Have you ever wondered how a trial lawyer can sleep at night after helping a client he/she knows is guilty, beat the legal system? I have. Have you ever wondered how an attorney would feel if that same recently acquitted client kills a second time? Again, I have, and these very questions prompted me to write a dark legal/mystery/thriller about just such an attorney--I call it DEFENDING EVIL 2.0.
Travis Knight is an extraordinary Criminal Defense Attorney winning high profile cases in Atlanta. One of his recently acquitted clients kills again, which has Travis and his wife Julie, questioning what he does for a living. Travis is shaken to his core, but being a consummate lawyer, he is able to move past his feelings of guilt; Julie isn’t.
In a bizarre twist, a mysterious vigilante begins executing Travis’ clients after he wins them an acquittal. This righteous vigilante decides that the clients Travis is helping to put back into society are guilty, and don't deserve to live--the vigilante delivers ultimate justice.
The police only half-heartedly search for the vigilante-off the record, they are glad someone is cleaning-up after the hot-shot attorney.
The vigilante's attention turns to the source, and sends Travis an ultimatum--stop defending guilty clients or he will be the next to be executed. Risking his life, and his marriage, Travis refuses to be intimidated, and continues to defend clients accused of murder.
This story chronicles the labyrinth of high-speed twists and turns of a deadly cat-and-mouse game--a game that can end with only one winner.
I have read the first 4 chapters of this book so far and it is very difficult to force myself to continue reading. Someone should have edited this book. There are missing words, word confusion errors, paragraphing problems, and extremely stilted characters and dialogue. I am hoping it will get better!
After now having read more than half the book and checking Amazon to see if others agreed with my above assessment, I find that most are in agreement with me. The book itself would have been an enjoyable read IF I had no idea what correct grammatical construction, spelling, or punctuation looked like. However, since I am a native speaker of English, and since I am more than semi-literate, I found the book to be very inadequate and one I would expect to be written by a very limited speaker of English.
There are two versions of this book available (both on Amazon for Kindle). The first (just called "Defending Evil") is the initial release. "Defending Evil 2.0" is an updated and professionally edited version.
The version I read was the original. It suffered greatly by the lack of editing. My rating is purely based on the premise and story line. However the lack of editing in the original version was distracting. Anyone considering purchasing should make sure they get "Defending Evil 2.0".
Very good. Makes you think what You would do if you were a defense lawyer and how you could live with your choices. Very interesting, but ended too quickly and had some things at the end concerning the law partner that I thought were pointless. Yet, the author missed a whole storyline on the fact of who was actually following who. That should have been explored more, especially considering the profession of the follower. But, a very good book!
