Strange Encounters: UFO's, Aliens, & Monsters Among Us

Rate this book
Like 15 "X-Files" rolled into one, Strange Encounters by ufologist and journalist, Curt Sutherly, shares gripping stories that run the gamut from monster sightings to UFO cover-ups.

Strange Encounters confronts the unknown head-on, probing some of the inexplicable mysteries that will intrigue you, haunt you, and even frighten you. The remarkable yet true events documented here indicate a striking pattern of strange occurrences you will not be able to dismiss―or forget.

·Why do probes to Mars vanish? Is there some "great galactic ghoul" that devours them?
·Before the Russian "Fobos 2" probe stopped functioning, it showed a massive system for heat generation, an invisible object which cast a shadow, and an object in space that cannot be identified. What is the meaning of all these discoveries?
·What is the truth about the MJ-12 documents that purportedly reveal that the government knows much more about UFO's than it admits?
·What is the nature of the "phantom panther" that is seen all over the U.S. East Coast?
·What happened to the "mothman," a strange, human-sized creature with bat-like wings that terrorized West Virginia?
·What are the secrets of the Abominable Snowman?
·What is the truth about the Bermuda Triangle?
·What are the real beginnings of the UFO controversy?

Strange Encounters is one of the most exciting books covering important events from the world of the strange and paranormal over the past 50 years. Rather than tell you what to believe, it gives you information from all sides of each strange event and lets you decide for yourself. Strange Encounters is a book you must have.

Pretty light and pulpy, with an ad for the magazine stuck right in the middle. You can tell that Sutherly really cares about the material, and that makes it a fun read, even if the composition and organization is a bit lackluster. Great book to shove in your back pocket.

Despite the lurid cover, this is a fairly intelligent collection of essays on various Fortean subjects. The author is moderately skeptical, but leans to the Vallee/Keel school of thinking on most of these matters. My only real criticisms are that some of the pieces are very slight, almost toss-offs, and there really is no organizing principle behind the book––subject matter appears randomly chosen, and Sutherly is not articulating a perspective on the paranormal with any thoroughness. But he isn't doctrinaire or blatantly pseudo-scientific, and I'd welcome further, more ambitious, books by him.

I've had this book on my shelves for a long time. I think I've read it before but it didn't make much of an impression on me. This is unusual because normally I like Fate publications.

I found the endnotes the most fascinating. Those little bits of addendum were some of the most interesting parts of the stories.

I doubt I'll keep this book. It just isn't quite worth the shelf space.

An interesting read, the author manages to be startlingly objective in his
recounting of famous incidents, without being ambiguous about his own beliefs.
