A Priest, a Rabbi and a Pastor are playing cards. There isn't a punchline, it is the opening of this book.

Big Bucks! is the 3rd in a trilogy from Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles (Raving Fans & Gung Ho!) that describe the long term success of an organization.

3 Tests:

#1 The Test of Joy- you can't make big bucks unless you're having fun
#2 The Test of Purpose- Making money has to be more important than having fun (hobby vs a business)
#3 The Test of Creativity- Create revenue (first set the goal, then you will start to see creative options of how to achieve it)

The Final Test

Perpetual Prosperity Comes to those who Help Others (not just through money, but through acts of service , time)

One must balance success vs. significance:

Wealth vs. Generosity
Achievement vs. Service
Status vs. Relationships

Life isn't about money, money is just a tool to meet our needs and the needs of others

Some of my favorite quotes:

"The only risk-free environment comes when you're dead"

"It isn't thinking that clears the mind. It's making decisions."

Blanchard and Bowles put it well, “helping people is a gift of yourself – your time, your energy, your caring, your knowledge, your creativity”. Paul hoped that we would give graciously to meet the needs of others and not just excel in faith, speech, and knowledge (2 Cor 8:7, KJV).

We must focus on giving ourselves to meet another's needs, not giving to meet our own needs (Blanchard & Bowles, 2000). This differs from what the norm dictates. To some of us, this might not be a choice you make on your own – when our parents passed on, naturally, the buck fell on me as the eldest son living even though I was not ready then to be the breadwinner because, without any source of income, I could hardly support myself let alone my siblings.

In times like this, our understanding is shaped to believe that helping others is a function of how and where we stand financially. This has been a source of strive over the years with those closest to me. We will meet many challenges in life and many of those will be directly or remotely linked to finances.

We are products of people’s kindness who turned up when we least expected and some of these nice people gave and did not ask questions – how we come to that place where we are comfortable with generosity, giving selflessly without expecting anything in return will be just as important as the journey itself. I know now from observing one of my main benefactors that it was never about the money, they simply answered the call in their hearts when they felt the conviction and went out of their way to do this.

Read it given it was from Ken Blanchard but honestly didn’t get anything new after completing the book. It is like selling old wine in old bottle.

The answers to most of the business/moral dilemmas of a businessman. At times it seems the book tries to be keep things simple but yet it understandably slides in caveats to prevent the reader from going to extremities. But otherwise if a mature reader would understand where the author is coming from.
