud of it, unwilling to let her lack of education or nonexistent grasp of world politics cow her into silence, let alone basic humility. We are reminded of how frighteningly close this willful idiot got to being Vice President, and how instrumental Palin was in watering the nascent seeds of populism, anti-intellectualism and Trumpism in the United States. It's humor tinged with horror. I'll leave you with a few quotes:

"Now like a lot of you, perhaps, I have spent the last year thinking about how to best serve. How can I help our country? How can I make sure that I, that you, that we're in a position of nobody being able to succeed?"

"How about that amazing closing ceremony [of the Winter Olympics]. It was beautiful. The minute I saw the giant moose, I remembered I hadn't cooked anything for the kids' dinner."

"We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada. And I think now, isn't that ironic?"

"They are also building schools for the Afghan children so that there is hope and opportunity in our neighboring country of Afghanistan."

"As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?" (In an interview after McCain chose her as his VP running mate.)

"I'm the mayor. I can do whatever I want until the courts tell me I can't."

I will be re-reading this as part of the Summer 2012 Reading Challenge in the Dare to Dream Group. You Betcha!: The Witless Wisdom of Sarah Palin will meet the following criteria (no, I'm not cheating - I'm using the entire title & subtitle to meet one of the requirements - I am playing fair, you can trust me):

July 4th-Independence Day in USA-

Read a book this summer with a RED, WHITE OR BLUE book cover (or combo of these colors) (post the book cover)

July 2012 is Cord Blood Awareness month

Read a book this summer that has the letters B-L-O-O-D in the title (these letters do not have to be in order)

August 26th is Women's Equality Day

Read a book this summer in which the main character is a FEMALE HEROINE

This is a quick & amusing read. I picked it up at my Borders store closing sale. This is a collection of Sarah Palin Quotes spanning 2008-2010 from various speeches and interviews. In a few explanations, I didn't agree with the author's conclusions about what Palin was really trying to saying, but overall I enjoyed this entertaining collection.

Here are some of my (shorter) favorites:

"All of 'em, any of 'em that have been in front of me over all these years."
Sarah Palin, unable to give the name of any newspaper or magazine she reads, in an interview with Katie Couric, CBS News, October 1, 2008

"Certainly, accounting for different conditions in that different country and conditions are certainly different."
Sarah Palin, Vice- Presidential Debate with Senator Joseph Biden, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, October 2, 2008

"Nah, absolutely not necessarily."
Sarah Palin, when asked by Matt Lauer if she is the future of the GOP, NBC's Today Show, July 12 2009

"Still, when I see this administration in action, I can't help think of what might have been. I could be the vice president overseeing the signing of bailout checks. And Joe Biden would be on the road, selling his new book, Going Rogaine."
Sarah Palin, Gridiron Club Dinner, December 5, 2009, Washington, D.C

"How about that amazing closing ceremony [of the Winter Olympics]. It was beautiful. The minute I saw the giant moose, I remembered I hadn't cooked anything for the kids' dinner."
Sarah Palin, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, March 2, 2010

"We North Americans, we come from the stock of our ancestors."
Sarah Palin, speech at Carmen's Banquet Hall in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, benefiting Charity of Hope,Globe and Mail, April 16, 2010
