Meet Laura. She's the tall girl holding two stray cats. Laura loves caring for animals. But lately, the animals in the forest near her home have been strange. Bats swarm and attack in broad daylight . On her walks, Laura hears eerie howls and inhuman cries. And now, she is about to meet another animal. 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. This is one of the most shocking and disturbing middle-grade horror books Stine has written. And I mean that in a good way. This has a solid story with a nice mystery going on and lots of surprises along the way. So far this is my favorite Nightmare Room book.
It has been forever sense I've read a Nightmare Room book .I figured I'd start with one that I've heard great things about from multiple people, They Call Me Creature. The story begins with our protagonist Laura ,a girl who loves animals .She's tending to a bird with a broken wing trying to get some assistance from her dad but her dad brushes her off asking her does she have to live in a zoo. This shocks Laura because her dad has changed alot. He use to walk in the woods with her, spend alot of time with her and all that stuff but every sense Laura's dad lost his job at an animal hospital he's changed. Laura leaves him to go outside and take pictures for her science project ,pictures of animals and plants. She's gotten a few pictures of plants but can't seem to find any animals .She eventually sees this flock of birds acting weird and her dad tells her she needs to stay out of the woods . That's not the only place to stay away from though .Her dad is doing some experiments in this shed that she also cannot enter. Her and a friend Ellen go trying to take pictures when they stumble upon a finger in the grass. I know what everyone that's read an R.L. Stine book is thinking, chapter cliff hanger .No it's an actual finger .After this ,it's weird event after weird event. We get bat attacks ,jeeps prowling the woods with something inside a trailer, that I won't say . This is another book I think you should go in blindly. I didn't guess half the twists in this book. I got one thing right the rest was insane, not to mention this is one of the gorier books from Stine and that's including Fear Street, with a higher body count if you include animals .I highly recommend They Call Me Creature from the Nightmare Room. it's easily the best of the series so far. I give it a four out of five stars. The only reason it's not getting a five is I think the explanation is super confusing ,but that could be just me.
Titolo inaspettatamente interessante.
Aha! Just found this book in a second hand bookshop and surely it can cure my longing of my childhood fantasy. I read it in once sit, hehe. Even though the series of The Nightmare Room is just almost the same with those of Goosebumps, I still do like it. It's a story about a girl named Laura Atkins who lives surrounded by the woods and a lot of animals. She likes them both and always feels like home being in the woods and surrounded by the animals. But unfortunately, there's an animal, oh not sure an animal-just call it creature- lurking in the woods that Laura will be sorry she met. In fact that there are so many creatures hiding in the woods and act so strangely beast and make any other animals frightened. The creature is half human and half animal, it has bald head, ears of a pig, a tail of a horse, and face of a human. That creature doesn't belong in that woods or just doesn't belong anywhere. Besides, Laura's father has been acting so strangely. He used to be a vet, but just got fired from an animal hospital. He has a shed between the house and the woods, the place where he hides a secret, the place that sometimes Laura hears a sound of a painful voice of animals. But he always keeps that shed locked. With curiosity, Laura sneaks to that shed. And after she knows what's in that, her father wants her to stay away and eagerly to send her to Chicago where her mother lives. You'd may be thinking something wrong with her father, the shed and the woods, but it's not R.L. Stine if he doesn't gives us a twist in the end of the story. I give this story a three-star. Why?? Simply because I read it just now, it might be different if I read it fourteen years ago :)

Surprisingly creepy and gory stuff from Mr. Stine. A creepy woodland atmosphere, some imaginatively horrific creatures, and a heavy dose of gore and body horror make this a treat for those of us who enjoy children's horror. Shades of stuff like "Don't Go in the Basement," but I found this much more meaty (literally) and horrifying.
They Call Me Creature Laura tries to get her dad’s attention. She has a bird whose wing is broken but he hasn’t been the same since he lost his job at the animal hospital. He’s become a grouch. Laura and Ellen (her best friend) decide to go into the woods. Laura says it's because she wants to work on her science project. Ellen knows it's because Laura wants to see a cute boy named Joel. They agree she has two reasons. When they’re about to leave, they see a swarm of blackbirds. Hundreds of birds emerge from the woods. They circle the woods. Dad comes out and says something has them stirred up and begs Laura not to go into the woods.
Laura says she has to go. Dad takes off running into the woods. The screeching stops. The birds disappear back where they came. Georgie (Laura’s German Shepard) follows them into the woods. Her assignment is to photograph plant and animal life at the pond. She’s having trouble finding animals. Ellen asks her if she thinks some big animals scared the birds. They then hear howls coming from the garden shed. Laura says she doesn’t know what’s going on. Her dad won’t let her near the shed and he keeps the door locked. Laura admits she doesn’t know why her dad got fired. Ellen says her dad was going out with Mr. Carpendter but she dumped him. Laura doesn’t think so but then again why would her dad just leave?
Laura changes the subject and they start talking about yher upcoming party. Georgie starts to sniff at a pile of dead leaves. He pulls out a human finger. Laura picks the finger up and palms it so Ellen won’t see (planning to show it to her dad). She finds a woodpecker to photograph. Ellen leaves and Laura is alone. She waits and then hears footsteps after a while. It’s just Joe. They have a conversation about if she found anything to photograph and if he caught anything. Laura decides to ask him to her bday party. There are some birds that fly out of sight. The sky goes dark, the birds fly off, and they hear bats. Joe pushes Laura down and Joe yells at her to get down and cover her head. They bombard Laura's attacking. She calls for Joe but there’s no answer. Joe is fighting off bats. One is at his throat. One is in his hair. He’s able to get away from them. Laura says her dad will take a look at his cuts, but he refuses and runs off into the woods. Laura tries to invite him to the party but he’s gone.
(Laura is throwing this party for Ellen. It’s not *her* party) Laura wants to tell her dad about the attack, but he’s in the shed. Later after she talks to Ellen (who tells her not to invite a boy named Steve) she goes out to the shack. It’s not closed. Dad’s giving an animal an injection. Her dad yells at her to get out. Laura feels alone and scared of her own father.
Later he apologizes. She asks what he’s doing and he says he can’t discuss it. He tells her it might be best if she lives with her mother for a while. Laura doesn’t accept this. She wants to live by the woods. He says he has to do what’s best for her. She promises she won’t go near the shed and she won’t ask him any more questions. But to herself, she vows to find out his secret. In the middle of the night, Lauren sees lights out the window and goes out to investigate, but when she goes outside they’re gone. She hears the whimpers coming from the shed but before she can go get the key something knocks her to the ground. It’s Georgie. The noise alerts her dad. He asks what she’s doing outside and she tells him about the lights. He asks if she was trying to get in the shed and she lies and says no. When he goes to bed, he slips the key back in its place. Laura decides the next day to go talk to Mrs. Carpenter at the animal hospital.
Dr. Carpenter says she had to let him go because they wanted to take their research in different directions. The Dr. gets a phone call and keeps saying “You shouldn’t bait him.” When Laura gets home her dad isn’t there so she tries the shack. Joe tells her she won’t get in that way. While they’re talking Georgie turns on laura and starts to attack. Joe is able to make him retreat and slink away. Neither of them know what happened. They think it might have been a smell on Laura or perhaps he sensed the animal hospital on her. After telling him why she went and making him promise not to tell, Joe leaves. Again she doesn’t get the chance to ask him to the party. Laura then sees a jeep decoarated in camouflage in the middle of the woods and from inside she hears an animal howling.
Laura sees that the men have rifflses. One of them asks why they’re catching “these things”. The other says maybe their boss is starting a zoo. They agree that they have to get it out of there before it eats a whole in the trailer. It might be a little hard to explain if they don’t. Laura runs home to tell her dad but there’s a camera over the door. The camra takes her picture but she opens the door and lets herself into the shed. She finds a notebook with the world FAILURE.. If we kill them what could we find. Laura leaves the shed. She finds a raccoon to phogragh. Then she sees the camoflauge van again but the men see her. She can’t outgrow them so she ddecides to ask them what’s going on. They tell her it’s not a good time to be in the woods. She tells them she’s working on a project and then tells them what kind of animals. They ask if she explores the woods a lot and sees anything strange. She says not really, but they come at her riffles raised.
The bald one demands the camera and tugs it off her neck. He takes out the film cartridge and ruins it. When Laura asks whats in there he says it’s a sick deer and they’re taking it to be treated. They tell her don’t take pictures and pull off. Laura knows they’re lying. Sick deers don’t kick that hard if tranquilized, On the way back, she sees a pig. It has two rows of pointed teeth. She decides to take it home. The creature bites her and she starts to bleed. Laura realizes it’s feeding from her. Dad comes and pries the animal off. Then it runs off. Dad takes her to Dr. Davis. He tells him it was a chipmunk. Laura wonders why he lied. The Dr says he’ll give her a blood test, sews up the wound, and says he’ll prescribe her some antibiotics. On the way back, Dad fobds Laura from going into the woods.
She overhears him talking on the phone to her mom. He says he has to get out of there. While telling Ellen everything, Laura sees a large dog out the window running into the woods. Then she sees Georgie lying on his side. Georgie’s leg has been chewed off. The bone is poking through. Dad comes out and then tries to slow the bleeding. They carry him to the vet. Laura tells her dad the creature was running on four legs and then it ran into the woods on two. Dad tells them they’re going to Walker Falls two hours away. He tells Laura don’t argue with him and she realizes he can’t go to the animal hospital. She wonders what horrible thing he did. Lsuts hord to Dr. Carpenterr but she still doesn’t get any answers. She gives her an injection and tells her to come back and they’ll talk some more. She warns her to stay out of the woods. Laura sees Joe later and tells him what happened. She finally asks him to the party and he says yes. He invites her for a walk to the pond and they talk until dinner time. Then Laura gets the idea fo follow joe home to see where he lives, but she loses him. She spots a shack in the clearing. It seems deserted. But when she looks inside there are bones and animal heads. As she starts to leave, she sees the van. The jeep starts to pursue her and then stops in front of her. When a man gets out it’s her dad.
He tells her to get in. Then forces her inside when she demands she tell him what’s going on. A week goes by. Laura starts to feel worse and the wound on her neck starts to throb. On the day of Ellen’s party he prepares for the party. The party is going great! Laura sees her father disappear into the shack with the warning just don’t let anyone go into the woods. Laura notices Ellen is missing and some kdis say she went into the woods with a boy named Stevie. So, Laurie goes to look for her. Laura hears footsteps and animal grunts. Then she sees a flash of red. Then the sound of velcro and bone’s breaking. When she looks she finds a deer with its head thrown off. The insides ripped out and devoured. Then she sees her dad running toward her covered in blood.
He says he heard her screaming and came running. He says a branch must have ripped into his chest. When they get back Ellen says she was looking for them. She and Stevie were in the garage. The party breaks up early. Ellen says Joe showed up. Laura goes back to Dr. Carpenter and she finally confesses that she and her dad were working on some geneic research but her dad started to go to far. He became obsessed and she fet like he was being cruel to the animals. They were trying to create virus-fighting genes. He promised her he’d stop but then she found some of her notes were missing so she asked him to leave. Laura runs out of the animal hospital.
Later that night she hears a howl and sneaks out. She finds the trailer and opens it. She sees the creature and can’t tell what it is. It has a pig's face but has human eyes and human arms and legs. It’s half pig half human. Two men step from out of the shadows. They realize she saw it and then go to grab her. laura sees the dead deer and decides to hide inside its skin. Laura hears the men talking to her dad and he tells them to find her before she ruins everything. She runs into Joe and asks if he can help her to the animal shelter. Laura sees something green on Joe's head and thinking it’s a caterpillar snatches it off and then finds out it’s a wig and he’s bald. He confesses he’s the creature (the one the rest of the animals are acting weird because of). He apologizes and says sometimes he gets so hungry. Sometimes he just wants to be free ad he’s tired of being locked up. He then runs off.
In one of the rooms at the animal hospital, Laura finds more of the half pig half human creatures. One wraps its hands around Laura's throat. Then Dr. Carpenter arrives. Laura finds out the creatures are Dr. Carpenters and she gave her the shot so she could expertiment on her. She tries to run and bumps into Joe and finds out he’s in on it too. In fact, he’s Dr. Carpenter's son. They lock laura in a cage. The Doctor explains she’s been doing all these experiments trying to reverse what she did to her son. Laura’s dad didn’t approve but she couldn’t stop. She had to find out how many she’d kill before she found the cure. Joe pleads with his mom to stop (now having a change of mind). But she jabs a needle in her arm and throws the switch. Laura’s dad shows up just in time and a bat and mrs. Carpenter take an eletic charge Dad explains he’s been trying to cure the animals when back at home. He rips up the plane ticket and tells lura he doesn’t want her to go. Later that night a bat is at the window. It’s Dr. Carpenter’s face on the bat's body. Laura and Dr. Carpenter both scream.
My Thoughts Nothing *too* (too) twisty in this one if you think hard enough about it. It’s usually the opposite in books that point at someone being “the bad guy”. So you had to know that “Dad” was being called out a little *too* much. The same with Dr. Capenter who was *too* “good” or helpful. The surprisingly part was not that she was bad but it was that she turned her own son into one of these creatures. Joe was easy to call out when you looked at the signs were there/ Je was always in the woods. Always popping up. Led us to a shack filled with bones and heads. I wasn’t even surprised that in the end Dr. Carpenter became one of the creatures. I was just surprised the twist wasn’t that Laura didn’t or her dad wasn’t one.

So a few buddies of mine recommended this to me awhile back, and ever since I read this, I can’t seem to get it out of my mind. As far as the Nightmare Room series is concerned, this book is the best there is, best there was, and best there ever will be when it comes to a “retread book.” I say this because if you’ve read Stay Out Of The Basement, the second Goosebumps book ever made, you will notice that this book is effectively the same plot structure as the iconic Goosebumps story. Even in Goosebumps, books like I Am Your Evil Twin, Frankenstein’s Dog, and It’s Alive It’s Alive are among many retread’s of Stay Out Of The Basement. Now, why is this one my favorite? Well besides the other three being strong in their own ways, this book absolutely defied my expectations and checked off all of the boxes I could possibly want in a book. Since it’s been awhile, I’ll share what I remember of it. But it deserves a more detailed review from me.
Laura lives in a small woodland town somewhere out in the west coast. Her father spends a lot of time out in his workshop behind their house where he is so protective of his work that he forbids Laura ever going inside of it. Laura is into photography and wants to snap pictures of animals out in the woods one day, but stumbles on something she shouldn’t have seen…
Laura notices creatures that seem unnatural and doesn’t know what to the think. To make matters worse, these creatures are being stalked by two hunters with guns and bad attitudes. Yes, gun’s in a Middle Grade horror book. Laura doesn’t know who to turn to besides this boy she meets out in the woods. She may or may not have a crush on him and invite him to a party of hers. But something also feels off about the boy… where does he live? where does he go to school? why does she only see him in the woods?
Anyways, as Laura tries to confront her father about somethings she’s been going through, her father tells her it isn’t a good idea to go into the woods for a while, as it could be very dangerous. Laura knows something is wrong with her father ever since he quit his veterinarian practice with his estranged business partner. She manages to have a conversation with her and she tells Laura that her father was beginning to do unethical things onto animals before he left and that is why they had to part ways as business partners.
Mortified, Laura begins do distrust her father and thinks that these strange animals she found were of her father’s doing. A huge event happens with her in the woods I don’t want to spoil, but that event puts stipulations on her party being allowed at her house. Her father still reluctantly agrees to let the party happen, but when her friend from the woods doesn’t show up to meet her other friends, Laura goes into the woods to look for him. And she has another interaction with the hunters from before. Her father scolds her for going into the woods again and breaks up her party. And also tells her to stay away from his workshop.
Eventually, Laura hits her breaking point. She has to uncover the truth behind what has been going on, why her father has seemingly changed, what kind of creatures was she seeing, and why the hunters wanted those creatures. She uncovers a file after breaking into her fathers workshop that puts him in direct involvement, but with… a new layer to it. Laura has no one else to turn to so she looks for her friend in the woods, but has a scary encounter with the hunters involving a deer carcass… and her father may also be involved with them too. She eventually does find her friend, but something is… odd about them as well. Laura realizes that her father’s former colleague might have some answers so they head to the veterinary clinic her father once worked at to find help.
There, the story completely and utterly goes bananas, but in a good way. The triple twist reveal that happens (I won’t spoil) is so crazy because it recontextualizes multiple events that happened prior involving Laura’s dad, reveals the actual villain of the story, and the motives of the villain impact mostly every key character of the book. Let’s just say, the veterinary clinic holds the answers to everything that’s been going on… and I’ll leave it at that. The ending twist to everything sends off the story poetically.
Nothing I’ve read by Stine, maybe minus Werewolf Skin, captivated me more than this book. Laura is a fabulously written character, with vibrant personality that goes beyond just a hobby or interest, she has a distinct detailed monologue throughout, and believable emotions to what she’s experiencing with her father and other characters throughout. She goes through love, distrust, fear, anxiety, courageousness, curiosity, panic, and pretty much all emotions you can think of that can be experienced. I mean no real disrespect to Stay Out Of The Basement, but compared to this book, that book just seems so surface level with the emotions Margaret went through in there.
Besides that, the stories atmosphere was very rich, and felt different than your average Stine book because it took place mostly in the woods behind Laura’s house. And there’s something naturally unsettling about the unknowns of the wilderness, encountering things you don’t necessarily want to find. The plot was engaging, with some subplot objectives like Laura’s photography assignment and her party, but mostly center-fused around her relationship deteriorating with her work-obsessed father. The twists and turns throughout kept elevating the tension further and further. And there was a “who-dun-it” of who was behind all of these weird things: was it Laura’s father, was it the hunter’s, was it Laura’s father’s ex-partner, was it her friend she met in the woods? Also, what does all of these events entail for Laura?
The villain of the story may be all but the expected for this type of story. But let’s just say: altruistic motives, crazy science fiction, body horror, and psychological horror play a huge factor in this book. And I LOVE IT! I can see some maybe not being “all the way” with who the villain is, but it’s one reveal you can see was clearly planned out from the start by Stine and the things they do is thought provoking and terrifying.
I have to say when it comes to endings, this is one of my favorites of all time. Because it blends together a who-dun-it reveal, with expert finesse, together with a crazy over the top ending that’s simply… iconic. Similar to the SOTB type stories, there’s always recontextualization in the end involving the parent or guardian in question, and this is no different. One could argue that following the formula makes these end reveals somewhat “predictable,” but having that who-dun-it layer with a stronger main focus on once character(s) makes the redirect at the end effective.
To conclude, this story was a bonafide Masterpiece. I dare say that this story along with Werewolf Skin from Goosebumps, Killer Computer from Spinetinglers, Are You Terrified Yet? from Goosebumps: Series 2000, and The Haunted Mask from Goosebumps are the only books I’d give that distinction to. If you want a clever reimagining of Stay Out Of The Basement, or simply just want a riveting story, this is the book for you.
I think this is a rather interesting book. There were a lot of suspicions built around Laura's father due to the disturbing research he was working on and that he refused to let Laura into the secret. We were all fooled by the author to assume that it was Laura's father who's the culprit all along.
joe was an unexpected guest. The boy from the woods sounds equally suspicious, but he was always nice to Laura that nobody quite suspected anything. The men with rifles were misunderstood as we were made to think that they are either poachers or people who're ready to kill for anything. Basically all the adults in this book are potential suspects except for Dr. Carpenter. Who would have thought?
Of course, the suspension stopped midway as I managed to catch on. Dr. Carpenter wasn't as innocent as she painted herself to be. If you have read enough Stine's books you would have known that usually the most unexpected characters are the ones who are the true culprits.

Hmmmm... I'm not sure about the stars... 2.5 maybe, a mid range book. This time, we have a medical thriller plot. To sum up, Laura, the main character, discovered an ugly truth, and her trust towards her father shook up, and things got pretty dirty and messy. So, we see what happens during this course of events. Obviously, we have twists, but the ending was open like what happened, was she bitten, did they fight, or did the father come and help her and what about the boy, Jack?? I'm left behind with so many questions in my head and as always, it's not explained well like it was short-cut. The story was a bit slow-paced and how about dog, her girl friend, these two men? The dog had a horrific accident but then what happened later, like why didn't talk about it about its situation? Some elements of the books were introduced but then put aside which made the story a bit awkward and unsettled.
It all started with finding a finger in the woods. It wasn’t from a human. It was from some kind of animal. Everything was feeling weird to Laura—the woods, the animals, and even her own father. What was her father working on in the shed? What was he hiding? Something incredibly scary was in those woods. Something was attacking and eating the animals. I hated that Laura’s poor dog was attacked—his poor leg all chewed up. Oh, so sick!
This was horror and mystery all rolled into one. It’s a pretty terrifying ordeal with all the animal experiments and the hunters in the woods. Hiding in the dead dear was SO GROSS! Of course, the author had to detail every, little thing about it. A story that could only be concocted by a dark mind. I wasn’t too sure about the ending as it conflicted with what I read in the beginning.
This is truly the most disturbing book out of the serie despite it being a middle grade horror and I loved it. It has the mysterious and eerie vibe about it unlike the others from start to finish.
That one scene where she stepped inside a dead dear to hide was absolutely disgusting!!!!! This felt like a mix of resident evil with all the mutant animals and humans.

Hahaha--susah sih kalo udah terkenal bikin buku ngetwist, pasti ngarep twist yang 'You think you know the story----You know nothing!!'.
I feel for the mother and son. Nobody was trying to be bad even when they were, it's just that the main character keep getting in everyone's business, even if she didn't want to. If she would of listen to her Dad, would the ending come out the same?
