Beloved for both her complex mysteries and her fascinating main character, African-American female cop Marti MacAlister, Eleanor Taylor Bland is "one of today's most talented mystery writers" ( Booklist) . Now Marti is newly married, juggling domestic bliss and a blended family, when an arsonist/bomber shatters the peace of their sleepy Chicago suburb. Suddenly Marti and her partner Matthew "Vik" Jessenovik are working overtime to investigate a series of crimes that appear victimless--until a woman's charred body is discovered in the smoking ruins of a vacant house. There's no time to lose as they race to find a sociopath who has them in his sights--as he graduates from backlot blazes to wholesale homicide, in search of the ultimate thrill....
Eleanor Taylor Bland was an African American writer of crime fiction. She was the creator of Lincoln Prairie, Illinois (based on Waukegan, Illinois) police detective Marti McAllister.
I initially didn’t like knowing more than the detectives about the bad guy, but I ended up liking the tension it provided. And the comic character Geoffrey was a relief from all the terrifying happenings. The bad guy was really creepy!
Got this book in a free library, it is not the type of book I'd usually read. It was somewhat difficult to follow, some cut off paragraphs/pages, story line as mediocre without much context.
Marti and her partner, Vic, hunt down a murderer of Vic’s HS classmate, and a bomber and arsonist. Story is told from different characters pov, but moves smoothly.
